Americans want to escape suburbs for city life
LEAD IN:
After 60 years of migrating to car-dominated suburbs, a larger share of Americans are choosing city neighbourhoods where jobs and stores are nearby.
But urban living doesn't come cheap.
STORYLINE:
This scenic lakeside cabin outside of Chattanooga, Tennessee, had it all for Spencer McCallie.
Except the location, far out of town.
Gosh, I would drive 45 minutes to get there and then 45 minutes back, he says.
McCallie is part of a growing group of Americans choosing cityscapes over cul-de-sacs.
Heather Gustafson from CMK Realty in Chicago is noticing the trend:
We're certainly finding that buyers want to be in walking distance to what cities have to offer, she says.
Both empty nesters and new families are driving the demand for urban living.
And that means higher prices.
Historically, Americans bought homes worth about three times their income.
But now the typical new home tops $320,000 - six times the average household income in the United States.
That's partly down to business decisions made by home builders, according to Josh Boak, Associated Press Economics Writer:
Developers have made a conscious choice to build fewer homes but charge higher prices in order to maintain their profit margins, he says.
That's led to developers breaking ground on terrace house developments like Basecamp River North in Chicago, where units start at half a million dollars.
Despite the price tag, there are people who think the benefits of urban living outweight the cost, says Heather Gustafson from CMK Realty in Chicago:
Shorter commutes to work. Greater accessibility to restaurants, shopping and to public transportation, she says.
A new poll by the American Planning Association says roughly forty per cent of the country still lives in suburbs, but just seven per cent of those surveyed hope to stay there.
That's because for decades communities were designed in ways many people no longer want to live, according to Josh Boak, AP Economics Writer:
The problem is we've had sixty years of suburban based construction that is focused on the car, so we have a mismatch in terms of what people want and between what the market is providing, he says.
Back in Tennessee, Spencer McCallie says adjusting to city life has been easy. Backyard strolls replaced by short trips to see local performances.
It was great fun. And then after that we left with six other people and then ate at one of our favourite restaurants and came home. Would not have done any of that had we lived the 28 miles out, he says.
It's all part of a dramatic shift towards downtown living.

Muslims Taking Over a Small Town in Tennessee
SHELBYVILLE, Tenn. - It has been nearly 20 years since Somalia last had a functioning government. Islamic jihadists now control most of the country-and sharia is the law of the land. Tens of thousands of Somali refugees have resettled in America in recent years to escape the chaos of their homeland, which is located in the Horn of Africa.
But the transition isn't going smoothly in one small town. At first glance, Shelbyville is your typical sleepy southern hamlet. It's nestled in middle Tennessee, where the walking horse is king. There's Main St., the local sheriff, a movie theatre. It's all very Mayberry, except for one big difference: the recent arrival of hundreds of Somali Muslims. Shelbyville is about an hour's drive from Nashville, in the heart of the Bible Belt. Like many Americans, the citizens of Shelbyville knew little about Somalia other than the 1993 Black Hawk Down incident, in which 18 U.S. servicemen were killed while battling warlords and Islamic jihadists in the Somali capital of Mogadishu. So when hundreds of Somalis began turning up in the town--many of them dressed in traditional Islamic garb--locals quickly took notice. They've had an impact here. Unfortunately, it's not been a good impact, said Brian Mosely, a reporter for the local Shelbyville Times-Gazette.
Mosely won an award from the Associated Press for a series of articles he wrote for the paper about Shelbyville's Somalis. I found that there was just an enormous culture clash going on here, he said. The Somalis were--according to a lot of the people I talked to here--were being very, very rude, inconsiderate, very demanding. Tthey would go into stores and haggle over prices. They would also demand to see a male salesperson, would not deal with women in stores Different People, Different Culture
Their culture is totally alien to anything the residents are used to, Mosely added. The problems extend to local schools--where some Somali students won't talk to female administrators. There have also been issues with local law enforcement. I'm not really sure whether that is because of experiences with the police in their country, or whether that's just the way their culture is, said Shelbyville's Police Chief, Austin Swing. Shelbyville is home to about 17,000 people. The town's Somali population is estimated to be between 400 and 1,000. Mosely says the Somalis have isolated themselves from the rest of the community. We're talking about people who have not had any experience with Western civilization, he explained. They don't know the language. Things like running water are a miracle to some of these folks...you don't take people from a totally alien culture, put them into a community, and then say 'alright, you must get along.' Abdirizak Hassan is the director of the Somali Community Center in nearby Nashville. He says the state of Tennessee has no programs to help immigrants integrate into their new surroundings. They come, and the only thing they can do is go to work, and then after work they go back to the apartment, Hassan said. They're totally isolated and there's no interaction between them and the locals. He added that some have even expressed a desire to return to Somalia. A lot of them face eviction. They put them in an apartment complex that costs $600 a month. They can't get a job that gives them that much money, Hassan explained. And sometimes you have families, like, a single mother with eight kids, or seven kids or six kids, and you expect her to go to work in six months time with no English, no driver's skills, nothing? I mean, sometimes it's impossible. The locals, mostly, when they see a few hundred people in their backyard with a different look, strangers, you know, of course they have the right to be concerned, he added. But I think if the local authorities and organizations like ours do a lot of outreach, I think we can bridge the gap. So how did so many Somalis end up in rural Shelbyville? The answer can be complicated. The State Department helps resettle refugees from war-torn countries like Somalia in the United States.

