It's been nearly 90 years since a U.S. President visited Cuba. And for the past half century, the sight of an American president in Havana would have been unimaginable.
But this week, because we're working to normalize our relations with Cuba, I was able to cross the Florida Straits and meet with and listen to the Cuban people. They told me about their hopes and their struggles, and we talked about what we can do together to help Cubans improve their lives.
What I saw and heard this week will stay with me forever.
I'll remember the beauty of Cuba and the pride Cubans take in their culture. On our first night, Michelle, Malia and Sasha and I walked around Old Havana, where every building, path, and plaza seems filled with the spirit and storied history of the Cuban people. We had a wonderful dinner at one of Havana's paladares, the often family-run restaurants where Americans and Cubans can meet and talk over some tostones.(FULL text VISIT Official IDs-published)

Today, The Primary School team joined parents, community leaders, U.S. Secretary of John King, and Deputy Assistant Secretary for Minority Health Nadine Garcia for a roundtable discussion about the positive work underway in East Palo Alto to link health and education.
East Palo Alto is home to nearly 9,000 children and dozens of organizations that are working to improve children’s health outcomes by providing services both in and out of school. For example, the Ravenswood City School District partners with Sonima Foundation to offer yoga and mindfulness to all children—and all schools in the district have access to a mental health professional. Lewis and Joan Platt East Palo Alto Family YMCA—which has served the community for decades with youth development and health and fitness programs—offers financial assistance to make services available to all families in the community. Ravenswood Family Health Center—in a new facility that opened last year—provides a range of pre-natal, pediatric, and family services and has received recognition from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for being a national model for health care quality and cost efficiency.
These efforts—and many others across the city—are built upon the insight that children need a quality education coupled with a holistic approach to health, family and community support. That’s the mission of The Primary School—to break down barriers between health care and education to make sure that underserved children and their families have the support they need to thrive. - nandrigaludan br yenyesar
