John Hillerman 1932-2017
John Benedict Hillerman (December 20, 1932 – November 9, 2017) was an American actor best known for his starring role as Jonathan Quayle Higgins III on the television show Magnum, P.I. that aired from 1980–88. For his role as Higgins, Hillerman earned five Golden Globe nominations, winning in 1981, and four Emmy nominations, winning in 1987.
Born in Denison, Texas, He developed an interest in opera at the age of ten, and traveled to Dallas to watch Metropolitan Opera productions. Hillerman attended St. Xavier's Academy, and after graduation, he attended the University of Texas at Austin for three years, majoring in journalism. Hillerman served four years in the United States Air Force from 1953 to 1957, working in maintenance in a B-36 wing of the Strategic Air Command, and achieving the rank of sergeant. He became interested in acting after working with a theatrical group in Fort Worth during his service and After his 1957 discharge, he moved to New York City to study at the American Theatre Wing, and performed in professional theater for the next twelve years, in productions such as King Henry IV, Part II and The Great God Brown. Hillerman was unable to make a living as a stage actor, and he moved to Hollywood in 1969. Hillerman made his motion picture debut in They Call Me Mister Tibbs! (1970) in an uncredited role as a reporter. Director Peter Bogdanovich, with whom Hillerman had previously worked during his stage career, cast Hillerman in his films The Last Picture Show, What's Up, Doc?, and Paper Moon. In 1974, he played a memorable role of Russ Yelburton, the deputy chief of the Los Angeles Water Department in the film classic, Chinatown. Hillerman worked steadily thereafter in film and television in the 1970s, but after being cast in Magnum, P.I., he shot only four additional pictures between 1980 and 1996, with his final performance coming in A Very Brady Sequel. In 1975, Hillerman was a co-star in Ellery Queen as Simon Brimmer, a radio detective who hosted a radio show and tried to outsmart the title character (Jim Hutton). From 1976 to 1980, he had a recurring role as Mr. Conners on the sitcom One Day at a Time, and he co-starred as Betty White's estranged husband on The Betty White Show (1977-1978). He is perhaps best remembered for his role as former British Army Sergeant Major Jonathan Higgins in Magnum, P.I. (1980–88), for which he learned an English accent by listening to a recording of Laurence Olivier reciting Hamlet. He considered Higgins his favorite role. In 1990, Hillerman returned to television to perform for one season as Lloyd Hogan in the sitcom The Hogan Family. After Hillerman retired from acting in 1999, he returned to his home state of Texas.
On November 9, 2017, Hillerman passed away at his Houston home at the age of 84. He had been in declining health near the end of his life.

Sailors of Battleship USS Texas (BB 35) Remember D-Day
A public domain video
USS Texas (BB-35), the second ship of the United States Navy named in honor of the US state of Texas, is a New York-class battleship. The ship was launched on 18 May 1912 and commissioned on 12 March 1914.
Soon after her commissioning, Texas saw action in Mexican waters following the Tampico Incident and made numerous sorties into the North Sea during World War I. When the United States formally entered World War II in 1941, Texas escorted war convoys across the Atlantic and later shelled Axis-held beaches for the North African campaign and the Normandy Landings before being transferred to the Pacific Theater late in 1944 to provide naval gunfire support during the Battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Texas was decommissioned in 1948, having earned a total of five battle stars for service in World War II, and is now a museum ship near Houston, Texas.
Among the world's remaining battleships, Texas is notable for being the only remaining World War I–era dreadnought battleship, though she is not the oldest surviving battleship: Mikasa, a pre-dreadnought battleship ordered in 1898 by the Imperial Japanese Navy and HMS Victory, Nelson's flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar, are both older than Texas. She is also noteworthy for being one of only seven remaining ships and the only remaining capital ship to have served in both World Wars.
Among US-built battleships, Texas is notable for her sizeable number of firsts: the first US Navy vessel to house a permanently assigned contingent of US Marines, the first US battleship to mount anti-aircraft guns, the first US ship to control gunfire with directors and range-keepers (analog forerunners of today's computers), the first US battleship to launch an aircraft, ] from a platform on Turret 2, one of the first to receive the CXAM-1 version of CXAM production radar in the US Navy, the first US battleship to become a permanent museum ship, and the first battleship declared to be a US National Historic Landmark.

