You can look, but don’t touch
Beijing is certainly ripe with opportunities to witness the artistry and craftsmanship of China’s great dynasties, but if you are looking for the excitement of China’s modern art movement, we have a couple of recommendations off the beaten path.
798 Art Zone (or Dashanzi Art District) is a sprawling 230,000 sq. meter complex filled with galleries, art exhibition spaces, artists’ studios, design firms and retail (fashion, restaurants, etc.). A decommissioned military factory from the 1950s, 798 Art Zone features a Bauhaus-influenced design born from a collaboration between China and East Germany. Who would have known that the “form follows function” aesthetic would provide the perfect backdrop to showcase China’s contemporary art scene. The outposts of established international galleries like TOKYO GALLERY (BTAP), PACE and GALLERIA CONTINUA attract the cognoscenti, but if you are looking for some attainable cool, the retail store of the ULLENS CENTER FOR CONTEMPORARY ART (UCCA) is worth a visit.
Another nearby artistic hotbed is Caochangdi – a ten minute cab ride from 798. Translated as “grasslands” in Mandarin, Caochangdi is a true artists community, home to a diverse group of residents, including migrant workers, farmers, students and artists, most notably, Ai Weiwei. Unlike the more uptown, commercialized feel of 798, Caochangdi displays more of a raw emotion and connection to humanity that certainly inspires creativity amongst its residents. THREE SHADOWS PHOTOGRAPHY ART CENTRE and GALERIE URS MEILE are among Caochangdi’s notable attractions.
Whether you are looking for inspiration, a space for quiet contemplation or just to get out and see something new, there is something here for you.

Zac Lee - 2013-14 Sovereign Asian Art Prize Finalist
Zac Lee was born in Malaysia in 1968. His background in Chinese calligraphy and traditional painting genres allows him to fuse traditional and contemporary techniques as a means of presenting psychological puzzles and his views on society. He lives and works in Malaysia and lectures at Dasein Academy of Art.
This painting was inspired by the quote printed in the artwork: Two roads diverged in a wood and I took the one less travelled by and that made matters worse. In fusing photographic accuracy with his own refined painting style, Zac creates
a work that is wholly original given that few contemporary artists share his training in ancient Chinese calligraphy.
Zac has exhibited widely in both Malaysia and the US. He was awarded a Freeman Fellowship for Asian Artists at the Vermont Studio Centre in the US in 2005, and was also the first Malaysian artist to be admitted into the Three Shadows Photography Art Centre in Beijing, China. His work features in numerous private collections, including those of Bank Negara (Malaysia's central bank) and HSBC (Malaysia).

Ai Weiwei Gave Shameless Cheating Banners to Sina.com
Follow us on TWITTER:
Become a Fan on FACEBOOK:
Well-known Chinese artist Ai Weiwei and supporters
rushed to the 2010 Art Power List ceremony site,
to present the organizers with many silk banners
with Sina's Shameless Cheating on them
to protest against Sina's black-box selection.
Sina.com launched 「Art Power List contest
on Jan. 26.
Ai Weiwei received an overwhelming amount of votes.
However, one day later, on Jan. 27,
the webpage displaying the voting results disappeared.
The webpage suddenly resurfaced on Feb. 15.
Within Artists of the Year category, however,
Ai Weiwei's name has completely disappeared.
In the category Art Institutions of the Year,
Three Shadows Photography Art Center was picked.
Perhaps Sina didn't realize that Ai Weiwei is
actually the center's consultant.
The next day, many netizens voted for the center.
With over 5,000 votes, Three Shadows topped the list.
At 8 p.m. on the same day, the organizer Sina.com
changed the votes received by the 1st runner-up
from around 3,400 votes to over 5,000 votes.
Three Shadows' votes were reduced to 4,500 or so.
Many netizens made screenshots as proof.
On Feb. 17, many called Sina.com to question
about the altered votes,
but Sina.com refused to disclose details.
On Feb. 21, on the award ceremony,
Ai Weiwei and his supporters arrived at the scene,
and presented many banners to the organizers,
with words Sina's Shameless Cheating.
Well-known Chinese musician Little Left Curse:
The whole process is ridiculous and very humorous.
In the cold, people lined up to take photos with Ai,
because the banner at the back said Sina is shameful.
Ai Weiwei said, many so-called artists bow to power.
They have done so many detrimental things.
Yet they still want to obtain the honors.
There are struggles in many countries
to bring such people down.
Ai: In fact, China has no real contemporary art,
because the contemporary art is closely linked to
social realities and the openness of the society.
When a country blocks and oppresses all this,
the platform for arts cannot really exist.
On Feb. 19, Sina.com announced the award ceremony.
Ai openly asked for netizens' opinions online.
Many netizens found that as an open network media,
Sina.com carried out unfair black-box selections.
Sina.com bowed to the CCP's Propaganda Bureau
and 「self-castrated」. As a media, it lost credibility.
Little Left Curse said, art should be more entertaining,
and should allow everyone to participate.
Open and fair rules should be established. He believes
Sina.com may have unspeakable difficulties, because
they are monitored by the Propaganda Bureau.

