Memorial Day Railfanning at Fort Montgomery, NY - Featuring a SOO SD60
Did some Memorial Day railfanning, and caught a SOO SD60 trailing on a CSX tanker train. The train that came after the tanker train had some interesting cars on it. A very enjoyable day.

John F. Kennedy 100th Anniversary: 2017 National Book Festival
Steven Levingston presents Kennedy and King: The President, the Pastor and the Battle over Civil Rights, Kathy McKeon presents Jackie's Girl: My Life with the Kennedy Family and Thomas Oliphant presents The Road to Camelot: Inside JFK's Five-Year Campaign in a panel discussion on the 100th Anniversary of John F. Kennedy at the 2017 Library of Congress National Book Festival in Washington, D.C.
Speaker Biography: The author of the book Kennedy and King: The President, the Pastor and the Battle over Civil Rights is Steven Levingston, who is the nonfiction editor of The Washington Post. His new book is about the contentious relationship between John Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr. during the civil rights era. Levingston has also worked for The Wall Street Journal, the International Herald Tribune and the Associated Press. He is also the author of Little Demon in the City of Light: A True Story of Murder and Mesmerism in Belle Époque Paris and The Kennedy Baby: The Loss that Transformed JFK.
Speaker Biography: Kathy McKeon spent 13 years as Jacqueline Kennedy's personal assistant and occasional nanny. McKeon was hired as Kennedy's assistant in 1964, when McKeon was just 20 years old and recently arrived from Ireland. Rose Kennedy, Jacqueline's mother-in-law, referred to McKeon as Jackie's girl because she was perpetually by her side, even playing an important part in raising Caroline and John Jr. McKeon also aided Jacqueline during her courtship by Aristotle Onassis, as well as in the aftermath of the assassination of Robert Kennedy. Her book, Jackie's Girl: My Life with the Kennedy Family, provides personal insight on one of the most famous people of the 20th century.
Speaker Biography: Thomas Oliphant was a Washington reporter and columnist for The Boston Globe. He has recently published The Road to Camelot: Inside JFK's Five-Year Campaign, about President Kennedy's rise to the White House and how close he came to losing the election. In 1975 the Globe won a Pulitzer Prize for its reporting on Boston school desegregation, and Oliphant was one of three editors who managed the coverage. Oliphant is often seen on public affairs programs such as the PBS NewsHour and Face the Nation. Historian Doris Kearns Goodwin called The Road to Camelot: A freshly told, endlessly riveting story that captures the reader every step along the way.

Albert, Prince Consort
Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (Francis Albert Augustus Charles Emmanuel; later The Prince Consort; 26 August 1819 – 14 December 1861) was the husband of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.
He was born in the Saxon duchy of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld to a family connected to many of Europe's ruling monarchs. At the age of 20 he married his first cousin, Queen Victoria, with whom he would ultimately have nine children. At first, Albert felt constrained by his position as consort, which did not confer any power or duties upon him. Over time he adopted many public causes, such as educational reform and a worldwide abolition of slavery, and took on the responsibilities of running the Queen's household, estates and office. He was heavily involved with the organisation of the Great Exhibition of 1851. Albert aided in the development of Britain's constitutional monarchy by persuading his wife to show less partisanship in her dealings with Parliament—although he actively disagreed with the interventionist foreign policy pursued during Lord Palmerston's tenure as Foreign Secretary.

Maryland in the American Civil War
During the American Civil War, Maryland, a slave state, was one of the border states, straddling the South and North. Because of its strategic location, bordering the capital city of Washington D.C., and the strong desire of the opposing factions within the state to sway public opinion towards their respective causes, Maryland would play an important role in the American Civil War. Lincoln's suspension of habeas corpus in Maryland, and dismissal of the Supreme Court Chief Justice's ruling that such suspension was unconstitutional, would leave lasting scars.
The first fatalities of the war happened during the Baltimore Riot of April 1861, and the single bloodiest day of combat in American military history occurred near Sharpsburg, Maryland, at the Battle of Antietam, on 17 September 1862. Antietam, though tactically a draw, was strategically enough of a Union victory to give President Abraham Lincoln the opportunity to issue the Emancipation Proclamation, which declared slaves in the Confederacy to be free.