Houston (pronounced /ˈhjuːstən/) is the fourth largest city in the United States of America and the largest city within the state of Texas. As of the 2006 U.S. Census estimate, the city has a population of 2.2 million within an area of 600 square miles (1,600 km²). Houston is the seat of Harris County and the economic center of the HoustonSugar LandBaytown metropolitan area—the sixth-largest metropolitan area in the U.S. with a population of around 5.6 million.
Houston was founded on August 30, 1836 by brothers Augustus Chapman Allen and John Kirby Allen[5] on land near the banks of Buffalo Bayou. The city was incorporated on June 5, 1837 and named after then-President of the Republic of Texas—former General Sam Houston—who had commanded at the Battle of San Jacinto, which took place 25 miles (40 km) east of where the city was established. The burgeoning port and railroad industry, combined with oil discovery in 1901, has induced continual surges in the city's population. In the mid-twentieth century, Houston became the home of the Texas Medical Center—the world's largest concentration of healthcare and research institutions—and NASA's Johnson Space Center, where the Mission Control Center is located.
Houston's economy has a broad industrial base in the energy, manufacturing, aeronautics, transportation, and health care sectors; only New York City is home to more Fortune 500 headquarters in the city limits.[6] Commercially, Houston is ranked as a gamma world city, and the area is a leading center for building oilfield equipment. The Port of Houston ranks first in the United States in international waterborne tonnage handled and second in total cargo tonnage handled.[7] The city has a multicultural population with a large and growing international community. It is home to many cultural institutions and exhibits—attracting more than 7 million visitors a year to the Houston Museum District. Houston has an active visual and performing arts scene in the Theater District and is one of few U.S. cities that offer year-round resident companies in all major performing arts.Criminal law is enforced by the Houston Police Department. Houston's murder rate ranked 11th of U.S. cities with a population over 250,000 in 2005.[64] The city's murder rate, however, ranked 3rd among U.S. cities with a population of 1,000,000 or more. Even those statistics were thrown into dispute after local TV news investigator Mark Greenblatt found the Houston Police Department under-counted 2005 homicides. Officially counting just two more of the city's murders would have bumped up the city's murder rate to 2nd place [65].
While nonviolent crime in the city dropped by 2 percent in 2005 compared to 2004, the number of homicides rose by 23.5 percent.[66] Since 2005, Houston has been experiencing a spike in crime, which is due in part to an influx of people from New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina.[67] After Katrina, Houston's murder rate increased 70 percent in November and December 2005 compared to levels in 2004. The city recorded 336 murders in 2005,[66] compared to 272 in 2004.[68]
Houston's homicide rate per 100,000 residents increased from 16.33 in 2005 to 17.24 in 2006.[69] The number of murders in the city increased to 379 in 2006.[66] In 1996, there were about 380 gangs with 8,000 members; of which 2,500 were juveniles.[70]Houston is a multicultural city with a large and growing international community.[102] The metropolitan area is home to an estimated 1.1 million (21.4 percent) residents who were born outside the United States, with nearly two-thirds of the area's foreign-born population from south of the United StatesMexico border.[103] Additionally, more than one in five foreign-born residents are from Asia. [103] The city is home to the nations third largest concentration of consular offices, representing 86 countries.[104]
Houston received the official nickname of Space City in 1967 because it is the location of NASA's Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center. Other nicknames often used by locals include Bayou City, Magnolia City, Clutch City, and H-Town.

Houston’s only Spanish-language Movie Theater Run out of business By AMC?
In many ways, Houston is a great city for Spanish-speaking Americans having the second-highest number of Latinos of any city in the country. About 1 in every 3 residents of Houston speak spanish at home. Viva Cinemas tried to be the first spanish language theater recently. the eight-screen movie theater showed only movies dubbed in Spanish or with Spanish subtitles with American films as well as imported Spanish films. However after only 6 months they closed their doors and are suing AMC claiming they conspired against them and that AMC made “clearance” agreements with the seven biggest movie distributors. It is alleged that if Viva got access to certain films than AMC would not distribute that film at its nearby theaters causing the distributors to back out of supplying Viva with certain films.

Street Folk: Hip-Hop, Car Culture & Black Life in Houston, Texas
Folklorist and ethnomusicologist Langston Wilkins discusses screw, Houston's distinctly local form of hip-hop music that emerged within the city's African American community almost 30 years ago. It is inextricably tied to slab, a vernacular car culture in which mostly young African American men spend countless hours and money transforming outmoded American sedans into spectacular automotive art pieces. In his talk, Wilkins discussed how screw and slab combined to form a unique local tradition that affirmed and empowered working class black Houstonians across several generations.
- Langston Collin Wilkins is a traditional arts specialist at the Tennessee Arts Commission. He earned his doctorate in ethnomusicology from Indiana University. In addition, he served as a fellow for the folklife and traditional arts program of the Houston Arts Alliance and the Houston Museum of African American Culture, where he conducted field work and produced public programs that centered on the traditional arts of Houston's African diasporic communities.

