Potala refers to a mountain in India sacred to the religion, and for centuries its namesake palace has been at the core of Tibet’s monastic community.
Much of the current palace complex dates to the seventeenth century. But the earliest construction began a thousand years earlier, on the commission of a Tibetan king, in honor of his marriage to a princess of China. The growing fortress became the winter home for the Dalai Lamas, monastic leaders of Tibetan Buddhism.
UNESCO’s World Heritage designation extends to the neighboring Jokhang Temple, considered Tibet’s most sacred, and the Norbulingka, once the Dalai Lama’s summer residence.
Conflict led to the exile of the Dalai Lama from China’s Tibetan Autonomous Region in 1959, and the grounds became a museum. But the Potala Palace remains a major Buddhist pilgrimage site. Many travel long distances by foot to pay their respects. Potala is divided into the Red Palace, which is for religious use, and an administrative White Palace.
Visitors to Potala have to go with a tour group, and obtain a special permit. Once in, you pass through hallways lit by butter lamps, and into public areas watched over by monks. In addition to the historic structures, the heritage site contains a vast collection of sacred texts and works of art. Withstanding the elements and political struggle, Potala Palace remains an embodiment of Tibetan culture.

Discovery Tibet 2018-2019_Welcome to Tibet China!
The Tibetan name for their land, Bod བོད་, means Tibet or Tibetan Plateau, although it originally meant the central region[citation needed] around Lhasa, now known in Tibetan as Ü. The Standard Tibetan pronunciation of Bod, [pʰøʔ˨˧˨], is transcribed Bhö in Tournadre Phonetic Transcription, Bö in the THL Simplified Phonetic Transcription and Poi in Tibetan pinyin. Some scholars believe the first written reference to Bod Tibet was the ancient Bautai people recorded in the Egyptian Greek works Periplus of the Erythraean Sea (1st century CE) and Geographia (Ptolemy, 2nd century CE), itself from the Sanskrit form Bhauṭṭa of the Indian geographical tradition.[1

The Yungbulakang palace (Tsetang - Tibet - China)
(EN) Yumbulagang (Tibetan: ཡུམ་བུ་བླ་སྒང་ also known as Yumbu Lakhang or Yungbulakang Palace) is an ancient palace in the Yarlung Valley, Nêdong County in the vicinity of Zêtang the seat of the prefectural administration of Lhoka (Pinyin: Shannan), in the South of Tibet Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China.
According to legend it was the first building in Tibet and the palace of the first Tibetan king, Nyatri Tsenpo. Yungbulakang stands on a hill on the eastern bank of the Yarlung River in the Yarlung Valley of southeast Naidong County, about 192 km southeast of Lhasa, and 9 km south of Tsetang. According to a legend of followers of the Bön religion, Yumbulagang was erected in the second century B.C. for the first Tibetan king Nyatri Tsenpo, descended from the sky. During the reign of the 28th king, Lha Thothori Nyantsen, in the fifth century, a golden Stupa, a jewel (and/or a form to the manufacture of dough-Stupas) and a Sutra that no one could read fell from the sky on the roof of Yumbulagang; a voice from the sky announced: in five generations one shall come, that understands its meaning! Later, Yumbulagang became the summer palace of the 33rd king Songtsen Gampo and princess Wencheng. After Songtsen Gampo had transferred his seat to Lhasa, Yumbulagang became a shrine and under the reign of the 5th Dalai Lama, Ngawang Lobsang Gyatso, a monastery of the Gelugpa school.
The Yumbulagang was heavily damaged and reduced to a single storey during the Cultural revolution but was reconstructed in 1983.

Shi Ga Tse (Tibet) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Shi Ga Tse in Tibet.
With its population of forty five thousand, the city of Shigatse is not only Tibet’s second largest city and administrative centre for the south of the country, it also boasts one of the most beautiful monastery districts in the Himalayas. The Tashilunpo Monastery, the ‘Mountain Of Blessing’, is situated at the western end of the city that lies at an altitude of three thousand nine hundred metres above sea level and is closely associated with the second most important spiritual heads of Tibet, the Panchen Lamas. The sight of the faithful who walk with their prayer mills around the monastery complex is quite an experience for most Westerners who come here and despite the severe political climate of the recent past the significance of Tashilunpo for the Tibetan people remains just as strong today as it has always been. Shigatse and the historic Tashilunpo Monastery will no doubt attract great hordes of pilgrims for many years to come.

Forum on the Development of Tibet opens in Lhasa
Back in the 6th century, residents of southwest China’s Sichuan and Yunnan provinces traded tea for horses with the people of Tibet Autonomous Region following a winding path through the mountains. The route is known as the Southern Silk Road, an integral part of modern-day China’s Belt and Road Initiative. At this year's Forum on the Development of Tibet, participants discussed the region's significant role in preserving Silk Road civilizations.
