The Howe Ridge Fire is a wildfire in Glacier National Park in the U.S. state of Montana. Ignited by a thunderstorm on the evening of August 11, 2018, the fire was located on the northwest side of Lake McDonald. Two other fires were also started in the park due to the storm. On August 12th National Park Service officials issued a mandatory evacuation of private cabins and federally owned properties including the Lake McDonald Lodge complex which was temporarily closed.[2] On August 13th, National Park officials then closed the 32 miles (51 km) of the Going-to-the-Sun Road from Apgar Village to Logan Pass on the west side of the park after extreme fire conditions occurred the previous evening, threatening multiple structures.[3] By August 14th the fire had spread to over 2,500 acres (1,000 ha). Though fire fighting conditions had improved by August 14th, a preliminary damage assesstment stated that at least seven private residences and several other structures belonging to the National Park Service had been consumed by the blaze at the Kelly's Camp Historic District and a number of other park service owned structures at the Wheeler residence. The Lake McDonald Ranger Station was saved by firefighters after it's roof had been on fire.[4] Thick haze and smoke obscured the fire on August 15th and while weather conditions remained favorable for fire growth, the haze kept the fire from spreading greatly.[1] Haze and smoke made exact measurements of the amount of acreage burned difficult to determine, however infrared imagery indicated that the fire was 3,500 acres (1,400 ha) by August 16th.[5]Glacier National Park is a national park located in the U.S. state of Montana, on the Canada–United States border with the Canadian provinces of Alberta and British Columbia. The park encompasses over 1 million acres (4,000 km2) and includes parts of two mountain ranges (sub-ranges of the Rocky Mountains), over 130 named lakes, more than 1,000 different species of plants, and hundreds of species of animals. This vast pristine ecosystem is the centerpiece of what has been referred to as the Crown of the Continent Ecosystem,” a region of protected land encompassing 16,000 square miles (41,000 km2).[3]
The region that became Glacier National Park was first inhabited by Native Americans. Upon the arrival of European explorers, it was dominated by the Blackfeet in the east and the Flathead in the western regions. Under pressure, the Blackfeet ceded the mountainous parts of their treaty lands in 1895 to the federal government; it later became part of the park. Soon after the establishment of the park on May 11, 1910, a number of hotels and chalets were constructed by the Great Northern Railway. These historic hotels and chalets are listed as National Historic Landmarks and a total of 350 locations are on the National Register of Historic Places. By 1932 work was completed on the Going-to-the-Sun Road, later designated a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark, which provided greater accessibility for automobiles into the heart of the park.
Chicago zoo-keepers prepare for dangerous cold
(29 Jan 2019) Chicago and the rest of northern Illinois is feeling the grip of a dangerous cold wave. Forecasters say the actual temperature could dip to 27 below zero with wind chill values as low as 55 below.
Chicago's Lincoln Park Zoo is closing early Tuesday afternoon and will remain closed Wednesday and Thursday. Closing the zoo is really a safety issue for the staff, for any potential visitors that would come out to the zoo, and then for the animals as well.
The rail service Metra uses gas powered heaters to keep switches from freezing and disrupting service used by tens of thousands of Chicago-area commuters. Metra spokeswoman Meg Thomas-Reile says they are essentially a giant gas grill that helps keep rail traffic functioning at at points that see hundreds of train movements each day.
Chicago Public Schools officials have canceled Wednesday classes. The Art Institute of Chicago and Field Museum will also be closed Wednesday.

Puerto Rico: As Whitefish Contract Faces Scrutiny, Fluor and Other Companies Move to Privatize Water
- We look at the recovery of Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria, which dominated a Senate hearing Tuesday and was supposed to be the focus of another hearing in the House today, before it was canceled. San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz was set to testify at the hearing alongside FEMA chief Brock Long. Earlier Tuesday, Long testified before the Senate that his agency had nothing to do with approving the controversial $300 million no-bid contract with Whitefish Energy, a tiny company based in the Montana hometown of Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke. Meanwhile, Democracy Now!’s Juan González says other companies are moving in to privatize other services on the island, such as the public water utility.

The Reality On The Ground In Puerto Rico
The US oligarchy is more interested in cashing in on hurricane Maria than helping the suffering Puerto Rican people. Watch the full episode here:
Puerto Rico has now endured the longest power failure in U.S. history, after Category 4 Hurricane Maria tore a path of destruction across the island on Sept. 20. One of the contracts the island's beleaguered government signed in order to get the lights turned back on is with a tiny Montana-based company named Whitefish Energy.
The contract, worth $300 million, calls for Whitefish — which employed just 2 employees as of late last month — to repair power lines to connect critical infrastructure. The no-bid contract with a tiny, inexperienced company that happens to be based in the hometown of Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke has raised eyebrows in Congress and Puerto Rico, where multiple investigations are now underway to determine how the contract was awarded.*
