Lyrics:
We are the eight major Islands
of Hawaii
In the North Pacific Moana
We’re warm and free
We are the eight major Islands
of Hawaii
In the west of the United States
We’ll be
I'm Hawaiʻi
Also, known as The Big Island
I have 11 of the World's 13 Climate Zones
Without even trying
My big volcano
It’s called Mauna Kea
It’s peak’s the highest point in
all Hawaiian Islands I’d love to meet ya
The Island of Maui
This is what I am
I’m the Second largest of
all the Hawaiian Islands
Haleakalā is my highest point
you see
Its the tallest peak on me in feet at
10,023
I’m O‘ahu
Known as The Gathering Place
The third largest of the Hawaiian Islands
I’m glad we touched base
I have Honolulu
It’s Hawaii’s capital you know
Kaʻala is my highest peak
It’s someplace you could go
My name is Kauaʻi
Soma call me The Garden Isle
The 4th largest of the Hawaiian Islands
My beauty will make you smile
My inactive shield volcano is
Called Kawaikini
It is my highest point
Now sing the chorus with me
We are the eight major Islands
of Hawaii
In the North Pacific Moana
We’re warm and free
We are the eight major Islands
of Hawaii
In the west of the United States
We’ll be
I’m the Island of Molokaʻi
The fifth largest island you’ll meet
Also called The Friendly Isle
To visit me is such a treat
Kamakou is the name of
my highest peak
It’s part of the east side of my island
And where lava once leaked
I wanted to say Hi
My name is Lānaʻi
I’m the 6th largest island
And over 3300 feet high
I also go by the name of
The Pineapple Isle
Because I was a Pineapple plantation
That did last awhile
The island of Niʻihau
Or The Forbidden Isle
I’m the 7th largest of the 8 majors
and 69 square miles
Brighamia insignis plants
Are protected on me
I’m a privately owned Island
With an invite, you can see
Kahoʻolawe
That’s my name if you please
I am the smallest of the 8 majors
Now here’s more about me
I'm just over 44.5 Square Miles
You know
My highest point is over 1,483 ft
Or so
I’m the major Hawaiian Islands
Aloha to you my friends
My capital’s Honolulu
Mahalo this is the end
We are the eight major Islands
of Hawaii
In the North Pacific Moana
We’re warm and free
We are the eight major Islands
of Hawaii
In the west of the United States
We’ll be

My Name Is Opukahaia - Hawaiian Mission Houses - performed by Moses Goods
The Hawaiian Mission Houses’ History Theatre Performances (actors dressed in period costume telling the life events of select individuals) have been bringing Hawaiian history to life since 2011.
Originally developed and presented at a historical figure’s gravesite, these carefully researched and artfully scripted 15 - 20-minute monologues have grown to be a large cast of characters.
The most recent, ʻŌpūkahaʻia, was debuted at Hawaiian Mission Houses on the bicentennial of Henry ʻŌpūkahaʻia’s death, February 17, 2018.
The script of ʻŌpūkahaʻia’s life was researched by Mike Smola at Hawaiian Mission Houses and prepared by actor Moses Goods. Moses Goods is also the actor who portrays ʻŌpūkahaʻia. The presentation is moving – and enlightening - on the life and times of ʻŌpūkahaʻia.
Performances are now available for statewide presentations.
Mission Houses coordinates the scheduling of the performances; organizations or individuals sponsoring events where ʻŌpūkahaʻia are to be performed should contact Mike Smola at Hawaiian Mission Houses (MSmola@missionhouses.org; (808) 447-3914).
For performances on the Neighbor Islands, the anticipated cost is $1,500 (which covers the cost of 2 same-day performances, as well as travel and related expenses (with no anticipated overnight expenses)).
Some Background on ‘Ōpūkaha‘ia:
In 1807, a young Hawaiian boy, ʻŌpūkahaʻia, swam out to the ‘Triumph’, a trading ship anchored in Kealakekua Bay. Both of ʻŌpūkahaʻia’s parents and his younger brother had been slain during the battles on the island. He set sail for New York, stopping first in China. He eventually ended up in New Haven CT.
ʻŌpūkahaʻia was eager to study and learn. He “was sitting on the steps of a Yale building, weeping. A solicitous student stopped to inquire what was wrong, and Obookiah (the spelling of his name, based on its sound) said, ‘No one will give me learning.’” The student was Edwin Dwight.
Later, the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM) formed the Foreign Mission School; ʻŌpūkahaʻia was one of its first students. He yearned “with great earnestness that he would (return to Hawaiʻi) and preach the Gospel to his poor countrymen.”
ʻŌpūkahaʻia died on February 17, 1818. Dwight put together a book, ‘Memoirs of Henry Obookiah’ (the spelling of the name based on its pronunciation). It was an edited collection of ʻŌpūkahaʻia’s letters and journals/diaries. The book about his life was printed and circulated after his death.
ʻŌpūkahaʻia, inspired by many young men with proven sincerity and religious fervor of the missionary movement, had wanted to spread the word of Christianity back home in Hawaiʻi; his book inspired missionaries to volunteer to carry his message to the Hawaiian Islands.
On October 23, 1819, the Pioneer Company of missionaries from the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM) from the northeast United States, set sail on the Thaddeus for the Sandwich Islands (now known as Hawai‘i).
After about 160 days at sea, on March 30, 1820, the Pioneer Company of American Protestant missionaries first see the Islands. Later that day, they learned the kapu was abolished, Kamehameha died and Liholiho was now King. They landed at Kailua-Kona on April 4, 1820.

