Did you know that Clinton, Iowa used to be a lumber capital of the world? That's right! From the 1850's to the late 1890's, over a billion board feet of logs floated down the river from Wisconsin and Minnesota into the mills of Clinton, Iowa. Out of Clinton came enough board feet to build tens of thousands of houses and businesses every year.

CLINTON: Curtis Mansion
CLINTON, IA - ( CBS2/FOX28 ) At one point in history there were more millionaires per capita living in Clinton than anywhere else in the country. They were part of a late 1800s boom town explosion in the lumber business that made Clinton the milling capital of the nation. One of those lumber barons was George Curtis who played a huge role in the area's social circle. The construction of his opulent mansion and the incredible parties held there when it was completed were the regular topic of articles in the society pages of Chicago newspapers. Fortunately for all of us, that history that so often disappears, is preserved as though frozen in time. The Curtis Mansion is open for tours, weddings and receptions and the city would love you to come and visit. Wayne Sutton not only works for STIHL, he's also the curator of a museum that houses one of the largest collections of STIHL chain saws and memorabilia. Wayne has collected chain saws since his college days and his museum contains some of the rarest saws, including the STIHL model BL chain saw which was built in 1950. Wayne offers private tours by appointment.

We flew back to the States through Seattle, stayed with some friends, and then drove back towards Montana. However, we decided to meet some friends in the coolest german town in washington state, driving from Seattle to Leavenworth, Washington. It’s a town that has decided to market itself with a bavarian theme. It’s very quaint with lots of welcoming friendly residents. There are several breweries and wonderful restaurants and hotels and lots of other Leavenworth activities. We had great weather and downtown accommodations that made everything walkable. Wikipedia
Leavenworth is a city in Chelan County, Washington, United States. It is part of the Wenatchee−East Wenatchee Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 1,965 at the 2010 census. The entire town center is modeled on a Bavarian village as part of a civic initiative that began in the 1960s. The area is a major tourist destination during the wintertime.
The railroad construction was completed during the winter of 1893. Lafayette Lamb arrived in 1903 from Clinton, Iowa to build the second largest sawmill in Washington state.
Leavenworth was officially incorporated on September 5, 1906. A small timber community, it became the headquarters of the Great Northern Railway in the early 1900s. The railroad relocated to Wenatchee in the 1920s, greatly affecting Leavenworth's economy.
In 1962, the Project LIFE (Leavenworth Improvement For Everyone) Committee was formed in partnership with the University of Washington to investigate strategies to revitalize the struggling logging town. The theme town idea was created by two Seattle businessmen, Ted Price and Bob Rodgers, who had bought a failing cafe on Highway 2 in 1960. Price was chair of the Project LIFE tourism subcommittee, and in 1965 the pair led a trip to a Danish-themed town, Solvang, California, to build support for the idea. The first building to be remodeled in the Bavarian style was the Chikamin Hotel, which owner Jamie Peterson renamed the Edelweiss after the state flower of Bavaria.
Leavenworth is home to the Leavenworth Nutcracker Museum, which opened in 1995 and contains more than 5,000 nutcrackers dating from prehistoric to modern. Leavenworth hosts an annual Oktoberfest celebration. Leavenworth's transformation into a theme town was inspired, and assisted, by Solvang, California. Later, the Washington town of Winthrop followed Leavenworth's example and adopted a Western town theme.
In November 2007, Good Morning America went to Leavenworth for Holiday Gifts for the Globe where GMA helped light up the town for the Christmas Holiday. Leavenworth was also named the Ultimate Holiday Town USA by A&E

Sandhills Antique Farm Show 2015
The Sandhills Antique Farm Equipment Club 2015 spring show was held at Sandhills Farm Park in Lillington, North Carolina on March 20 and 21st. Demonstrations of restored antique equipment included a thrashing machine, hay baler, silage cutter --blower, hammer mill, saw mill, a saw for cutting tobacco sticks, that were used to hang tobacco in the barn, and the sticks were given to visitors as walking sticks, a saw for cutting slabs of wood for use in the old fashion wood burning stoves, a history lesson/demonstration of how turpentine, pitch and tar was harvested from the long leaf pine tree in the 1700 -- 1800's; antique tractors, cars and trucks.

Six months later, it became one of the original 13 states that founded the United States of America, and in June 1788 it was the ninth state to ratify the Constitution, bringing that document into effect.
Historically, New Hampshire was a major center for textile manufacturing, shoemaking, and papermaking, with Amoskeag Manufacturing Company in Manchester once being the largest cotton textile plant in the world, and numerous mills located along the various rivers in the state, including the Merrimack and Connecticut Rivers. Many French Canadians migrated to New Hampshire to work the mills in the late 19th and early 20th century; New Hampshire still ranks second among states by percentage of people claiming French American ancestry, with 24.5% of the state. Manufacturing centers such as Manchester, Nashua, and Berlin were hit hard in the 1930s-1940s, as major manufacturing industries left New England and moved to the Southern United States or overseas, reflecting nationwide trends. In the 1950s and 1960s, defense contractors moved into many of the former mills, such as Sanders Associates in Nashua, and the population of Southern New Hampshire surged beginning in the 1980s as major highways connected the region to Greater Boston and established several bedroom communities in the state.
With some of the largest ski mountains on the East Coast, New Hampshire's major recreational attractions include skiing, snowmobiling, and other winter sports, hiking and mountaineering (Mount Monadnock in the state's southwestern corner is among the most climbed mountains in the U.S.), observing the fall foliage, summer cottages along many lakes and the seacoast, motor sports at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway, and Motorcycle Week, a popular motorcycle rally held in Weirs Beach near Laconia in June.