George W. Romney
George Wilcken Romney was an American businessman and Republican Party politician. He was chairman and president of American Motors Corporation from 1954 to 1962, the 43rd Governor of Michigan from 1963 to 1969, and the United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development from 1969 to 1973. He was the father of former Governor of Massachusetts and 2012 Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney and the husband of former Michigan U.S. Senate candidate Lenore Romney.
Romney was born to American parents living in the Mormon colonies in Mexico; events during the Mexican Revolution forced his family to flee back to the United States when he was a child. The family lived in several states and ended up in Salt Lake City, Utah, where they struggled during the Great Depression. Romney worked in a number of jobs, served as a Mormon missionary in the United Kingdom, and attended several colleges in the U.S. but did not graduate from any. In 1939 he moved to Detroit and joined the American Automobile Manufacturers Association, where he served as the chief spokesman for the automobile industry during World War II and headed a cooperative arrangement in which companies could share production improvements. He joined Nash-Kelvinator in 1948, and became the chief executive of its successor, American Motors Corporation, in 1954. There he turned around the struggling firm by focusing all efforts on the compact Rambler car. Romney mocked the products of the Big Three automakers as gas-guzzling dinosaurs and became one of the first high-profile, media-savvy business executives. Devoutly religious, he presided over the Detroit Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

SUMMARY
=======
William Tecumseh Sherman (February 8, 1820 – February 14, 1891) was an American soldier, businessman, educator, and author. He served as a general in the Union Army during the American Civil War (1861–65), for which he received recognition for his outstanding command of military strategy as well as criticism for the harshness of the scorched earth policies he implemented in conducting total war against the Confederate States.Sherman began his Civil War career serving in the First Battle of Bull Run and Kentucky in 1861. He served under General Ulysses S. Grant in 1862 and 1863 during the battles of forts Henry and Donelson, the Battle of Shiloh, the campaigns that led to the fall of the Confederate stronghold of Vicksburg on the Mississippi River, and the Chattanooga Campaign, which culminated with the routing of the Confederate armies in the state of Tennessee. In 1864, Sherman succeeded Grant as the Union commander in the western theater of the war. He proceeded to lead his troops to the capture of the city of Atlanta, a military success that contributed to the re-election of Abraham Lincoln. Sherman's subsequent march through Georgia and the Carolinas further undermined the Confederacy's ability to continue fighting. He accepted the surrender of all the Confederate armies in the Carolinas, Georgia, and Florida in April 1865, after having been present at most major military engagements in the western theater.
When Grant assumed the U.S. presidency in 1869, Sherman succeeded him as Commanding General of the Army, in which capacity he served from 1869 until 1883. As such, he was responsible for the U.S. Army's engagement in the Indian Wars over the next 15 years. Sherman advocated total war against hostile Indians to force them back onto their reservations. He steadfastly refused to be drawn into politics and in 1875 published his Memoirs, one of the best-known first-hand accounts of the Civil War. British military historian B. H. Liddell Hart declared that Sherman was the first modern general.

Founders' Day / ODK Convocation 2015 with James C. Cobb
James C. Cobb, award-winning author, historian of the American South and University of Georgia professor is the featured speaker at Washington and Lee University's Founders Day-Omicron Delta Kappa Convocation on Jan. 19, 5 p.m., at Wilson Concert Hall in the Lenfest Center for the Arts. Cobb speaks on the topic, Would the Past Be Better Off Dead? a reference to a famous line from the works of Southern author William Faulkner suggesting how bruised and battered the South's troublesome past has become from constant skirmishing about its content, meaning and how it should be represented today. The address precedes the induction of 23 undergraduates, nine law students and four honorary initiates into membership in Omicron Delta Kappa, the national leadership honor society for college students, faculty, staff and administrators founded in 1914 at Washington and Lee. The University Singers also perform.
