AUSTRIA: VIENNA: TOUR OF CITY'S SEWERS LATEST TOURIST ATTRACTION

The latest tourist attraction in the Austrian capital Vienna is probably not most people's idea of a get-away-from-it-all break.
But a local entrepreneur has come up with the idea of taking holidaymakers on an organised tour of the city's underground sewers to the sound of Scottish bagpipes.
It might sound extraordinary - not to say smelly - but the tour is already proving a big hit with tourists from all over the world.
No, it's not the Pied Piper of Hamlyn come to life.
These are tourists taking a trip round Vienna's sewers - to the sound of Scottish bagpipes.
It might sound revolting, but believe it or not, Austria's latest tourist attraction is proving a big hit with foreign holidaymakers.
Holding live torches, hundreds of people follow the musical tours of the sewers every week.

I was thinking at the beginning that maybe I was going to hear Austrian music, but Scottish is more appropriate. It is so subtle, so different from what you hear when you are upstairs. You don't believe you are in Vienna now, I can't believe you are in Vienna.

The underground tunnels were built 200 years ago and at the time were heralded as one of the technological wonders of the age.
In our time, the sewers were made famous by Orson Wells' classic film The Third Man.
With this idea in mind, film fan Peter Ryborz decided to set up the tourist trail.
He wanted to name his company after the film - but copyright forced him to name it the Fourth Man.
The tours kicked off in a blaze of publicity, but they only attracted a trickle of tourists.
It wasn't until Ryborz persuaded a friend to bring along his bagpipes that they really began to take off.

Everyone knows The Third Man, but no one knows how is looking there and for this I thought now to show it to the whole world.

And visitors don't seem remotely bothered by the idea of miles upon miles of stinking sewage.
In fact, the tours are proving so popular that Ruborz has had to recruit two more pipers to take tourists around the sewers.
He's hoping there will be even more visitors to the vile vaults next year.

Silver screen classic The Third Man was shot in Vienna in 1948. Today, visitors can retrace the footsteps of Harry Lime on the Third Man Tour sewer tour, at the Riesenrad (the Giant Ferris Wheel) and in the Third Man Museum.

Revisiting Carol Reed's timeless thriller, The Third Man, once voted the greatest British film of all time. One of the greatest British films, Carol Reed's classic very consciously emphasises its time and place - post-war Vienna - yet its resonant themes around loss of innocence and a fall from grace render it timeless. Joseph Cotten plays the writer searching the Austrian capital for his missing friend, Harry Lime. He's disturbed to discover that Lime recently died, but soon begins to doubt the official version of events.
