Shrunken Heads, Death, Prostitutes Vaginas - Viktor Wynd Museum
Weird places to see in London - Episode 50
Viktor Wynd's Museum of Curiosities is probably the most peculiar place you will visit and definitely one of the top 50 MUST SEE places to go and things to do in London. It is quite unlike any other museum as it has the influence of Viktor Wynd jumping out at you whoever you look.
Vaginas of Victorian prostitutes in jars of formaldehyde, Amy Winehouse's poo in a jar, David Bowie's mullet and Russell Brand's pubic hair to name but a few of the oddities on offer.
Viktor Wynd, the head curator is the chancellor of the Last Tuesday Society which started life at Harvard and no doubt found its way to London after Wynd studied fine art in Florida. They put on masked balls, danse macabres, art exhibitions and even seances and if you like you can do a cocktail class in the bar of the museum where they have expert mixologists on hand.
Viktor Wynd is a dandy from a bygone age, belonging more in an 18th century gothic novel than modern times and feasts on invertebrates amongst other odd behaviour.
I would definitely recommend his personal tour of the museum otherwise you might miss some of the eccentric and remarkable stories connected with each exhibit. Each and every one has its own story attached and you could listen to him for hours as he recites poetry and speaks of his artist friends like Sebastian Horsley crucifying himself.
If you visit nothing else make sure you see this extraordinary place at 11 Mare Street, Hackney, London.

London's Museum Of Curiosities Holds The Weird And Wonderful: STORE CRAZY
SUBSCRIBE to Barcroft TV:
Shrunken heads, celebrity poo and chocolate prime ministers are just a few of the Victor Wynd Museum’s favourite things. From the outside of this small London museum, It’s hard to tell what exactly is on display - and if you thought the taxidermy and skeletons on the ground floor were unusual just wait until you go down the spiral staircase – where things get a lot weirder. Originally intended to run for just six months, due to its popularity, eight years later the Victor Wynd museum still welcomes 300-500 people every week.

Slavery, Empire, and the Cabinet of Curiosities: Hans Sloane and the Origins of the British Museum
February 28, 2018
James Delbourgo
In 1759, London’s British Museum opened its doors for the first time, the first free national public museum in the world. In this Phi Beta Kappa Lecture at Medical Center Hour, historian James Delbourgo explores the role of slavery and imperialism in making this now venerable institution possible by exploring the career of its founder, Anglo-Irish physician Sir Hans Sloane. Sloane worked in Jamaica as a plantation doctor, used money from sugar plantations in the caribbean and from the Atlantic slave trade to support his collecting, and created his own personal imperial network to assemble one of the greatest cabinets of curiosities in the world—and one of the key institutional legacies of the Enlightenment.
Co-presented with Phi Beta Kappa (Beta of Virginia), President's Commission on Slavery and the University, Department of History, and History of the Health Sciences Lecture Series, Historical Collections, Claude Moore Health Sciences Library