Vincent Salandria interviewed by David Starks, 1994
See complete hypertext/PDF/text-only transcripts of this interview at:
Vincent Salandria speaking in the interview:
[When] the Warren Report came out and I read it. I remember calling Harold [Feldman] after I read it and said, “It seems clear to me, the report is totally convincing. It had to be, the assassination, [at] the very core of the American government, the highest level of power. Because the report reveals quite clearly an assassination by conspiracy. And then comes out with a conclusion that one man did it and did it alone. This contradiction, of the conclusion against the evidence, is a manifestation of great arrogance and great power. Only the center of the American power structure could have effectuated this and expected that the American press would play along with it.”...
I think that what happened in Dealey Plaza was that a duly elected President was fired. That the constitutional process was relegated to a paper-thin façade. That what was left at that time, to American democracy, was relegated to theatrics; to the theatre of the absurd. And that what is happening now is a continuation of what was set forth then and that is, that we became more a militarized society.... The number of poor increases. The injustice of this unequal distribution of wealth escalates. Public education is neglected. The poor are neglected. And we see that although the Cold War has dissipated, the military expenditures remain pretty much flat, hanging close to a 300 billion dollar a year point. We find the President, who I think is a basically decent man, nonetheless coming out for increased expenditures—in the absence of a cold war—for “intelligence.”
That’s why it’s so significant. The people who seized power, November 22, 1963 at Dealey Plaza, are still in power and are still distorting the quality of the American constitutional structure and are still destroying the quality of life in this society....
The Dealey Plaza killing of Kennedy did not only kill a president. It effectively killed the Presidency. Every president who has had to follow Kennedy, even one I can think of with very few brain cells, had to know what happened. Had to know therefore, what could happen, to him if he did not recognize where the power over the Presidency really lay....
Allen Dulles, I saw from reading the transcript, an executive session of the Warren Commission, was involved in a clear crime and covering it up. When Harold Feldman wrote that article, “Oswald and the FBI,” that prompted a secret executive session of the Warren Commission, during the course of this executive session, someone makes mention that Marina Oswald was going to testify before the Commission that Oswald was a double agent, served the Soviet Intelligence and US Intelligence. Allen Dulles said, ‘That’s not going to happen.’
Issac Don Levine, who was an old Czarist right-winger, came to the United States, had solid US intelligence connections. Dulles said, ‘Isaac Don Levine, I have known him, has been assigned by LIFE magazine to write an article about Marina.’ Incidentally he never wrote such an article. He was assigned—I’m sure by American Intelligence, not LIFE magazine—to Marina Oswald to keep her quiet. ‘I have known him. I will talk to him. She will not so testify.’
That’s suborning perjury. That’s a crime. So Allen Dulles was clearly a criminal. Now, he said very early, when the critics started to attack the Warren Commission, ‘If the critics do not believe the Warren Commission, do not believe that Oswald killed the president alone let them name names.’ A heavy burden.
I think, thanks to the work of Gaeton Fonzi, we can name names now. You can be sure that David Atlee Phillips, that fine gentleman, was very cozy with Allen Dulles. You can be absolutely sure that Dulles was not completely fired by JFK over the betrayal that the CIA, under Allen Dulles, did of Kennedy when they sucked him in to this [Bay of Pigs] enterprise contending to him that if it was not successful that the people who hit the beaches would be able to retreat in to the mountains and operate as guerrillas when there was no possible way of doing that. When the real plan was to have the US ships loaded with Marines, the follow-up airstrikes by US and invade when the Bay of Pigs effort failed—that was the real plan. He recognized that. JFK recognized that and fired Dulles. He thought he fired him.
Dulles continued to have the contacts in the CIA. And here we have a man who was fired by Kennedy, had headed up the CIA; around the world, the leading candidate for the killing of Kennedy always was the CIA. None other. And he became the center of the core of the Warren Commission. And we caught him committing a crime, suborning perjury. That man has to be a high suspect in covering it up. Not a suspect, proven in terms of having killed Kennedy, I firmly believe he was a center of it.
