ABOUT VEDANTA
Vedanta is one of the world’s most ancient religious philosophies and one of its broadest. Based on the Vedas, the sacred scriptures of India, Vedanta affirms the oneness of existence, the divinity of the soul, and the harmony of religions.
ABOUT VEDANTA NY

It was a historic event, for the seed of the world-wide Ramakrishna Movement was sown here in New York over a century ago. STORYLINE:
Patients and carers at the Hillcrest HIV Trust in Durban marked World AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) Day on Thursday with a memorial service for patients and friends who have died of AIDS-related illnesses at the hospice.
South Africa, a nation of about 50 (m) million, has an estimated 5.7 (m) million people infected with HIV, more than any other country. Expanding treatment is a financial and social challenge.
I think we are making progress, slowly, in our country, but it's thanks to a civil society. We fight hard for what we've got around HIV AIDS and ARVs (Anti Retro-Virals - HIV drugs), Mary-Anne Carpenter, head nurse at the Hillcrest AIDS Trust said.
Globally record 1.4 million people started life-saving treatment in 2010 - more than any year before - and at least 420,000 children were receiving the antiretroviral therapy at the end of 2010, a 50 per cent increase since 2008.
The latest estimates from UNAIDS show that 34 million people were living with HIV at the end of 2010 and nearly 30 (m) million have died from AIDS-related causes over the past 30 years.
Meanwhile in South Korea a large tree made of 733 red ribbons and a wall of condoms to mark the day was placed at a plaza in Seoul.
Officials from South Korean health ministry, Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Korea Federation for HIV/AIDS Prevention and the public gathered to send messages of support to AIDS patients.
A wall made of red condoms creating the word AIDS stood right next to the red ribbon attached three metres high tree, as activists tore off condoms to indicate the role they play in preventing the spread of the virus.
Now AlDS is a controllable disease. It is treatable, not an untreatable one. It can be fully prevented if (people) have the correct perception of AIDS, Kim Min-ki, chairman of the Korea Federation for HIV/AIDS Prevention said against the backdrop of condoms.
In June a United Nations summit in New York adopted ambitious new targets to defeat AIDS.

PRINCE HARRY TESTED FOR HIV LIVE ON FACEBOOK
Footage of Britain's Prince Harry being tested for HIV has been broadcast live on the royal family's Facebook page, in a bid to encourage members of the public to have the test.
With HIV rates in the U.K. continuing to rise, the 31-year-old royal decided to be tested publicly to help tackle the stigma surrounding the disease.
The Prince had the simple finger prick procedure at London's Burrell Street Sexual Health Centre on Thursday (14 JUNE 2016), and tested negative.
Harry has made highlighting the issue of HIV/AIDS a major element of his public work. Next week he will speak at the World AIDS conference in Durban, South Africa.

Discreet, all-in-one HIV test to be made available in South Africa
More than forty million people suffer from HIV/Aids and, according to the World Health Organisation, most of them are here.
Sub Saharan Africa bears the greatest burden, around seventy per cent of the disease worldwide.
Here in South Africa the greatest urgency has been for the development of a fast, accurate and inexpensive diagnostic device.
Early assessment and treatment can have a big impact on the HIV treatment and prevention programs.
South Africa has two million people on anti retroviral treatment.
The problem until now has been a simple test which is sensitive enough to be absolutely accurate.
Atomo Diagnostics, the company which developed this particular device, says trials show it is completely reliable.
It's quick and easy to use and according to the company it's simplicity means there's less scope for making mistakes.
CEO John Kelly says: Clinically the test performs very well. We've had an independent South African lab verify sensitivity at 100%. So in the lab it performs very well. We are here with FPD doing our in field study showing our usability and the accuracy of the blood delivered can improve rapid test results by getting rid of potential false negatives from not delivering sufficient blood to the test.
The first trials were held here in Pretoria.
People like Siva Chinsamy have come to mobile clinics like this one after hearing about the test.
He says: It makes me feel more comfortable testing with the Atomo because I have been informed that it is 100% accurate and that gives me peace of mind.
Flora Thobela was diagnosed with HIV in 1992.
That was before the anti retrovirals (ARVs), so widely used now became available and it was a time when there was little faith in testing because the kits were so unreliable.
Thobela was among patients on the first ARV treatment trial at the Desmond Tutu HIV foundation.
She says: In the past years people were said to be HIV positive and they are not because of the false tests (results). So I think with something that can be that accurate, then yes it will be easier to get accurate results, rather than the person leaves thinking that they have HIV when they are not. I think that will be great actually. Getting results in a short period of time. It is accurate results that will work wonderfully.
The device is also being welcomed by health workers who find it easier to use according to Kelly.
He says: The response of the actual users of the test has been fantastic. I mean they are challenged each day to do these tests accurately. Using the manual pipettes is very difficult so our device takes that risk away of them doing incorrectly. So I think they are very pleased that this device addresses their needs. The response, the support has been very encouraging.
The device will be available to buy in a few months time.
