RUSSIA: MOSCOW: FATHER FROST
Natural Sound
Children in the West may have seen Santa Claus come and gone already this year, but youngsters in Russia had to wait until Sunday to get their presents - delivered by Santa's distant relative, Father Frost.
Father Frost left his home in the town of Velikiy Ustyug and drove the 200 kilometres (124 miles) south to Moscow in a vintage car.
Hundreds of children lined the streets of the capital as the procession carrying Father Frost drove through the city's streets, with his grand daughter, the beautiful Snow Princess, at his side.
Most children in the world wait for Santa Claus to bring them gifts at Christmas time.
In Russia, it is Santa's close relative, Father Frost, who hands out the goodies.
He rode through Moscow's streets on Sunday, bringing festive cheer to hundreds of young children.
Father Frost's costume bears a strong family resemblance to Santa's.
But there are a lot of differences.
While Santa lives in Lapland and delivers Christmas presents with the help of his reindeer friends, his Russian cousin lives in the town of Velikiy Ustyug, a snowy north of Moscow.
His favourite means of transport is his vintage car, preferably with the beautiful Snow Princess in the passenger seat, who some say is his grand daughter.
Father Frost took part in a special show for children in the centre of Moscow on Sunday, hosted by the city's mayor, Yuri Luzhkov.
And there were many side-shows in the streets near the main stage.
Whilst some prefer to stay inside during the Russian winter, one Moscow street artist likes the temperature to stay below zero.
Passers-by were delighted by his giant sculptures - all made out of ice.
And centre stage once again was a frozen statue of Father Frost.
The traditional Russian Orthodox Christmas is not until January 7, but every year, more and more people celebrate the Western version of the festival.

RUSSIA: MOSCOW: GRANDFATHER FROST CELEBRATIONS
English/Nat
Braving a spell of cold, snowy weather, thousands of Muscovites assembled at a square near the City Hall to celebrate the official arrival of a local hero - Grandfather Frost.
Grandfather Frost or Ded Moroz as he's known in Russia, is the Eastern cousin of Santa Claus and exercises a similar attraction to young and old alike.
When not in the Russian capital, Grandfather Frost spends his days at his official residence in the town of Veliky Ustyug, some 600 kilometres north of Moscow where he shares quarters with Snow Maiden or Sneguruchka who is understood to be his granddaughter.
He also commands an army of junior Frosts who all have power over snow and cold.
Unlike his old fashioned cousin, the Russian Ded Moroz prefers domestically made cars to a sledge.
But he has something in common with Santa Claus - he likes to bring people gifts even though he prefers to deliver them on New Year's eve rather than Christmas.
It's easy to see why Grandfather Frost's approval ratings are second to none in Russia.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
The New Year is my holiday of choice - every time you expect a miracle to come, just as you did as a child. Like the new year would come and things will turn to better. That is why I got up early today and came here to see Grandfather Frost's arrival.
