Tokyo to Nikko Train Ride | First Impressions of Nikko, Japan
Come join us as we take a train ride from Tokyo to Nikko along with giving you our first impressions of Nikko, Japan. After spending a month in Tokyo we were more than ready to switch from big city living in Japan to a more rural setting. Having heard a lot about Nikko we were stoked to finally get an opportunity to visit. We ended up getting Nikko passes with a small upgrade for a direct train to Nikko. This meant we didn't have to transfer trains. For lunch we tried our first Bento box in Japan which is also considered classic Japanese train food. Upon arriving we give you a small Nikko hotel room tour along with a quick wander around town showing you residential areas, rivers, mountains and a Japanese cemetery. Overall, our first impressions of Nikko, Japan are favorable and we can't wait to explore more in the next episode.

Tokyo to Nikko Train Ride | First Impressions of Nikko, Japan Travel Video Transcript:
We are coming to you looking all greasy and sweaty from Burger King. Yeah. Just outside Asakusa Train Station (xxx). It is a travel day. It sure is. It is an early start. We checked out of capsule hotel today yeah in Shin Okubo and we are traveling up to Nikko. We are going to be spending four days enjoying a bit of nature. Yes. Rivers. Streams. Escaping the big city of Tokyo.
we're going to be in the region for that long and basically that includes transportation from Tokyo to Nikko and well transportation on the slowest of the trains which we've already missed but it is a good thing because you have to like transfer a whole bunch of times. Yeah, something like three times. Yeah, two or three times.
So we had to pay a little upgrade but it doesn't matter because the pass gives us access to a whole bunch of activities once we get to Nikko. Like they have boat cruises on the Lake. Yeah. And like cable ways or rope ways. We'll be showing you guys all of the that in a future video.
Let me tell you the price for the pass. So it was 4,520 Yen. Yeah. Per person.
So about $40 US dollars. That is a pretty good deal especially if we utilize. I think if we utilize it well. And I think we will. We will.
I really want to cover Nikko well. Yeah. We are going there to do stuff.
That is so true and we actually haven't had a Bento Box since we've been in Japan for about a month and a half now. And pumped to have our first one. They had a few different ones to choose from. This looks like beef. I'm getting a beef one.
I think it has egg and I think it might have rice. So let's give it a try.
We made it. That was a really great journey. So scenic. It was so scenic we both fell asleep. Yes. You know what the coolest thing for me was? Like I feel asleep as it was starting to get rural just outside of Tokyo. Uh huh. But then when I woke up like I looked out and there was like these lush green rice paddies. Yeah. And then it turned into forest. Yes. Just before we got to Nikko.
Well we had a little nap, a little bite. How are we feeling? We sure did. We're going for a walk. It has finally cooled down enough that it is pleasant being outside. Yeah. And there is like a trail up the mountain. Is that like a cemetery? Seriously. That looks really neat. Let's go. Let's go.
Our hunch has been confirmed. It is a cemetery. It is. Right by the river. Right by the river.
At the foot of the mountains. Next to a forest.
Alright guys. So we are going to wrap up this video. It has been a long day. It has but it has been a very fun day. And just having that walk tonight going for a walk for an hour has really set the tone the excitement levels for tomorrow.
Sam is super pumped for Nikko. I'm so pumped to be here. It is so scenic here. And this town is so chill. Things have basically shutdown by 6:30 or 7 PM. Yes.
The town is barely functioning just a few businesses open and it was just cool to walk around. We waked through residential areas, we walked along the river and yeah I can't wait to properly explore Nikko tomorrow. Bye.
This is part of our Travel in Japan video series showcasing Japanese food, Japanese culture and Japanese cuisine.

Nikko, Japan | Things to do on your Tokyo Sidetrip to Nikko (Travel Guide)
Nikko is one of the more beautiful places we have visited in Japan. Famous for its heritage sites and breathtaking mountains, it is also known for the many onsens built around the hot springs that dot the area.
About a 2-hour train ride from Tokyo, Nikko is the perfect destination for travelers who want to see a more rural side of Japan.

