John Gibbons: Artist & Sculptor
John Gibbons, artist and sculptor, talks about his life and work at The Custom House Studios, The Quay, Westport after the opening of an exhibition of some of his work as part of the 2014 Westport Arts Festival.
John Gibbons was born in Ireland in 1949. He studied at Limerick School of Art and Design, 1969–70, Crawford Municipal School of Art, Cork, 1970–72 and at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, London, 1972–76.
Gibbons’s early work was made partly as a reaction against conceptual art, where the ideas or concepts held supremacy over the object. Gibbons’s work has always been concerned with physicality, with an emphasis on materials and construction. Gibbons’s works have been made from scrap steel, bronze, and virgin stainless steel sheets and bars. In the late seventies, Gibbons made some small–scale pieces in lead, which, because of its malleability, required a different approach; these sculptures were compacted or folded in different ways. Deeply textural, his works are often designed to be sited in unusual environments; in this way, Gibbons has become a master of juxtaposition. Following his formal education, Gibbons became a regular visitor to the United States and Canada where he was visiting artist at Sculpture Space, Utica, NY, 1980; Triangle Arts Trust, Pine Plains, 1982; Clayworks Studio Workshop, NYC, and Syracuse University, 1983; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, 1984; Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada, 1985 and Art Triangle Barcelona, 1987.
In 2003, Gibbons was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of British Sculptors. Gibbons’s sculpture is in major public collections in America, Canada and Europe. In 2010, he held solo exhibitions in both Ireland and London and in 2011 exhibited ‘John Gibbons: Sculpture & Drawing’ at Royal British Society of Sculptors, London.
