TAIWAN'S MOST-TERRIFYING DAY HIKE - ZHUILU OLD TRAIL - TAROKO GORGE - (台灣最可怕的步道)(有中文字幕)
Taroko Gorge in Taiwan is famous for its stunning scenery. But did you know you can also hike there? One of the trails - the Zhuilu Old Trail (錐麓古道) - is probably one of the scariest walks you could ever do. Join Richard and hiking buddy Hugo as they scale the heights and overcome their fears to complete one of Taiwan’s most hair-raising and spectacular day hikes.

The Trail
The trail involves a 3.1km (~2 miles) return trek to the Cliff Outpost. The first 2.5km is pretty much all uphill as you gain around 600m in altitude, passing what remains of the old Badagang Police Station to reach the cliff section. From here the 1m-wide path slopes gently and is not difficult, although you must pay careful attention. People have died on this trail due to their own negligence. It can anywhere between 3-5 hours depending on your pace/fitness.
Booking the Trail
Reserving a place is pretty straightforward, although it is understandably popular. You can book your spot on the trail up to 30 days in advance on the Taiwan National Park Permit website (English). The number of places is limited to 96 on weekdays and 156 on holidays/weekends. Weekends fill up rapidly so you need to plan ahead and book as soon as they become available on the site to avoid disappointment.
On the day of the hike you need to be at the trailhead between 7am and 10am. Arrive late and you may not be admitted. The trailhead is located at the entrance to Swallow Grotto (燕子口) and parking is available around 500m away (again arriving earlier is better.)
Travel Logistics
Swallow Grotto is around a 30-minute car or taxi ride from Hualien City, or around 15 minutes from the town of Xincheng - the nearest station to Taroko.
To get there on the bus, take Hualien Bus 1133 or 1133A (bound for Tianxiang), the 1126 to Luoshao, or the 1141 (Lishan).
From Xincheng or Xincheng train station (Taroko National Park Headquarters station) take Taroko Bus 302.
Drones
You need a permit to fly a drone in Taroko Gorge, but the permit process is quite straightforward. You can download the form and regulations from the National Park website (

花蓮馬太鞍休閒農場 (MaTaiAn Wetland Ecological Park), Hualian, Taiwan, 6/5/2013
The Mataian Wetland Ecological Park Area (花蓮馬太鞍休閒農場) is located at the foot of Masi Mountain in Hualien County's Guangfu Township. The springs of this natural wetland flow unceasingly. It covers a surface area of 12 hectares. The clear, shallow Fudeng River originates from Masi Mountain, where the spring waters converge from under the ground. This river zigzags from south to north through the Mataian Wetland Ecological Park, nourishing the lush life of this area. Changes in the river's water speed and depth have resulted in a greatly varied natural environment. Consequently, the Mataian Wetland Ecological Park can boast of almost 100 kinds of water plants. The variety of birds, frogs, insects and water animals is also astounding. In any of the field drainage ditches of the Mataian Wetland Ecological Park, the remains of fish, shrimps, shellfish, and spiral shells can be found. There is exuberant life everywhere.

Three Soldiers Dead after Tank Falls into River in Taiwan
Three soldiers died and another one was in a critical condition after an armored vehicle fell down a bridge into a river after a firing drill on Tuesday in southern Taiwan's Pingtung County, China.
The CM11 armored vehicle which was carrying five soldiers was returning to its camp after a firing drill when it fell off the bridge and plunged into the Wangsha River, upside down with only the tracks above the water.
The driver managed to escape and the other four were trapped inside as the doors were blocked, according to a military officer.
Huang Chung-shih, commander of the 564 brigade of the eighth Taiwan army group to which the vehicle belongs, said at a press conference held Tuesday afternoon that the left track of the vehicle got stuck on the bridge and therefore the vehicle lost its balance and fell off the bridge.
The vehicle fell to the site with the gun turret at the bottom and the driver's hatch door and the loader's hatch door were at the bottom and couldn't be opened. And it was raining today, and so it was hard (for the trapped soldiers) to escape, said Huang.
The four trapped soldiers were later found without vital signs and sent to a hospital. Three died and the fourth one was revived after emergency treatment.
The families of two of the dead soldiers went to the Kaohsiung Municipal Funeral Parlor on Wednesday. The autopsy result is yet to be released to identify the cause of the soldiers' deaths. More on:

Greater Taipei All Pass Ticket launches, offering one month’s transport forNT$1280
Commuters across the capital today welcomed the launch of the 30-day Greater Taipei all-inclusive bus and metro pass. The All Pass Ticket costs NT$1280 and can be loaded onto Easycards. Tens of thousands have joined the monthly rider program already. This lady has gone to a metro service counter to buy a Greater Taipei All Pass Ticket. For her, it will mean big savings. The All Pass Ticket system launched today. After applying to join, members simply scan their cards as normal, on buses and in the Taipei Metro, to activate 30 days of free rides. It even includes up to 30 minutes’ free use of a Youbike. As many as 120,000 people applied for the pass before it was even launched this morning. But many people are making very fine calculations before shelling out for the pass. It may be all-inclusive, but that doesn’t mean it will save you money if you’re not spending that much in the first place. Commuters who take long metro rides daily will get the most benefit from the pass, as will those who regularly take long bus journeys across different districts of Greater Taipei. The twin city governments hope their transit scheme will make life in and around the capital easier for everyone; it remains to be seen whether it’s a hit with residents.

