Peak District Country Walk The Roaches and Lud's Church round
Our video is a guided circular walk in the Peak District, Staffordshire. Starting near Upper Hulme we walk up to the summit Hen Cloud then continue across the top of The Roaches to the Black Forest wood where we visit Lud’s church. We return through the wood to Roaches End and back to the car park via the minor road. This is a moderate walk on distinct gravel and stony paths/tracks with some steep inclines and declines.
Elevation: approx lowest point 307m (1008ft) approx highest point 501m (1,645ft) approx ascent 675m (2,216ft).
Approx 8.25 miles allow 3½ to 4½ hours using OS Explorer Map OL24, The Peak District, White Peak area. This walk is done in a figure of eight starting anti-clockwise and can be made into shorter walks. Hen Cloud and The Roaches to Roach End approx 5 miles allow 2½ to 3 hours. Hen Cloud, The Roaches and the short cut to Lud’s Church approx 7.5 miles allow 3 to 4 hours.
Start point: parking area at the side of the road just after passing Paddock Farm on the left.

The Peak District - Exploring the Roaches - Part One
As part of my exploration of the wonderful Peak District, Kevin Hall and Sue Blount have taken me to an area in Staffordshire called The Roaches.
The Roaches (from the French les roches - the rocks) is a prominent rocky ridge above Leek and Tittesworth Reservoir in the Peak District of England. The ridge with its rock formations rises steeply to 1,657 ft.
Along with Ramshaw Rocks and Hen Cloud they form a gritstone escarpment, which is popular with hikers, rock climbers and freerunners. It is often very busy especially at weekends.

Leek is a market town and civil parish in the county of Staffordshire, England, on the River Churnet. Leek is situated about 10 miles north east of Stoke-on-Trent. Leek is an ancient borough and was granted its royal charter in 1214. Leek is the administrative centre for the Staffordshire Moorlands District Council. King John granted Ranulph de Blondeville, 6th Earl of Chester, the right to hold a weekly Wednesday market and an annual seven-day fair in Leek in 1207.
Leek's coat of arms is made up of a Saltire Shield. On the top is the Stafford Knot, either side is the Leek Double Sunset and below a gold garb. The crest is a mural crown with three Mulberry leaves on a Mount of Heather on top of which a Moorcock is resting his claw on a small-weave Shuttle.
Most of the town is at or above 600 feet (180 m) and is surrounded by the higher countryside of the Staffordshire Moorlands which is situated on the southern uplands of the Pennines. Leek is built on the slope and crown of a hill which is situated just a few miles south of the Roaches; a gritstone escarpment which rises steeply to 1,657 feet (505 m). Leek is situated at the foot of the Peak District National Park and is therefore often referred to as the Gateway to the Peak District, although the town is more often referred to as the Queen of the Moorlands.
Leek offers some contemporary architecture, most notably the alterations and refurbishment to Trinity Church on Derby Street (2011) and new teaching building on Horton Street for Leek College (2013). Nearby Rudyard Lake is a popular tourist attraction and home to the Rudyard Lake Steam Railway, running along its eastern shores. Other nearby local attractions are the local football club Leek Town F.C., Alton Towers, the cultural and leisure facilities of the city of Stoke-on-Trent, and the Peak District National Park. The Churnet Valley Railway at Cheddleton also attracts several thousand passengers a year
Leek's Double Sunset on and around the summer solstice also attracts many tourists. Traditionally, the best location for seeing the double sunset was in the grounds of the parish church, but it is no longer visible from there. Currently, the best locations to witness the spectacle are from Lowe Hill, on the outskirts of the town, and from the private road to Pickwood Hall, off Milltown Way. The phenomenon and its possible observation points are described in detail in Jeff Kent's book, The Mysterious Double Sunset. In May of every year, Leek Arts Festival takes place, celebrating the cultural heritage of the town.
The town of Leek is served by First with a regular number 18 bus service (or 16 on an alternative route via Cellarhead). Leek was served by Leek railway station, which was opened by the North Staffordshire Railway on 13 July 1849 but was finally closed in 1965.

This week I headed out to meet my friend Andy for another very wet and wild wander in the glorious Peak District. We parked up at Gradbach and made our way up and over the moors to the southern slopes of Hen Cloud, from there we battled through the wind and the heavy rain towards the top of the Roaches. The next stop was the impressive Lud's Church before a short walk back to the car..... Then as is customary, coffee and cake but this time it was at Flash Bar Stores.

Our New Video Is Just Launched- The Roaches, A Dramatic Drop In The Peak District National Park
We are very proud to announce the launch of our latest new video. The Roaches are a cluster of dramatic grit stone rocks which stand proud against the Peak District skyline. Friend & foe to climbers, this outstanding landmark is a sight to behold.
It's sunrise in the Peak District National Park and the eerie soundtrack promises a video to make your hair stand on end. The majestic Roaches rise out of the mists and we see a walker's eye view from the top. The contorted stones are contrasted against the warmth of the sun, the heather a warm burnt amber amongst the bleak grey of the rock.
With water raging all around, the Roaches have a 360° view for miles around. We see the spectacular Three Shires Head in full glory, a bridge over a cascading waterfall - the point on Axe Edge Moor, where the three counties of Staffordshire, Derbyshire and Cheshire all meet.
It's a place where the grouse roam carefree, a wilderness of wonder. The weather can change in an instant, and in the video we see the lot. With mist rolling off the moors in one shot, transforming the Roaches into an eerie and scary place, the next shot sees another sunrise and all is tranquil again. The grit stone takes on a warm rosy glow and the Roaches are now approachable. They really are spectacular- a photographers delight.
And so with thanks, once again, to our intrepid filmmaker Terrybnd, we can all see the remote parts of the Peak District that we've never seen before.

Had an amazing time in Peak District, stunning scenery and unbelievably inspiring atmosphere.
The Roaches in Staffordshire is a Peak District gem; located above Leek and Tittesworth Reservoir, it’s loved by hikers and climbers alike. The impressively rugged and steep gritstone ridge is home to mythical mermaids and 15 metre natural gritstone clefts, so this is far more than your average countryside walk.
The Roaches is the 22nd-highest hill in the Peak District of England by absolute height (505 m).

26th May 2013 a walk around the Roaches,Staffs............very lucky with the weather for a sunny thirteen mile walk which is in a John Merrill book ..N wales can just about be see from the tops on a clear day!

I enjoy walking, I enjoy watching videos of people walking. Decided to get some camera equipment and make some of my own videos, so I can share my walks with like-minded people. After looking around on YouTube, I could not find many channels that focus on the Great British Countryside, So this is what I aim to focus on. Small towns, villages, Picturesque Landscapes, Rolling hills and mountains, along the coastline.
I also Plan to do some ASMR-ish style videos. Videos watching waves crash on a dark rainy day, watching clouds pass by on a windy day in the hills, watching the sunset on a far-off village, listening to a stream trickle through the woods, a waterfall up on a mountain. Taking in all the sounds. Great videos as you drift off to sleep.
