Tobacco Road Miami Demolition Video - 1912-2014
Over the past 10 plus days, demolition has taken place on the 102 year old Tobacco Road. The demolition crew was Thunder Demolition with Group 3 Contractors.
The bar held the first liquor license in Miami and now debris from the building is all that remains on the site.
During the demolition, the team from Thunder Demolition was able to save the original Dade-County Pine from the building. Employees from Tobacco Road plan on using the original wood to make coasters, cutting boards and tables to preserve the history of the original location. General Manager Joel Rivera and employees still need to raise $50,000 and are doing this until December 2 through Kickstarter. They need any donations possible to help move into a new location across the lot.

1970: Lawton Chiles Walks Across Florida
Hey everybody, it's Pascua Florida Day! On April 2, 1513 Juan Ponce de León, having departed from Puerto Rico and sailed by the Bahamas, sighted an unfamiliar land mass and named it Pascua Florida, thus finding and naming the Sunshine State in one fell swoop.
In the 16th Century photo ops were limited to say the least, so we're sharing historic footage of a more contemporary Floridian, born on April 3, 1930 -- Lawton Chiles, who served in the Florida Legislature, represented Florida in the U.S. Senate for eighteen years, and was Governor of Florida from 1991 to 1998.
Chiles is really famous for walking more than one thousand miles across Florida during his 1970 Senate campaign. His ninety-one day walk transformed Chiles from little-known to well-known and garnered lots of free media coverage for his underfunded campaign. The candidate also got to speak to lots of ordinary people, taking the pulse of the state and finding out what was on everybody's mind.
We've put together a couple of WTVJ clips from the station's coverage of Chiles' campaign. First up: Reporter Fred Francis catches up with Chiles on his long walk. Francis' lead, describing the walking campaign as Lawton Chiles' bag, lets you know that this is the Seventies. In addition to walking and talking with Francis, Chiles talks to shoppers.
The second clip, aired on October 2, 1970, captures Chiles in Miami -- actually on the line between Miami and Coral Gables, at Southwest Eighth Street and Douglas Road, across the street from the Trail theater, thanking voters for their support. Chiles won a Senate seat about one month later.

42 Star Island, Miami Beach - Demolition of historic 1925 home
additional footage from the 42 Star Island demolition. The home was designed in 1925 by Florida's first registered architect, Walter DeGarmo. The new owners purchased the home in a foreclosure, and immediately requested to demolish the 8,000 square foot estate in order to build a new home of 20,000 square feet. The Miami Design Preservation League (MDPL) and residents throughout Miami Beach and outside fought to save the historical home - a landmark structure in a very visible location at the entrance to Miami Beach. Unfortunately, the City of Miami Beach did not follow the unanimous recommendation of its own Historic Preservation Board, and instead allowed for the demolition of the home to proceed. Demolition was completed in April 2014. This home has become a symbol of the loopholes in historic preservation laws which allow owners to demolish buildings that should be protected.

The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) is a collegiate athletic league in the United States. Founded in 1953 in Greensboro, North Carolina, the ACC sanctions competition in twenty-five sports in Division I of the NCAA for its twelve member universities: Boston College Eagles, Clemson Tigers, Duke Blue Devils, Florida State Seminoles, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, Miami Hurricanes, North Carolina Tar Heels, North Carolina State Wolfpack, Virginia Cavaliers, Virginia Tech Hokies, and Wake Forest Demon Deacons. In 2011, the conference announced it was adding Syracuse and Pittsburgh to expand to fourteen members beginning in the 2013 academic year. In 2012, the ACC announced it would add Notre Dame in all sports but football and hockey.

Mall terrorist attack threat: Somali Islamic group targets Mall of America
A video purportedly from Somali terrorist group al-Shabab has called for attacks on shopping malls in the UK, Canada and the United States, including the Mall of America in Minnesota.
Al-Shabab is responsible for the September 2013 attack on a shopping mall in Kenya, Nairobi that killed 67 people.
In the video, the masked terrorist called for attacks on the Mall of America in Minnesota, the West Edmonton Mall in Canada and the Westfield London mall in the UK.
According to its website, the Mall of America employs more than 100 security personnel, including K9 and plain clothes units. These security personnel are responsible for 96 acres of space spread over four floors and more than 520 stores, which are visited by 40 million people annually.
Security precautions include monthly lockdown drills, in which store operators are instructed to close their gates and take shelter. The Mall of America said it would increase security measures, but did not elaborate.
