In Denmark, 12% of the population is at risk of poverty with an 'at risk of poverty' income threshold of 1208 Euros per month. Yildirim, 22 years old, was involved in criminal activities in the past that resulted in a prison sentence. With the help of Café Exit, an organization that receives support from the European Union and which helps ex-inmates to get their life back on track by organising education, jobs and place to stay, Yildirim has started a new life. He will soon begin at cooking school.

Dansk Forsorgs Museum Svendborg

Government locks-out a half million Danish kids from school
Interviews in English. In this video, filmed and edited today, April 12, you will experience one of Denmark's largest worker-conflicts in history, now in progress. It is directly impacting over a half million children and their families in a country of just over 5 million. For the past year, the national government, under prime minister Helle Thorning Schmidt, has been attempting to reshape our public schools such that children become less exposed to free-thinking and more like robots for industry.
Within that agenda, corporate taxes have been slashed while workers, their taxes now increased, pay for that trickle down myth by having their contracted wages, health care, education and welfare severely cut back. Three weeks ago, just prior to the Easter vacation, contract negotiations between the government's adminstration of public schools, Kommunernes Landsforening (KL), and the teacher's union, Danmarks Lærerforening, broke down. The government wants the teachers to work more hours, use less time to prepare for classes and all for less wages. This goes against the common sense of what teaching is about, but the government's administrative agency shut down the schools in an effort to force its agenda forth.
Here, an English teacher from Copenhagen suburban grade school, Husum Skole, explains it, including how the poor and marginalized are getting poorer with ever fewer opportunities, while the wealthy few grow ever more rich and powerful in society. This tendency to empower the wealthy by disempowering over a century of hard-fought worker's rights and unions is also being experienced in the US and much of the modern world. But that it is occurring in Denmark, a supposed model for human welfare, is disturbing on many levels.
In solidarity with the teachers, the unions representing the Danish police, social workers, nurses and many other human welfare occupations are organizing support.

In Solidarity with the People of Rwanda UNESCO Chair Regional Forum I.mov
Regional International Leadership Training Program was held in Rwanda in January 1-10, 2010. Young leaders from all corners of the globe converged on Kigali for an experience they hope will one day change the world. The young participants have been chosen because they are active in, and committed to, human rights work in their respective homes. This annual International Forum, a gathering of sharp young minds from around the globe, has been held for the past 6 years in the United States on the pretty campus at the University of Connecticut in Storrs. However, in January, at the invitation of the Rwandan government, the program is stepping out of the United States into Africa to continue the inspiring and challenging global dialogue about human rights . The UNESCO Chair and Institute of Comparative Human Rights brought participants from past forums together again in Rwanda. The program included presentations on the Rwanda in the aftermath of the genocide, Human Rights, Reconciliation, Conflict Resolution, the rule of law, gender violence, the impact of violence on society, poverty and health. The participants also spent time traveling the country, learning about the lived realities of these topics.
