Pedernales Cellars -- Stonewall, Texas
Just off of U.S. Hwy 290 and past the LBJ Ranch is a distinctly Texas style family run vineyard and winery. Their 17 acre estate vineyard contains many of the hot varietals such as Tempranillo, Touriga, Mourvedre, and Genache. These grape varietals have done well in Texas's own unique and sometimes unpredictable climate. Since the days when they first o...pened with just a handful of wines, you can now find a wide selection of whites and reds available with Texas grown grapes in the bottles. The Vino Blanco and Grenache Rose are distinctly good as well as the Muscat Canelli. The Texas Family Reserve really stands out as their quality red and if you're lucky you may still find a few 2006 vintages around. After you've indulged in the Tempranillo and Merlot, save yourself for the Ruby Port. It packs a punch. Wow says it all! We hear that their geothermal cooled cellar is worth checking out, too. The views from the high perch of this winery likewise provide a breathtaking opportunity to relax, soak in the beautiful surrounding Texas hill country and beckon you to stay a while.

In this video we spend a couple of days at a Harvest Host location.
4E Winery in North Dakota, where we enjoyed some great wine and great host Greg and Lisa Cook. We even got to help with the wine making process.
Duchman Family Winery -- Driftwood, Texas
Founded in 2004, this Italian style winery in Texas is making good, affordable wines. Some Texas wine lovers will remember this place as Mandola Winery, which has since been sold. (Not to worry though, the Mandola's have a restaurant conveniently located next door.) One will first notice the vast vineyards that have been planted at the estate with a wide variety of grapes. The wine selection is well balanced between white and reds. The majority of the wines are crafted in a dry style, yet there are a few sweeter and dessert wines available in the mix. The Montepulciano should not be missed! An upscale restaurant on the premises has one of the more unique views of the vineyard and the Hill Country. When visiting, sit back under the oak trees at one of the picnic tables with your favorite bottle and enjoy this piece of Italy in Texas. Salute!

Andreucci Wines – Fredericksburg, Texas
Italy has come to Texas! And we’re talking about a very long established winery from Italy that has now set its sights on making a mark in the Texas Hill Country. If you’ve ever wondered what the bar is set to for fine Italian style wine, then this is it. Many frequent Hill Country wine travelers may have noticed construction of Andreucii Wines along HWY 290 for the last couple for years. That is a venture between Italian winemaker Flavio Andreucci and Bill Sutherland who both have a strong passion to bring fine Italian wine making styles to Texas. The Andreucci family have been well established at making wines and tending vineyards since the 1790s in the Tuscany region of Italy. Their vineyard foundations started in Montefollonico. The Andruecii goal of the vineyard along HWY 290 is to produce the same fine Tuscany style wines using classic Italian wine making techniques while using Texas grapes. A worthwhile effort, indeed! The Hill County vineyard has Sangiovese, Merlot, and Primitivo planted for that future endeavor. Until those fine wines come from that vineyard, you can enjoy some fantastic fine Italian wines at their tasting room in Fredericksburg. They have several wines available for tasting of which you get to choose five. The black label wines are the premium tasting, well worth the extra fee to sample. For the whites, we first tried the 2015 Donna Alma. This Pinot Grigio wine has distinctive citrus notes to this dry and smooth white. Next, was the 2014 Montepulciano. This deeply hued ruby red wine has some intense cherry aromas and strong to moderate tannins that linger on the palate. The Cabernet Black label is a bold Cab Franc with an excellent balance between acidity and tannins, making it one of the finer Cab Francs we’ve tasted. The 2014 Regale Black Label is a classic Super Tuscan blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet, and Merlot that has intense tobacco and smoke for those who find rich reds enticing. By far and away, the 2008 Brunello is worth your stop! Made from 100% Sangiovese, it harnesses rich plum flavors with long lasting tannins. There is something to be said for this 36-month aged sexy red. It sets the bar for a Sangiovese wine! To finish your tasting, try their Prosecco which is dry and delightful with lasting bubbles to cleans your palate. You can reminisce on this fantastic tasting experience as you rejoice that these folks plan to be around for many years, with an increased selection of both Italian and Texas made wines planned. Andreucci has really set the bar high for quality wine tasting in the Texas Hill Country. It’s a great place for you to relax and enjoy the rustic lounge area flanked with racks of lovely bottles of wine along the wall! Saluti!