Suspense: 19 Deacon Street / A Week Ago Wednesday / The House in Cypress Canyon
The program's heyday was in the early 1950s, when radio actor, producer and director Elliott Lewis took over (still during the Wilcox/Autolite run). Here the material reached new levels of sophistication. The writing was taut, and the casting, which had always been a strong point of the series (featuring such film stars as Orson Welles, Joseph Cotten, Henry Fonda, Humphrey Bogart, Judy Garland, Ronald Colman, Marlene Dietrich, Eve McVeagh, Lena Horne, and Cary Grant), took an unexpected turn when Lewis expanded the repertory to include many of radio's famous drama and comedy stars — often playing against type — such as Jack Benny. Jim and Marian Jordan of Fibber McGee and Molly were heard in the episode, Backseat Driver, which originally aired February 3, 1949.
The highest production values enhanced Suspense, and many of the shows retain their power to grip and entertain. At the time he took over Suspense, Lewis was familiar to radio fans for playing Frankie Remley, the wastrel guitar-playing sidekick to Phil Harris in The Phil Harris-Alice Faye Show. On the May 10, 1951 Suspense, Lewis reversed the roles with Death on My Hands: A bandleader (Harris) is horrified when an autograph-seeking fan accidentally shoots herself and dies in his hotel room, and a vocalist (Faye) tries to help him as the townfolk call for vigilante justice against him.
With the rise of television and the departures of Lewis and Autolite, subsequent producers (Antony Ellis, William N. Robson and others) struggled to maintain the series despite shrinking budgets, the availability of fewer name actors, and listenership decline. To save money, the program frequently used scripts first broadcast by another noteworthy CBS anthology, Escape. In addition to these tales of exotic adventure, Suspense expanded its repertoire to include more science fiction and supernatural content. By the end of its run, the series was remaking scripts from the long-canceled program The Mysterious Traveler. A time travel tale like Robert Arthur's The Man Who Went Back to Save Lincoln or a thriller about a death ray-wielding mad scientist would alternate with more run-of-the-mill crime dramas.
Edmund de Waal, “The White Road”
January 12, 2016
The Getty Center, Los Angeles
“What is this thing of whiteness?” Potter and author Edmund de Waal visits the Getty Museum to talk about his new book, The White Road: Journey into an Obsession -- an obsession with porcelain that takes him to the historical roots of “white gold” in China, France, Germany, England, and the U.S. In one shocking chapter, de Waal describes his discovery that Nazi leaders also cherished porcelain and set up a manufactory next to the Dachau concentration camp. In the final portion of the talk, de Waal discusses his latest project creating an exhibition for Los Angeles, which is inspired by the work of John Cage and architect Rudolf Schindler.
Introduction by Timothy Potts, director of the Getty Museum