First Things First
We stayed at the Tobu Hotel Lavant Tokyo for a day before heading to Nikko.
The nicest part was waking up to an unobstructed view of the Tokyo Skytree which was pretty awesome.
The breakfast buffet was nice, with choices between Western and Japanese.
Visit the Skytree
Since it was so near, we went to check out the Tokyo Skytree, one of the city’s most iconic landmarks and tourist attractions. Reaching up to 634 metres (2,080 ft), the Skytree is the second tallest man-made structure in the world after the Burj Khalifa.
The tower is connected to Skytree Mall with shops and restaurants you can visit before heading up the tower.
There are two observatories, one at 350 m (1,150 ft) and the other at 450 m (1,480 ft). A glass covered skywalk, which gives visitors the most stunning view of Tokyo, encompasses a spiral walkway.
The best time to visit is right before sunset. You can watch the streets below come to life in a symphony of lights that is absolutely breathtaking.
Welcome to Nikko
The best way to get to Nikko is via train, which you can catch from Asakusa Station. The trip is around 2 hours.
If you want a bit of privacy, opt for a cabin. You can take in the rural scenery while making chitchat with your companions.
The Tobu Railway, which is the primary line in Nikko, stops at various destinations throughout the region.
Nikko is a rather large mountainous locality approximately 140 km north of Tokyo. Two large rivers pass directly through the city proper, and there are a number of falls and hot springs in the area.
Nikko is mostly known for its onsens that have been built around the various hot springs. Nature attractions and world heritage sites are also major draws for tourists.
The Japanese visit Nikko during holidays and weekends, especially during winter when the hot springs can be best enjoyed.
Toby World Square
When visiting Nikko, we recommend stopping by the Tobu World Square.
It’s a miniatures theme park with replications of various world landmarks and heritage sites. There is a close to ‘It’s a Small World After All’ feel about the park but without that dreaded theme song.
The miniatures are extremely detailed, and they look amazing! The trees are actual banzi’s that bring the installations to life.
There are a handful of restaurants at the park. We opted for the Japanese restaurant.
A delicious hot bowl of soba noodles to counter the chilling weather outside was the way to go plus a shot of hot sakê, of course.
Edo Wonderland
Probably the best part of our short stay in Nikko, Edo Wonderland is a breathing, living, Edo period village that gives guests the chance to experience life during the heyday of Shoguns and Samurai.
There are a number of activities and attractions to see, but the coolest thing is being able to rent Kimono’s to wear around the park. Prices vary depending on the class and style of the kimono, for instance, a Shogun’s Kimino will cost more than that of a Samurai or Commoner. The staff also address and respond to you based on your attire, which helps you immerse in the experience.
Me failing horribly at trying to play the Shamisen, a traditional Japanese 3-string instrument.
Kamakura Snow Festival
From December to March, Nikko receives snowfall. What takes place during this time of the year is a local festival known as the Yunishigawa Kamakura Festivial where many of the establishments use the freshly fallen snow to build Kamakura. This is a type of igloo or snow house where guests can hangout, take pictures and even enjoy local snacks.
Make sure you visit the festival during day time. The various shops and cafes are closed in the evening.
Time to Relax
Nikko is most famous for its mountainside onsens and spas. There are a number of hotels in the area which cater to visitors who come to Nikko to experience the hot springs during winter.
We checked in to Hana To Hana, one of the better known onsens in the area. The staff were all friendly; and the food, exceptional even by Japanese standards.
The rooms are traditional Japanese style. Ours had a fantastic view of the river from the window.
There are two onsens in the hotel—a stone one which, unfortunately, we were unable to shoot due to guest and hotel regulations and another smaller wood-style one (pictured above), which they were kind enough to let us take a picture of.
Breakfast and dinner are included with your stay at Hana To Hana which is a plus. To be honest, the Yakiniku style dinner was the best meal we’ve ever had in Japan.

2019 Edo Wonderland
Nikko Edo Wonderland (Edomura)
Visited here on 4/21/2019 with Japan friends and family. We had an awesome time. There were no crowds and we spent the whole day there. We had curry and rice for lunch, the kids got to participate in a ninja training program, and our friends dog Mahalo got to come with us too. Nikko is only about one hour away from my in-law's home in Utsunomiya so it was an easy drive.
Additional Info
Edo Wonderland is basically a theme park showcasing the Japanese Edo period (1603-1868). The settings are beautiful and each of the buildings are either shops or some type of theme setup. There are shows and interactive experiences. There's even a place to rent traditional kimonos so you can wear them around the park, taking your experience to another level. Attention to details have not been left out as some of the areas are used in Japanese film making to this day.
Winter in Nikko, Tochigi
Weekend getaway to Nikko, Tochigi - somewhere 2 hours train ride from Asakusa. Tokyo prefecture.
The trip was planned a week ahead but I have got my accommodation booked two weeks ahead, without really knowing what I could do in the two days.
It all started by boarding the second scheduled train from Tobu-Asakusa station. Had to get up really early to catch a train from Kamata (where I stayed). Got my quick on the go breakfast from konbini, and arrived 30 minutes early prior to departure. Since Tobu-Asakusa station is just next to the Sensoji temple - quickly ran to the other street and able to catch the view of Nakamise street without any crowds.
Took a upgraded train ticket with reserved seating for another 1100 yen so that I could have extra an hour to spend in Nikko itself - worth it I guess. After two hours of smooth ride on the latest Revaty Kegon train, there I am in Tochigi - Nikko. First impression - it is so cold and freezing already. Whipped out gloves and beanie straight way. Second impression - where is everyone. It is literary almost empty and only a few shops are opened. Anywhere 10 minutes from the train station are closed. Went to Kegon Falls and there is only me in the facility - private waterfall?
It is relatively easy to move around in Nikko as their bus lines are pretty much straightforward - unlike Fuji where you have different colours of bus heading to different locations. With the 4 days pass that includes return train ticket back to Asakusa, I can have unlimited bus ride in Nikko as well.
Got my first snow-hike-walk in Senjōgahara - basically a large flat land before a mountain. With the lack of people around and white wash landscape - it gives you this sense of serenity and calm in some way. Of course, they do encourage one to have a bell just in case of bear attacks. I don't have one obviously because, I never know there will be wild bears around. Day 1 ends with half frozen Lake Yuno.
Didn't try any of the shrine because it has become too tourist and it has been renovated so well that it doesn't retained its value anymore aye?
Started Day 2 late and with the extra 1 hour journey to Ryokyu Canyon. It is a forgotten place, even in most travel web that promotes Nikko - because it is really far and it is not covered in the Nikko Pass. The river wasn't that filled hence the view didn't turn out as magnificent as I would thought.
Hopped into the bus and get myself back to Lake Chuzenji again because weather was showing it is snowing up there and in fact it is. After half an hour of that, headed back to Tobu-Nikko station and back to Asakusa.
Nature-driven Places of Highlight in Nikko:
1. Kegon Falls
2. Lake Chūzen-ji
3. Senjogahara Marshland
4. Yumoto Foot Onsen
5. Lake Yuno
6. Ryokyu Canyon
7. Akechidaira Ropeway
8. Kamangafughi Abyss
9. Shinkyo Bridge

