The Roots and Leaves March
English: (luxembourgish available below:)
Between 1845 and the First World War more than 70,000 Luxembourgers left their country to start a new life in the American Midwest. They mostly settled in the states of Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin. European political turmoil and a deep economic crisis caused by barren soil, joblessness, high birth rate and inheritance disputes, combined with the seductive promises made by immigration agencies and created an unprecedented exodus.
The 5th and 6th generation-descendants of these immigrants have not forgotten their country of origin. They formed an association for the purpose of rekindling family ties and cultural relations with Europe. Subsequently, the Luxembourg American Cultural Society and the Roots and Leaves Society in Luxemburg joined forces and, in 2010, they created a cultural center and a museum in the town of New Luxembourg, 6 miles north of Port Washington in the State of Wisconsin.
In the entrance hall of the museum visitors are welcomed by a tree bearing 150 leaves. The tree is made out of metal and its leaves bear the pictures of Luxembourgish immigrants. The roots represent the birth and development in Luxembourg and the leaves the new growth overseas. Music emanates from the crown of this majestic tree. It evokes the song of birds and spreads throughout the museum.
Daniel Heuschen, director of the Music Association in Echternach, succeeded in composing a harmonious blend of Luxembourgish and American melodies. His musical presentation begins with Give me a kiss to take on my journey by Luxembourgish poet and musician Dicks (1823 - 1891) and continues with the song On a small hill in Arlon. The first immigrants were Luxembourgers born in Arlon who became Belgian citizens in 1839. A large number of them immigrated to the United States. The musical presentation continues with a very successful creation by Daniel. It evokes the immigrants' arrival in New York; their curiosity, the initial hesitancy but above all their amazement upon discovering the world metropolis. This sentiment is conveyed by the musical exuberance of John Phillipe Sousa (1854 - 1932). In conclusion, The Saints Rock'n Roll by Bill Haley (1925 - 1981) manages to beautifully immerse us in the 20th century. The descendants of those Luxembourgish immigrants have since acquired American citizenship.

Iwwer 70.000 Lëtzebuerger hunn hirt Land zwëscht 1845 an dem éischte Weltkrich verlooss, fir en neit Liewen am amerikanische Midwest unzefänken. D'Rees gong absëns an d'Staaten: Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin. Politesch an economesch Krisen, Chômage, kanner-
reich Familien, Gestreits beim Deelen awer och lackeleg Verspriechen vun den Auswanderongsagenturen hunn zou engem eenzegen Exodus gefouert.
Hir Nokommen -- haut an der 5. a 6. Generatioun -- hunn d'Heemecht net vergiess an hunn sech a Veräiner zesummefonnt fir Stambeem, awer och fir kulturell Relatiounen opliewen ze loossen. So hunn d'„Luxembourg American Cultural Society dohannen an d'Roots and Leaves Society bei eis sech zesummegedoen, fir am Joer 2010, e Kulturzentrum an e Musée zou New Luxembourg anzeweien. Déi nei Siedlong läit 6 Mailen nördlich vu Port Washington, am Staat Wisconsin.
E stoole Baam, mat 150 Blieder, op deenen d'Biller vun Auswanderer ze gesi sin, empfänkt d'Visiteuren am Viirraum vum Musée.
Joerhonnert mam Bill Haley (1925-1981) séngem „The Saints Rock'n Roll dokumentéiert. Déi fréier Awanderer mat Wuerzelen am Ländchen sin iwwerdeems Bierger vum groussen Amerika gin.

Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) Overview
A Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) is where applicants for military service go to complete the enlistment process. There are 65 MEPS in the United States and Puerto Rico. Applicants who must travel a distance will receive free lodging at a nearby hotel. Meals and transportation are also provided at no cost.
Nicknamed Freedom's Front Door, MEPS are staffed with military and civilian professionals who carefully screen each applicant to ensure he or she meets the physical, academic and moral standards set by each Service. To do so, each applicant goes through the following steps:
- Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) testing
- Career Counseling
- Physical Exam
- Background Screening
- Oath of Enlistment
Following the Oath, an applicant is now a full member of the U.S. Military. At this point, he or she may ship directly to Basic Training for his or her branch, or enroll in the Delayed Entry (or Enlistment) Program (DEP) and undergo training at a future time. It can be a long day, and a lot happens quickly, but applicants are briefed at every step by MEPS staff, and there is always help available should questions arise.

ABOUT THIS FEED:
Ashland, VA, in Central Virginia, is located on the CSX RF&P Subdivision, the former Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac Railroad, and is about 15 miles north of Richmond. The town gets over 20 Amtrak passenger trains and 20-25+ CSX freight trains daily. It’s a designated quiet zone, but the crew can use the horns at their discretion. The maximum speed for trains passing through the town's center is 35 miles per hour (MPH).
There are 3 cameras available. The default camera is an Axis 360 located on top of the Visitor’s Center (train station), and 2 static cameras facing North and South on the other side of the intersection. Desktop users can use the suitcase icon at the bottom of the video to toggle between cams. For other devices, you can access the static cams with the links above.
See Tiny Tim’s Trains and Toys Store on the south cam? It's awesome, and worth a visit. Tell Suzanne and crew we said hello!
There is no ATCS layout (and no server coverage) available for the RF&P Sub, as it does not use radio code line (RCL) for switch-and-signal control (RCL is essential for ATCS availability).
There is a radio feed available, listening to the CSX RF&P Sub (BD dispatcher) and Richmond Terminal (FB dispatcher) channels, as well as the Buckingham Branch Railroad's (BBRR) Piedmont Sub channel (which crosses the RF&P Sub at a diamond in Doswell, to the north of Ashland):
A second radio feed providing the Richmond Terminal channel, as well as those for both the North End and Bellwood Subs, can be found here (select the Richmond Area Stream):
When’s the next train? Yeah, we get this a lot. You can figure out the next Amtrak passenger train with this handy link:
There’s no schedule for freight trains, but some of our more knowledgeable members will provide real-time information when it’s available. Please refrain from asking.

2019 World Food Prize
Iowa Public Television will provide live coverage of The World Food Prize Laureate Award Ceremony at the Iowa Capitol on Thursday, October 17 at 7 p.m. The ceremony will be broadcast on statewide Iowa Public Television and will be livestreaming at Iptv.org and on YouTube. The broadcast will repeat Sunday, October 20 at 1 p.m.
The 2019 prize will be awarded to Simon N. Groot of the Netherlands for his transformative role in empowering millions of smallholder farmers to earn greater incomes through enhanced vegetable production, benefitting hundreds of millions of consumers with greater access to nutritious vegetables for healthy diets. As founder and leader of East-West Seed, his initiative over the past four decades has developed a dynamic, smallholder-centric tropical vegetable seed industry, starting in Southeast Asia and spreading through Asia, Africa and Latin America.
“Like Dr. Norman Borlaug before him, Simon N. Groot has dedicated his life to improving the livelihoods of millions around the world,” said Ambassador Kenneth M. Quinn. “As the use of his seeds spread throughout the Philippines and to Thailand, Indonesia and across Southeast Asia, farmers’ daily lives were uplifted and consumers benefited from greater access to nutritious vegetables. Mr. Groot, in effect, developed a stunningly impactful global network of seed producers who are transforming the lives of 20 million farmers in over 60 countries every year.”
The World Food Prize was founded by Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and Iowan Norman Borlaug. After winning the Nobel Prize in 1970 for his achievements in agricultural research, Borlaug envisioned a separate international award to recognize those who have made significant contributions to advancements in the quality, quantity and availability of food in the world.
Programming support for the 2019 World Food Prize is provided by the W.T. and Edna M. Dahl Trust.