Train Accident: Man sent flying by oncoming train as he attempted to illegally cross tracks
Last week in Hualien, along the eastern coast of Taiwan, a man was struck and killed while crossing the train tracks.
It was approximately 8pm, when Mr. Wen apparently attempted to drive across the tracks on his motorcycle.
A passenger train, carrying 300 people, struck him and sent him and his bike flying through the air to land 20 meters away.
The conductor of the train said that since it was dark, he did not see Mr. Wen until it was too late to react.
None of the passengers were injured and police said Mr. Wen most likely died from the initial impact with the train.
The authorities also state that drivers should heed warning lights and blasts from the train’s horn. Drivers should not risk crossing train tracks when warning lights are on, especially at night.

Taiwan train derails, killing 18
????☠️ Taiwan train derails, killing 18 and injuring 160
Sun Oct 21 2018
???? TAIPEI, Taiwan — Eighteen people were killed and at least 160 others injured on Sunday when one of Taiwan’s newer, faster trains derailed on a curve along a popular weekend route, officials said.
????The Puyuma express train was carrying more than 366 passengers from a suburb of Taipei toward Taitung, a city on Taiwan’s southeast coast, when it went off the tracks at 4:50 p.m., the Taiwan central government said in a statement.
????The National Fire Agency cited the Cabinet spokesman’s office as saying 18 people were killed and 160 injured.
????Some passengers were crushed to death, Ministry of National Defense spokesman Chen Chung-chi said. “Their train car turned over. They were crushed, so they died right away,” Chen said.
????Soldiers have been removing bodies to identify them, he added, but nightfall was complicating rescue work.
????Most of the deaths were in the first car, which flipped over, a government spokesman said.
????It was unclear how many people may still be trapped in the train, said the spokesman, who spoke on customary condition of anonymity. Some 120 soldiers joined firefighters in their rescue work.

Forty Four South Village ( 四四南村 – Si Nan Cun )
Forty Four South Village (四四南村) was initially the first Military Community Village built by Taiwan Government in 1984. But now, most of them has been demolished. The remains are preserved and converted into a garden. Over here, you will be able to see how the building was built in the past and understood the culture during the 1990s. There are also few cafes arounds for you to enjoy your coffee and take photo of Taipei 101. Many people come to the village to take photos of Taipei 101 also.
Two weeks left in signature drive to compete in Tokyo Olympics as Taiwan
The countdown is on for Taiwan''s campaign to participate under its own name in the Tokyo Olympics. By August 29, campaign organizers will need to submit 280,000 valid signatures to election authorities to satisfy the requirements for holding a referendum. Only two weeks remain before the deadline. But activists say they''re feeling optimistic.Taiwan''s name rectification campaign is collecting signatures to hit the second-stage threshold of the referendum process. At the Hsinchu train station, volunteers have been collecting signatures for three hours every night, adding at least 1,500 signatures each week.PetitionerUsing the name Taiwan lets us indicate that Taiwan is an independent country. Chinese Taipei lends itself to the impression that we are the same as China.PetitionerIf I were an athlete, I''d very much hope to be able to proudly proclaim that I''m from Taiwan, and to be able to bring my flag out to be honored. At the opening ceremony, I''d like to be able to see my national flag. I''d like to be able to sing my national anthem. So far, the Tokyo Olympics name rectification campaign has collected more than 200,000 signatures. That''s still a fair distance from the 280,000 signatures that must be submitted to election authorities before the issue can be placed on a ballot. The submission deadline is August 29, leaving two weeks left to gather enough signatures. But activists are optimistic, pointing to the enthusiastic response in Hsinchu and in Taitung, where a pro-localization group has helped gather signatures.Winston YuEastern Taiwan Society PresidentWe''ve been determinedly hoping that the people of Taiwan will rise to the occasion. We want to be Taiwanese, who have a national team and exceptional athletes. Why shouldn''t we be able to compete under the name Taiwan? The Taiwanese people''s rights will have to be earned by us all.In the last mile, activists across Taiwan are pushing hard to get on the ballot, hoping to achieve a sea change in representation at the next Olympic games.