June 26, 2008. Nikko - Japan - Daiya River - Shinkyo bridge. Ver 1.[1080p HD]
April 17, 2009.
From Tokyo to Nikko Tobu Railway route departing from Asakusa Station is the quickest and the most popular.
Red-lacquered wooden bridge arches over the Daiya River where by legend Shodo Shonin crossed the river on the backs of two huge serpants. The original, built in 1636 for the exclusive use of the shogun and imperial messengers, was destroyed by flood. This current bridge dates from 1907.

Tobu Railway Asakusa Station (東武 浅草駅), Asakusa, Tokyo Metropolis, Japan
Tobu Asakusa Station (東武 浅草駅) is the flagship station for Tobu Railways in Tokyo, Japan. This station brings tourists and other travelers to Asakusa, which is the destination for the world famous Sensoji Temple and the newly opened Tokyo Sky Tree (tallest man made tower in the world). See my video of Tokyo Sky Tree.
Also, Tobu Railways runs trains from Asakusa to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Nikko Temples and Shrines. The buses and the routes inside Nikko and other Tochigi prefecture based hot spas are all owned by Tobu Railways. Tobu railways also owns Tobu World Square, a theme park which contains miniature buildings all world's important destinations (for ex: Eiffel Tower in Paris).
Enjoy!!!
P.J.D to NIKKO, TOCHIGI PREFECTURE
Hasil video sebab stress buat assignment. Btw we went to Nikko a week before Xmas week. The expenses as below:
Nikko All Pass: 4,125 yen
Accomodation: 10,500 yen (3 beds/per night)
Total entrance fees: 1,850 yen
Kepada yang plan nak pergi outside Tokyo, Nikko lah antara tempatnya. Very nature-side. I think Japan Tourism started to make Nikko more Muslim friendly. Train station sana ada sediakan tempat solat (office hour only) and ada Muslim-friendly restaurant, one of it Asian Garden betul2 depan train station. Harga mahal sikit tapi sedap and owner friendly. Thumbs up! 2 days 1 night is enough saya rasa.
Nikko All Pass ialah pass ke mana sahaja menggunakan bas di sana. No need to spend on transportation dah. Pass ada dua jenis; Nikko All Pass dan Nikko World Heritage. Pass boleh dapat di Asakusa station atau kalau orang Malaysia rasanya klook apps ada jual.
Experience Nikko! (Japan's World Heritage Site)
According to Nikko's Government site, the shrines and temples of Nikko has been declared and registered as a World Heritage site at the 23rd session of the World Heritage Committee held at Marrakesh in Morocco last December 1999. Hence, I recommend you to see this beaut first-hand and experience the magical sites preserved and developed by the Japanese people.
Nikko trip
Nikko (日光, Nikkō) is a town at the entrance to Nikko National Park, most famous for Toshogu, Japan's most lavishly decorated shrine and the mausoleum of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate.
Nikko had been a center of Shinto and Buddhist mountain worship for many centuries before Toshogu was built in the 1600s, and Nikko National Park continues to offer scenic, mountainous landscapes, lakes, waterfalls, hot springs, wild monkeys and hiking trails.
Nikko and the Okunikko area around Lake Chuzenji, in particular, are well known for their beautiful autumn colors (koyo). In the average year the colors start descending from the higher elevations of Yumoto Onsen in early October, are best around Lake Chuzenji and the Irohazaka road in mid to late October and reach the town of Nikko in the first half of November.
Nikko is located along Japan's Romantic Road.