HOW TO MOVE TO HAWAII // AS A FOREIGNER
You can move to Hawaii! The only thing stopping you is you!
I studied on Oahu which made it possible for me to stay in the US.
This is just an example how I did it and I am sure there are many of you who did it differently.
The downside of a student visa is that I had to work a lot in advanced since I was not able to work with my student F1 visa.
I recommend visiting the island before since it is extremely expensive to life there. I also made a vide about pros ans cons of living in Hawaii if you wanna check that out:
In 2016 you can easily spend $1,500 for a one bedroom or studio apartment in downtown Honolulu if you want to be close enough to walk or bike to anything you need to get to. I mean you can EASILY spend that. For food, you can spend $500 per month for one person or much more, up to you.
Or, you can learn to live with less and get a room in a house for around $750. You could eat on $350 to $400 per month in Hawaii if you’re smart. The Chinese market in the morning on the weekends has lots of fruits and vegetables for reasonable prices.
Here you can find more visa information that might fit you better:)
If you have any questions about Hawaii :) feel free to leave a comment. I don’t know everything about life in Hawaii obviously, but I’ll be happy to give it a shot.

Rail to Nowhere: Honolulu, Hawaii's Train Boondoggle
Read the full article here
In 2011, officials in Honolulu, Hawaii began construction on a controversial 20-mile rail project partly because of almost $1.8 billion in federal subsidies to President Barack Obama's home state. The project's total cost estimate stands at $5.3 billion, but if other similar projects are any indication, the final price tag will increase dramatically before anyone even gets to buy a ticket. What's playing out in the Aloha State is happening all over the country.
This rail project is our bridge to nowhere, says University of Hawaii law professor Randall Roth. We are convinced that it will be billions of dollars over budget and we think they will try to get the federal government to bail them out.
Hawaii has some of the worst congestion and roads in the country and studies consistently rank its major city, Honolulu, among the worst cities for traffic. The INRIX Index has estimated that Honolulu drivers waste an average of 58 hours in traffic every year during peak travel times.
Yet there's no reason to believe the Honolulu's rail project will do anything to improve traffic congestion. In fact, it's likely to divert resources from more-affordable solutions.
The one thing about these projects [is that] they are very inviting politically, says former Hawaii Gov. Ben Cayetano. Along with Cliff Slater of Honolulutraffic.com and University of Hawaii's Roth, Cayetano has filed a federal lawsuit against the rail project that's held up construction. They claim the city misled the public about the total cost of the project and didn't deliver fully on a required review of alternative solutions to a rail line.
Panos Prevedouros, one of the state's leading transportation experts, says the rail plan that the feds approved will siphon off state funding for the area's bus system. The project's own report, which Prevedouros says is filled with overly optimistic estimates of rail ridership, still shows that Honolulu's congestion will be worse in the future with rail. The point of doing any cost effective type of analysis is out of the window, says Panos, the benefits are not there.
The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals has ordered an expedited hearing for the federal rail lawsuit on August 15th.