An estimated 1 million visitors will flood into nearby Taipei City Hall Square.Traffic promises to be much improved this year due to the addition of the MRT's new Xinyi Line. A train will arrive every 3.5 minutes on average. Additional runs will also take place on the Bannan Line, and the system will remain open all night long.Chuang Ming-tsungTRTC Vice PresidentWe can improve our overall transport capacity by an estimated 70 percent. CWB forecasts iciest cold front to hit this weekend, possibly bringing snow
Jade Mountain and Taipingshan awoke to a light dusting of snow this morning thanks to a strong cold front that passed through Taiwan last night. The Central Weather Bureau forecasts another to arrive tomorrow night followed by an even colder one, maybe even the coldest this season, set to hit this weekend. There may even be some snowfall at Yangmingshan, which stands only 1,000 meters above sea level.Excited tourists rushed up to the Taipingshan National Forest Recreation Area to get a glimpse of the light covering of snow brought in by the cold front that arrived last night.A second a cold front will arrive tomorrow evening, though another colder one, perhaps even the coldest one this winter, is forecast to arrive in Taiwan this weekend.Hsu Chung-yiCentral Weather BureauAt the weekend, temperatures in the center, north and northeastern regions will dip to around 8 degrees Celsius. Temperatures in the southern region, Hualien and Pingtung areas will drop to around 10 to 12 degrees. The cold, humid air may increase the chances of more snowfall. Hsu Chung-yiCentral Weather BureauIn the next seven days, mountainous areas that are 3,000 meters above sea level all have a chance of snowfall. When the weekend cold snap arrives, areas 2,000 meters above sea level may also see some snow. Even areas at only 1,000 meters above sea level in northern Taiwan, such as Datun Mountain and Qixing Mountain, may get a light dusting. The CWB forecasts that temperatures will remain low until next Tuesday, and cautions the public to take the proper precautions to keep warm.

Railways will improve Ziqiang service to ease Puyuma demand
Passengers unable to book a seat on the Puyuma express for the upcoming national day holiday are venting their anger online. While Taiwan Railways won’t meet full demand this holiday, in the future it plans to speed up other train services so travelers have better options to choose from. Online traffic was heavy Thursday morning as rail passengers sought to reserve Puyuma express train tickets between Taipei and Taitung for the Double Ten national day celebration. Many failed to get the tickets they desired.Liu Shuang-hoTaiwan Railways“As of Friday morning, about 415,000 orders were successfully placed. Most customers probably had their whole family attempt to book tickets,” says this railways official. Some who did not manage to get their hands on a ticket resorted to online complaining. The railways says that more than 230,000 users crowded onto its system when sales opened. In the first minute, nearly 90,000 tickets were sold. All available tickets were snatched up for peak travel times on the Puyuma express on Oct. 9th, 10th and 12th.Thus far, only about one-sixth of the people who booked a ticket have picked it up. Tickets that are not picked up within two days will go back on sale. Another strategy to ease demand will be to improve the railways’ Ziqiang service. Liu Shuang-hoTaiwan RailwaysOur goal is for future push-pull Ziqiang express trains to travel between Taipei and Taitung in 4.5 hours. Currently, it takes these trains about five hours and 40 minutes. An additional three trains heading both north and south will also be added during the holiday. Tickets will go on sale on Saturday at midnight.
Tropical Storm Bailu to unleash rains from Friday
Tropical Storm Bailu is still tracking northwest toward Taiwan. Local and international forecasts see the storm making a direct hit before cutting across Taiwan proper. The Central Weather Bureau says it could issue a sea warning as early as Friday morning, followed by a land warning in the latter half of the day. The worst effects will be felt Saturday, with torrential rains expected in eastern, central, and southern parts of the island.Early morning on Thursday, it was cloudy or sunny skies island-wide. But the fair weather won’t stick around. Tropical Storm Bailu is churning in, and a sea warning is expected as early as Friday morning.Chu Mei-linCentral Weather Bureau forecasterAs Bailu approaches, it will intensify slightly, but the strength is likely to remain at the scale of a tropical storm. With regard to a land warning for the storm, we’re not ruling that out. If there is one, it would be issued after 12 p.m. on Friday. At this time, meteorologists from the CWB, U.S. navy, South Korea, and Japan all see Taiwan in the path of a direct hit. The storm is most likely to make landfall at Hualien or Taitung. But the path could change based on the strength of a Pacific high-pressure zone. There’s a chance of the storm veering southward to glance the Hengchun Peninsula or transit the Bashi Channel.Chu Mei-linCentral Weather Bureau forecasterThe future path of the storm is still uncertain. Going by our current track forecast and the radius of probability circle, this storm will cover the whole of Taiwan and an area of the Bashi Channel. So generally speaking, on the two days of Saturday and Sunday, there will be significant rainfall in the east and south.Starting Friday, Bailu will bring intermittent showers to Eastern Taiwan. Rainfall is expected across Taiwan on Saturday, with torrential rains to strike the eastern, central, and southern parts of the island.
Typhoon Nepartak Continues To Create Havoc
In China, the remains of super typhoon Nepartak made landfall in Fujian province, bringing high winds and heavy rain, and forcing the relocation of hundreds of thousands of people on Saturday.
More than 420,000 people in four cities including the capital Fuzhou have been urgently relocated.
More than 300 high speed trains, almost 400 flights and nearly 5,000 buses have also been cancelled.
The storm hit land in Fujian province at 1.45 pm local time on Saturday, lashing Shishi city with winds of around 100 kilometres per hour.
Tropical storm risk had rated the typhoon as category 5, at the top of its scale, but it weakened after crossing Taiwan and hit Fujian province as a tropical storm.
Typhoons are common at this time of year in the South China Sea, picking up strength over warm waters and dissipating over land.
