ULU (KNIFE) FACTORY STORE TOUR - Downtown Anchorage Alaska
A tour of the Ulu Knife factory store in Anchorage Alaska near the Alaska Railroad Depot. Unfortunately they weren't making any knives at the time of my visit.
All About the Ulu
ALL ABOUT THE ULU (all that fits into 13mins, 21 seconds, anyway)
Thanks for your interest. In this video I try to provide details about ulu design, history, and use in a way that goes beyond the standard two-sentence description of an ulu. I also encourage people to appreciate not just the tool but the complex history of the people(s) whose cultures are as varied and sophisticated as the blades they used.
I wouldn't know anything about the ulu if it weren't for a) my Inupiaq friends in Alaska; b) museums like those in Anchorage and Juneau; c) several great books on Inuit and Alaska history (BOOKS listed below); d) many great ulu makers around the world; and e) my own experiences making and using uluit over the last several years.
Books that I found very informative:
Ancient People of the Arctic by Robert McGhee
The Last Imaginary Place: A Human History Of The Arctic World
also by Robert McGhee
The Exhibits of the Smithsonian Institution and the United States National Museum at the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition Seattle, WA, 1909
On Instagram I go by ulu_minded and in my posts there you'll see ulu pics and info I post in the compulsive way that runs my passion. Should you want me to make you a custom ulu, that can be arranged. My email is jvvanb@gmail.com

Alaska Tour - Anchorage, AK - Stop #13
Today we traveled southward from Denali, AK to Anchorage, AK. Along the way, we saw beautiful white capped mountains and finally got a good look at towering Mt. McKinley! Depending on which way you viewed it from determined if the peak was cloud covered or not!
In Anchorage we had 5 days of touring and free time to explore. Our city tour took us to see Black Elk Crafts, Alaska Fur Exchange, Ulu Factory, Float Plane Harbor and Ship Creek! At Earthquake Hill, Jeannie Coushaine gave a talk about surviving the great 1964 Earthquake, and what she saw! That night we had a ‘lively’ party with good food, drinks, and dancing!
The next day we had a Meet & Greet with Kelly Griffin a famous Iditarod musher! After her talk, Charlie Coushaine presented Spike a panoramic picture taken at Emerald Lake that was signed by everyone in the tour! He also read a poem he wrote entitled ‘Spike the Wagon Master’! Afterwards we had ‘Date Night’ which included a family style chicken dinner at Sourdough Barbecue, a Dusty Sourdough show, an Alaskan Video and a tour of the Chocolate Waterfall next door!
Our last day in Anchorage had us travel just over a couple hours south east thru the Whittier Tunnel for a 6 hour Prince William Sound Glacier Cruise! Along the way we saw spectacular scenery including many glaciers, whales, eagles, waterfalls and seals!
We would greatly appreciate your support by using the link below for all your future Amazon.com purchases. It will be totally transparent to your Amazon shopping, and doesn’t cost you a thing!

Anchorage Museum
The Anchorage Museum at Rasmuson Center is a museum located in downtown Anchorage in the U.S. state of Alaska. Beginning as a public-private partnership to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Alaska purchase, it opened in 1968 with an exhibition of 60 borrowed Alaska paintings and a collection of 2,500 historic and ethnographic objects loaned from the local historical society, and the museum has been enlarged several times since. Its official name is now Anchorage Museum at Rasmuson Center. The museum completed a $106-million addition and renovation project in May 2010.
Visiting Anchorage Museum, Museum in Anchorage, Alaska, United States
The museum opened in 1968 in a 10,000-square-foot (930 m2) building with an exhibition of 60 borrowed Alaska paintings, a collection of 2500 historic and ethnographic objects, and a staff of two. The museum has grown steadily and expanded three times since then, most recently in 2010, to its current size of 170,000 square feet (16,000 m2) with a collection of 25,000 objects and 500,000 historic photographs, and a staff of more than 50. First accredited in 1973, the museum has maintained its accreditation since. For more detail, visit this link:

Where in the heck is Girdwood? And why would we go there?
We left Homer, heading north, unsure of our destination. We knew we were going to stop in Girdwood for a hike and Anchorage for groceries. We still hadn't decided if we were going to head back south toward Valdez first or just start our descent back down out of Alaska.
Our first stop was Girdwood. We had heard about an easy hike that had a hand tram over a river. This sounded cool, so we headed that way. Doug and Emmett stayed behind in the RV, which was a good choice because it was a muddy, slippery trail. It was raining and we got wet. As we approached the hand tram there were a bunch of people with lots of camera equipment. We asked the first what they were doing and she said, making a film. I guess we had already figured that one out. The second person we asked a more direct question, What is your film about? He thought he had a pretty good sense of humor and said Mayonnaise. We finally asked a third and he said it was a UCLA college thesis project. Anyway, there were a bunch of people and they pulled us across the hand tram, which was nice because it was a long way and it's heavy to pull. It was awesome, well worth the hike in the rain.
We were still debating on whether or not to go the extra 120 miles to check out Valdez. We took a vote and it was 50/50. The weather wasn't looking good, cold and rainy. We searched on the internet to see what we'd be missing. Besides checking out a new place and the beach the thing the kids would like the most would be the fish hatchery. The salmon are spawning and heading upstream back to the hatchery to lay their eggs. And since there are so many salmon there are also seals looking for a meal. This would be cool to see but with the not so great gas mileage we get in the RV, it would cost us about an extra $150 in gas, plus 2 days of driving. We've seen a lot of seals and salmon and hatcheries, so we decided a better option would be to spend a couple days in the Largest National Park.
So we headed to Anchorage on our way to Wrangell St. Elias. In the travel magazines the kids saw an Ulu factory tour. It was more of a gift shop, but they did get to see how the Ulu knives are made. We also took a trolley to the federal building where they were able to get a couple more Jr. Ranger badges and do a scavenger hunt. Then we headed to Costco and filled the fridge and cupboards and had some pizza for lunch. And drove some more before ending our day with a delicious salmon dinner in the Winnebago in the parking lot of Wasilla Walmart.
Next stop, Wrangell-St. Elias National Park.
