Exploring Thursley Nature Reserve in Surrey
I am out in search of nature. To help me explore Thursley's special nature reserve, in Surrey, is Kevin Hall and Cynthia Walder.
Join us as we take to the boardwalk and venture out over the peat bog and grassland in search of wildlife and all things nature.
It is one of the last remaining heathlands in Surrey. It is famed for its diverse wildlife. Whilst crossbill, red kite, woodlark and stonechat are regularly seen, birds such as Dartford warbler, whinchat, wheatear, tree pipit and redstart are frequently encountered. Rarer birds including osprey, black redstart and great grey shrike also visit the common. The Common is also an ideal place to see viviparous lizard or common lizard.

The A3 Hindhead near Thursley National Nature Reserve from the air, in 4K UHD
I wanted to capture some of the views from Thursley National Nature Reserve with my UMA (or Drone), a Phantom 4 by DJI. This was not the best day to do it and so the results are not brilliant. I will however try and get back on a brighter day (perhaps during Autumn) and try again. The video starts looking North towards Guildford, from the A3 Thursley Junction, but then swings round towards the Hindhead tunnel entrance and the Devil's Punchbowl..

A Visit to Fenn's Whixall and Bettisfiled Mosses National Nature Reserve
Today I meet up with Shropshire nature enthusiast, Marc Petty, who has agreed very kindly to take me to Fenn's Whixall and Bettisfiled Mosses National Nature Reserve.
This a vast area, they say visible from space. I am keen to learn about peat bog. My limited knowledge is that of the old Pathe News Reel footage of men digging the peat for fire heaths.

This time-lapse video is a compilation of several days’ hard work by staff and volunteers at Thursley National Nature Reserve constructing the latest addition to the extensive boardwalk network during July and August. The new section will give a previously inaccessible view of the mire/bog habitat along with access to a new viewing platform for observation of aquatic life on a pond, a chance to watch dragonflies and damselflies, raft spiders and the plant species which thrive in this special habitat.