What New Marine Corps Recruits Go Through In Boot Camp
We got an inside look at the United States Marine Corps’ intense 13-week basic training program. Senior video correspondent Graham Flanagan spent five days at the Marine Corps Recruit Training Depot in Parris Island, South Carolina, where he observed different companies at various stages of training.
Recruits endure a series of intense physical challenges such as entering a gas chamber, rappelling down a 47-foot-tower, and fighting each other with “pugil sticks.” The Marine Corps is the only US military branch that separates male and female recruits during basic training. In a statement to Business Insider, a spokesperson from the Marine Corps Recruit Training Depot at Parris Island said, “The same gender platoon model allows for appropriate acclimation to the training environment, development of key relationships with drill instructors, and optimal focus during the beginning of their transformation.”
After weeks of extreme physical and psychological challenges, training culminates with “The Crucible,” a 54-hour event where recruits endure exhausting combat scenarios while running on minimal food and sleep.

Jade Helm 15: US military launches large-scale drill across seven states - TomoNews
BASTROP, TEXAS — Jade Helm 15, a routine military exercise that began on Wednesday, involves counter-insurgency, intelligence gathering and organizational training for more than a thousand U.S. Army special service personnel.
Spanning seven states in the United States, Jade Helm 15 will train 1,200 Army Green Berets, Navy Seals and Air Force special operations troops on how to adapt to unfamiliar terrain. According to the New York Times, soldiers will also learn how to blend into civilian populations during the exercises.
All of the exercises will be conducted in remote areas of the U.S. with low population densities that have access to more populous towns.
As part of the military exercises, Texas, Utah as well as part of California have been designated hostile territories, the status of Arizona and New Mexico remain uncertain, while the rest of California, Nevada and Colorado have been labeled friendly territories.

Tennessee requests to kill 10 inmates at once
Tennessee is seeking execution dates for 10 death row inmates.
It's an unprecedented move for a state that's executed only six inmates since 1960.
One official says they've never seen a state request 10 execution dates all at once.
The ten inmates include Leroy Hall, who set his ex-girlfriend on fire as she sat in her car in Hamilton County in 1991. She died after several hours.
Attorneys for the condemned men are asking a court to halt the executions over questions about the lethal injection drug the state plans to use. But the state says the 10 have already exhausted the normal appeals process.
And they've been sitting on death row for an average of nearly 30 years.
