The Wishing Bell

Warsaw North, City Walk - Poland 4K Travel Channel
Instead of going directly from the Castle Square to the north to the Old Town Market Square, we walk first through Kanonia Street to Kanonia-Square. In the middle is the Warsaw Wish Bell. Allegedly your wishes are fulfilled when you circle the massive bronze bell. The square lies behind the Gothic St. John's Archcathedral and used to be the associated cemetery. Later one dissolved the cemetery and converted it into apartment buildings. In the eastern corner there is a curious building, house no. 18. It is the house with the narrowest facade in Europe. The facade is less than 2 m wide. It was built in this way because at that time the property tax was levied on the basis of the width of the facade.
From here we reach the Old Town Market Place in a few steps. It forms the historical center of Warsaw. After the nearly complete destruction by the Nazis at the end of the 2nd World War, one rebuilt the Old Town from 1949 to 1955 as true to the original as possible. In 1980 it was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Thus the old town presents itself almost exactly like in the 15th century.
We let the hustle and bustle, and the pictures of this fantastic scenery have an effect on us for a while. Then we walk to the front section of the cathedral. Then we turn around, pass the Old Town Market Square again and go to the Barbican. This fortified outpost outside the city walls lies between the Old Town and the New Town.
Via the Freta, we pass the New Town Market Place with the sacrament inner church of St. Kazimierz. It served as a military hospital during the Warsaw Uprising. Later, the dome collapsed during a bombing raid and hundreds of injured persons, doctors, and nurses died.
We turn into Kościelna street and stand in front of the 5-star Mamaison Hotel Le Regina. But we change our minds and go to the Zakroczymska Street, leave the school for hearing impaired and deaf children on the right and arrive at Legionów Fort. It consists of a three-story artillery tower. The fort was part of the Citadel and later the Warsaw Fortress. From the beginning of the 20th century, it was a prison.
Further south, we reach the Multimedia Fountain Park. In the evening, colorful light and water games are performed here, every Friday and Saturday from May to September. On the other side of the Vistula is an amusement park with a beautiful beach.

DZWON NA KANONII W WARSZAWIE THE WISHING BELL IN WARSAW'S OLD TOWN
Dzwon na Kanonii (na Placyku Kanonia) na Starym Mieście w Warszawie, sfilmowany o 14:17 6 maja 2018. The wishing bell (historical landmark) on Kanonia Square in the Old Town in Warsaw, filmed at 2:17 P.M. on May 6, 2018.
Ulica Kanonia w Warszawie – trójboczny placyk położony na tyłach katedry św. Jana w Warszawie, u zbiegu ulic Dziekanii, Jezuickiej i uliczki wiodącej z dziedzińca kuchennego Zamku Królewskiego.
Wcześniej był on eksponatem Muzeum Narodowego w Warszawie.

ZAMEK KRÓLEWSKI W WARSZAWIE 20 MAJA 2018 THE ROYAL CASTLE IN WARSAW
The Royal Castle in Warsaw, filmed at 1:53 P.M. on May 20, 2018.
The Royal Castle in Warsaw (Polish: Zamek Królewski w Warszawie) is a castle residency that formerly served throughout the centuries as the official residence of the Polish monarchs. It is located in the Castle Square, at the entrance to the Warsaw Old Town. The castle was enlarged in 1598-1619. The reconstruction and enlargement was designed by Giovanni Battista Trevano - (born in Lugano, Switzerland, died 1644 in Krakow, Poland) an Italian-speaking architect who worked in Poland as royal architect for King Sigismund III Vasa, of the Vasa dynasty, which ruled Poland at the time. The personal offices of the king and the administrative offices of the Royal Court of Poland were located there from the sixteenth century until the Partitions of Poland (1772-1795). Initially the complex served as the residence of the Dukes of Masovia, and since the sixteenth century, the seat of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth: the King and Parliament (Chamber of Deputies and Senate). In its long history the Royal Castle was repeatedly plundered and devastated by the invading Swedish, Brandenburgian, Prussian and Tsarist armies. The Constitution of 3 May 1791, the first of its type in Europe and the world's second-oldest codified national constitution after the 1789 U.S. Constitution, was drafted here by the Four-Year Sejm. In the 19th century, after the collapse of the November Uprising - after 1830, it was used as an administrative centre by the Tsar and was re-designed for the needs of the Imperial Russian administration. During the course of World War I it was the residence of the German Governor-General. In 1920-1922 the Royal Castle was the seat of the Polish Head of State and between 1926 and World War II (1939) the building was the residence of the Polish president, Ignacy Mościcki. Burned and looted by the Nazi Germans following the Invasion of Poland in 1939 and almost completely destroyed in 1944 after the failed Warsaw Uprising, the Castle was completely rebuilt and reconstructed; in 1965 the surviving fragments of the castle and the Royal Library, the adjacent Copper-Roof Palace and the Kubicki Arcades were registered as historical monuments by the government. Reconstruction of the castle carried out in 1971-1984 was led by the Civic Committee, responsible for the reconstruction of Warsaw. It was afforded by mainly US donations. In 1980, the Royal Castle, together with the Old Town was registered as a protected UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today it is a historical and national monument, and is listed as a national museum visited by over 500,000 people every year.
The Royal Castle, due to its iconic appearance and its long history, is one of Warsaw's most recognizable landmarks.

STORYLINE:
Poles in the southern Polish town of Krakow, where Pope John Paul II once served as bishop and cardinal, mourned his death on Saturday night.
The Wawel Castle's Zygmunt bell rang across the city to signal his passing.
Weeping mourners gathered beside the Bishop's Office in Krakow, where the pope once lived, and bowed their heads in prayer.
The pope is deeply loved in mainly Roman Catholic Poland, where his 26-year pontificate has served as a source of great national pride.
Most popes in recent centuries have been buried in the St Peter's Basilica at the Vatican.
John Paul's wishes have not been made public and many in Poland are speculating he may be laid to rest alongside Polish kings in Krakow's Wawel Cathedral.
Meanwhile, in the pope's hometown of Wadowice, people wept at the news that the pontiff had died.
Many of them learnt of his death at the end of a special Mass in the church where John Paul II worshipped as a boy.

VLOG 18: 09.23.18
Day two in Warsaw!!! We mostly saw different sights around Old Towne for this visit. We saw the Royal Castle, the smallest building in Warsaw, the wishing bell, the main market square, an amber museum, a Warsaw Ghetto Wall memorial, and the Poland Uprising memorial. In the 1940’s Warsaw was bombed by the German’s as a repercussion to the uprising and nearly 85% of the city was destroyed (including 95% of Old Towne). Then a few decades later the people decided to rebuild the Old Towne to look like it used to back before the bombings. Even though the buildings weren’t necessarily the original ones, we still thought it was a beautiful city!
