Johnson City ISD - LBJ High School
Completed: 2005
Capacity: 350 students (450 core)
Bldg Area: 79KSF
Cost: $102/SF
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Value
Though completed for a low cost per SF, this campus delivers high quality. Flexible spaces reduce square footage; for example the stage opens to both the gym and cafeteria providing the flexibility of hosting events for large scale or smaller intimate audiences. HVAC systems were designed to switch between these assembly areas based on the demands. Inexpensive yet complementary materials were used to reflect the hill country, while glass walls open the space.
Process of Planning
The planning process started with a committee of community members including teachers, students, and local community members where we gathered information about needs and expectations. Information was then filtered and consolidated through a core committee including the management and select administrators.
Design
The project was driven by several key factors. These included exterior features such as incorporating the beautiful hill country views, and the preservation of as many tress as possible. One of the key elements that drove the design was a new bell tower that houses a historic bell from the original Johnson City school. Interior spaces were designed to be as flexible as possible and provide multiple uses, while materials were chosen to reflect the local hill country but not blow the budget.
Educational Appropriateness
The flexibility and adjacency of key areas enhance the teacher's ability to promote interactive learning. Money was spent to provide top of the line equipment such as the science laboratory equipment, while durable, yet relatively inexpensive materials, such as split face masonry were used for the construction of the building.
Innovation
Technology is delivered by wired and wireless technology, with digital projection systems in each classroom. A new bell tower houses a historic piece of the school's history. Extensive storefront systems were incorporated to make spaces feel larger and provide natural lighting. Spaces were designed with flexibility in mind including HVAC units that could be redirected to different assembly areas based on demands. Rainwater is harvested for use in landscape irrigation.

Houston is the most populous city in Texas and the fourth-most populous city in the United States, located in Southeast Texas near the Gulf of Mexico, following New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago respectively. With a census-estimated 2014 population of 2.239 million within a land area of 599.6 square miles (1,553 km2), it also is the largest city in the Southern United States, as well as the seat of Harris County. It is the principal city of Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land, which is the fifth-most populated metropolitan area in the United States.
Houston was founded in 1836 near the banks of Buffalo Bayou (now known as Allen's Landing) and incorporated as a city on June 5, 1837. The city was named after former General Sam Houston, who was president of the Republic of Texas and had commanded and won at the Battle of San Jacinto 25 miles (40 km) east of where the city was established. The burgeoning port and railroad industry, combined with oil discovery in 1901, has induced continual surges in the city's population. In the mid-20th century, Houston became the home of the Texas Medical Center—the world's largest concentration of healthcare and research institutions—and NASA's Johnson Space Center, where the Mission Control Center is located.
Houston's economy has a broad industrial base in energy, manufacturing, aeronautics, and transportation. It is also leading in health care sectors and building oilfield equipment; only New York City is home to more Fortune 500 headquarters within its city limits. The Port of Houston ranks first in the United States in international waterborne tonnage handled and second in total cargo tonnage handled. Nicknamed the Space City, Houston is a global city, with strengths in business, international trade, entertainment, culture, media, fashion, science, sports, technology, education, medicine, and research. The city has a population from various ethnic and religious backgrounds and a large and growing international community. Houston is the most diverse city in Texas and has been described as the most diverse in the United States. It is home to many cultural institutions and exhibits, which attract more than 7 million visitors a year to the Museum District. Houston has an active visual and performing arts scene in the Theater District and offers year-round resident companies in all major performing arts.

Patsy Cline
Virginia Patterson Hensley (September 8, 1932 – March 5, 1963), known professionally as Patsy Cline, was an American country music singer. Part of the early 1960s Nashville sound, Cline successfully crossed over to pop music. She died in a multiple fatality crash of her private plane at the age of 30. She was one of the most influential, successful and acclaimed female vocalists of the 20th century.
Cline was best known for her rich tone, emotionally expressive and bold contralto voice and her role as a country music industry pioneer. Along with Kitty Wells, she helped pave the way for women as headline performers in the genre. Cline was cited as an inspiration by singers in several genres. Books, movies, documentaries, articles and stage plays document her life and career.

Inside the Krusty Krab restaurant now open for business in Palestine
Salta Burger is the world's first restaurant inspired by Krusty Krab, a burger joint featured in Nickelodeon's cartoon show Spongebob Squarepants. It opened its doors on July 24 in an unlikely place - the Palestinian city of Ramallah, in the West Bank.
It's beautiful, it's the first time there is something like this for Palestine, said Raghad Awad, 11.
Before it even saw its first patron, the restaurant was a hit on social media and garnered international attention - including a post from Fusion last month.
For Ramallah resident Nejmah Awad, 23, the burger joint is a source of local pride.
I was just scrolling through Facebook this morning and and I see all these people from the United States - they are not Arabic, they are not Palestinian, and they are all envying Palestine because we have [Krusty Krab] now.
If the concept proves successful, the owners hope to expand.
We hope that, next year, the first branch will be in Gaza, because the children of Gaza need this, said co-owner Nidaa Fsaisi-Soboh.