SUMMARY
=======
Carignan (also known as Mazuelo, Bovale Grande, Cariñena, Carinyena, Samsó, Carignane, and Carignano) is a red grape variety of Spanish origin that is more commonly found in French wine but is widely planted throughout the western Mediterranean and around the globe. Along with Aramon, it was considered one of the main grapes responsible for France's wine lake and was a substantial producer in jug wine production in California's Central Valley but in recent years, it has been reborn as a flagship wine for many cellars in the south of France as well as Catalonia, Spain Ampelographers believe that the grape likely originated in Cariñena, Aragon and was later transplanted to Sardinia, elsewhere in Italy, France, Algeria, and much of the New World. The variety was historically a component of Rioja's red wine blend. From Spain, it gained prominence in Algeria and fed that country's export production to France. Upon Algeria's independence in 1962, the French supply of Carignan wine was cut off and growers in Southern France began to plant the vine for their own production. The grape's prominence in France hit a high point in 1988 when it accounted for 167,000 hectares (410,000 acres) and was France's most widely planted grape variety. That year, in a drive to increase the overall quality of European wine and to reduce the growing wine lake phenomenon, the European Union started an aggressive vine pull scheme where vineyard owners were offered cash subsidies in exchange for pulling up their vines. Out of all the French wine varieties, Carignan was the most widely affected dropping by 2000 to 95,700 ha (236,000 acres) and being surpassed by Merlot as the most widely planted grape.The popularity of Carignan was largely tied to its ability to produce very large yields in the range of 200 hl/ha (11 tons/acre). The vine does face significant viticultural hazards with significant sensitivity to several viticultural hazards including rot, powdery mildew, downy mildew, and grape worms. Carignan is a late budding and ripening grape which requires a warm climate in order to achieve full physiological ripeness. The vine also develops very thick stalk around the grape clusters which makes mechanical harvesting difficult. It has an upright growth habit and can be grown without a trellis.A white grape mutation known as Carignan blanc and a pink-berried Carignan gris also exists in Roussillon in small plantings of around 411 hectares (1,020 acres) and 1 hectare (2.5 acres), respectively, reported in 2008.

Walden Audiobook by Henry David Thoreau | Audiobooks Youtube Free | Part 2
Walden by Henry David Thoreau is one of the best-known non-fiction books written by an American. Published in 1854, it details Thoreau’s life for two years, two months, and two days around the shores of Walden Pond. Walden is neither a novel nor a true autobiography, but a social critique of the Western World, with each chapter heralding some aspect of humanity that needed to be either renounced or praised. Along with his critique of the civilized world, Thoreau examines other issues afflicting man in society, ranging from economy and reading to solitude and higher laws. He also takes time to talk about the experience at Walden Pond itself, commenting on the animals and the way people treated him for living there, using those experiences to bring out his philosophical positions. This extended commentary on nature has often been interpreted as a strong statement to the natural religion that transcendentalists like Thoreau and Emerson were preaching. SUMMARY
=======
American cuisine reflects the history of the United States, blending the culinary contributions of various groups of people from around the world, including indigenous American Indians, African Americans, Asians, Europeans, Pacific Islanders, and South Americans. Early Native Americans utilized a number of cooking methods in early American Cuisine that have been blended with early European cooking methods to form the basis of American cuisine. The European settlement of the Americas yielded the introduction of a number of various ingredients, spices, herbs, and cooking styles to the latter. The various styles continued expanding well into the 19th and 20th centuries, proportional to the influx of immigrants from many different nations; this influx nurtured a rich diversity in food preparation throughout the country.
When the colonists came to the colonies, they farmed animals for clothing and meat in a similar fashion to what they had done in Europe. They had cuisine similar to their previous British cuisine. The American colonial diet varied depending on the settled region in which someone lived. Commonly hunted game included deer, bear, buffalo, and wild turkey. A number of fats and oils made from animals served to cook much of the colonial foods. Prior to the Revolution, New Englanders consumed large quantities of rum and beer, as maritime trade provided them relatively easy access to the goods needed to produce these items: rum was the distilled spirit of choice, as the main ingredient, molasses, was readily available from trade with the West Indies. In comparison to the northern colonies, the southern colonies were quite diverse in their agricultural diet.
During the 18th and 19th centuries, Americans developed many new foods. During the Progressive Era of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, c. 1890s–1920s, food production and presentation became more industrialized. One characteristic of American cooking is the fusion of multiple ethnic or regional approaches into completely new cooking styles. A wave of celebrity chefs began with Julia Child and Graham Kerr in the 1970s, with many more following after the rise of cable channels, such as the Food Network and Cooking Channel, in the late 20th century.
