The Borough of Peapack/Gladstone is unique in that two separate, petite, hamlets combined themselves into what is now known as Peapack-Gladstone. volumes are falling, and the U.S. Postal Service is losing billions of dollars a year while accumulating large liabilities. The dawn of the Email Era has significantly impacted the old days of penning letters to friends and family and replaced it with an instant and free alterative. The USPS has partly offset declining mail revenues with growth in package revenues. Despite the common myth that Amazon is the reason that the post office is dying, the truth of the matter is the expenses are consistently more than revenue. The USPS’s finances look bleak overall.
From 2009 to 2018 First-Class mail volume dropped 31% and those pesky spam mails dropped 6%. Magazines and other periodicals dropped 38%. However, the shipping of package rose 100%. Some of the cost factors affecting the post office revenue is the have increased the area of delivery 6% and increased the amount of vehicles 6%. They have also cut the total amount of employees in the 9 years 11%.
So how are they losing money. The post office takes in about 70 billion dollars annually only 4 % increase from 2009 from shipping and postage costs. Their operating costs is 74.4 Billion dollars. The total amount of assets have decreased to 27.6 billion while their total amount of liability has skyrocketed to 89.3 billions dollars. A 167% increase from 2009.
These numbers tells us this about the post office.
-Mail demand is falling and package demand is rising. The problem is that mail is more profitable and accounts for most of USPS revenues.
- USPS management has cut costs where it can, such as by reducing the worker count. But Congress resists other cost savings such as closing post offices, even though the number of retail customers is falling.
- Marketing mail has become by far the largest type of mail by volume. Thus we have a vast fleet of trucks driving around the country, burning gas and creating pollution, and the main thing being delivered is junk mail.
- More than three-quarters of USPS costs are employee compensation, which includes excessive health and pension benefits. About four-fifths of the USPS labor force is unionized.
- USPS has been losing money for more than a decade. Expenses are a few billion a year higher than revenues.
- USPS assets are falling and liabilities are soaring. The largest liabilities are unfunded retiree health benefits, worker compensation costs, and debt.
So how does the Mail process work:
The first step is Collection: After a customer has deposited a letter destined for a distant address in a collection box, a postal carrier removes all of the mail from the box and takes it to the Post Office. That letter and mail collected by other carriers of that Post Office are placed on a truck and taken to a mail processing plant.
The second step is Culling and Postmarking: Postal workers send the letter through a machine that rapidly separates mail by shape, separating letters from large envelopes and packages know as the culling operation. The machine orients letters so that all addresses face the same way and are right side up. It then applies a postmark with the date and place where the letter was sorted and cancellation lines so the stamp cannot be reused, in order to protect postal revenue.
Step three is Scanning and Lifting Images: Every letter gets identified by a code consisting of a series of florescent bars imprinted on the back. The address on the front of each letter is scanned by an optical character reader. Images of letters that could not be successfully read are transmitted to a remote encoding center for further processing. All letters are placed in trays and moved to the next piece of automated equipment for barcode application.
The next step is to Apply a Barcode and Sort: Linked with the identification code, a barcode is sprayed on the front of the letter. Representing the specific delivery address, the barcode consists of tall and short bars used for all further sorting. The barcode sends a letter into a bin on the machine for a particular range of ZIP Codes; these identify the next processing plant.

Beaucolic Tewksbury Township, NJ, is located in the northeastern part of Hunterdon County, approximately 50 miles from Manhattan. Incorporated as one of the New Jersey's first 104 townships in 1798, today it comprises 31 square miles and includes the small villages of Oldwick, Mountainville, Cokesbury, and Pottersville, each with an historic district listed on the National Register. Streets here are lined with antique homes, high-steepled churches, general stores, elegant inns, and a host of charming shops. Tewksbury Township is full of horseback riding trails, 100 miles of which are maintained by the Tewksbury Trail association for equestrian use. Residents know to proceed with caution at these trail crossings, and to drive slowly across the narrow roads, bridges, and hamlets throughout the area. On weekends, when traffic is light, bicyclists are drawn to local roadways for their scenic beauty and perhaps lunch at the General Store in Oldwick. Philadelphia / New Jersey Police Chase (July 27, 2015)
PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Investigators said on Tuesday that the man who led police officers from multiple agencies on a two hour pursuit that spanned two states was wanted for stealing underwear.
Robert Ritter, of Blackwood, N.J., was captured after the chase on Monday evening.
Police say Ritter stole $10.50 worth of underwear from a Shop Rite store in Brooklawn, New Jersey earlier this month. Police say he has an extensive violent criminal history.
Ritter was released from the hospital and into police custody on Tuesday morning to face aggravated assault and other charges.
Police also released a mug shot of Ritter from a previous arrest.
The dramatic chase ended Monday night when authorities clipped the suspect's van, flipping the vehicle over.
The pursuit began two hours earlier, around 8:00 p.m. Monday, in Oaklyn, Camden County. That's when police tried to stop Ritter, and they say he took off.
Oaklyn Police had run his license plate and discovered there were warrants out for Ritter's arrest.
Action News has learned those warrants include the following:
-Gloucester Township: Violating a restraining order against stalking and domestic violence
-Mt. Ephraim Borough: Traffic violation
-Brooklawn Borough: Strong-arm robbery at a Shop Rite supermarket
Police say the white van Ritter was driving Monday night left Oaklyn and crossed the Walt Whitman Bridge.
The vehicle then went on I-95 South in Pennsylvania, off at Bartram Avenue, back on I-95 North, off at Broad, back onto I-95 North and back over the Walt Whitman into New Jersey.
From there the van went through Camden and into Deptford. At one point, the driver stopped at the Deptford Mall before taking off again.
The van then went across the Ben Franklin Bridge, down around Independence Mall, and looped through Society Hill back into Old City and Northern Liberties before heading back onto I-95 South.
The chase ended at Island and Enterprise Avenues in Southwest Philadelphia as police bumped the van causing it to roll over. Ritter emerged from the van with his hands up, and police arrested him.
Philadelphia Police spokesman Lt. John Stanford said Tuesday morning that Oaklyn Police led the chase, with Philadelphia police and state troopers assisting.
At one point, the suspect hit several police cruisers and the chase reached high speeds on the highway.
Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey has changed the way Philadelphia responds during chases, opting on the side of caution and, when in doubt, pulling back.
Stanford said Philadelphia Police largely monitored Monday night's chase with its chopper. Pennsylvania State Police finally made the call to conduct a pit maneuver to flip the suspect vehicle.
State police are trained for such maneuvers. Philadelphia police are not.
The suspect received minor injuries in the crash. He was taken to Mercy Hospital for treatment and released into police custody early Tuesday morning.
He will be charged in Philadelphia with three counts of aggravated assault against the officers that he crashed into and then extradited eventually to New Jersey to face the robbery charges, Walker said Monday night.
No officers were injured.
The van was taken to the Philadelphia Police impound facility as investigators worked to secure a search warrant and check for any weapons inside the van.
Police say during the chase they operated as if the driver was armed.
