Tofukuji is a Zen Buddhist temple of the Renzai sect, which dates back to 1236.The Tsutenkyo Bridge and Kaisando Hall require an entrance fee, but this is well worth it, especially in the fall, as people travel from all over the world to see the maples leaves and fall colors.
The temple grounds are expansive and much of it can be explored without having to pay anything.
The Sanmon Gate, for example, is considered a National Treasure, as it’s the oldest Zen Sanmon Gate in Japan. It dates back to the construction of the original temple in 1236, but it burned down three separate times in the 14th century. In 1425, it was reconstructed yet again, and although it underwent some restoration work in the 1970s, the structure you see today is essentially the same one from roughly 600 years ago.

Tofukuji Zen Temple, Kyoto City, Japan
Tofukuji is also called Enichizan and is the head temple of Tofukuji Branch of the Rinzai sect of Zen Buddhism.
This temple is located on the southern border of the Kyoto city and is one train stop away from the JR Kyoto station on the JR Nara Line. You can also walk there from JR Kyoto Station on a sunny day.
This temple is known as one of the five great temples of Kyoto (Kyoto Gozan) and one of the largest Zen temples in Japan. This temple is specially known for autumn foliage viewing and during the peak period of autumn foliage it is practically impossible to get into the temple.
Story has it that it got it's name of Tofukuji by combining the names of two great temples of Nara called Todaiji and Kofukuji.
Enjoy!!!
Tōfuku-ji temple and gardens, Kyoto, Japan travel video
The Tofuku-ji Buddhist temple in Kyoto, Japan is considered one of the five great Zen temples of Kyoto. Originally built in the year 1236 it burned down after a couple of centuries and then was rebuilt in the 15th century to the original plans and stands today as a fine example of a medieval Zen temple.
Typical of most Kyoto temples, it is a group of more than a dozen wooden structures in a lush garden setting, especially famous for the very large Sanmon temple gate, 65 feet high, and the bright fall colors of maple leaves when you're here in the autumn season.
Here too we have a small Shinto shrine area with another torii tunnel leading up to a staircase that brings you up the hill.
At this temple complex of Tofuku-ji there are about a dozen sub-temples.
One of the things that most noted for is the fall color. We arrived in early December but still there was the lingering color of the maple leaves which were really bright and spectacular.

Kyoto, Japan, Temple Gardens: Fushimi-Inari-Taisha, Tofuku-ji, Maruyama Park
Kyoto is Japan’s majestic city of ancient temples, serene gardens and superb cultural treasures. Your most enjoyable activity will probably be strolling through artistically designed garden landscapes with their winding paths, tranquil ponds, stately trees, lush vegetation and traditional wooden temples, including Fushimi-Inari-Taisha, Tofuku-ji and Maruyama Park.
The sublime gardens unfold as you walk along paths that lead through changing vistas around each bend, where you can stop frequently to absorb each new perspective looking left, right, up and down. The different views are enhanced by small statues, foot-bridges, bamboo railings, temple back-drops and glimpses of distant mountains, all exquisitely arranged to be appreciated in moments of reflection.
Kyoto was ranked as the number one visitor destination in the world by the readers of Travel and Leisure magazine for two years in a row in 2014 and 2015, quite an honor.
More than 50 million visitors come to Kyoto each year, most of them are just staying for the day then moving on, but about 1 million of them do spend the night in a local hotel -- there are lots of accommodations of all price ranges -- and most of the visitors are Asian. No doubt with the growth of Chinese travel these numbers are going to continue increasing.
These crowds of visitors could very much interfere with your appreciation of Kyoto’s heavenly gardens. So, try to visit during the less-busy late fall or early spring in order to properly experience the tranquil garden atmosphere.

Kyoto's autumn leaves (kōyō) are some of the most famous in the country, and one of the most popular places to view the changing colors is at Tōfuku-ji temple. One of the city's Five Great Zen Temples, Tōfuku-ji was founded in 1236 and is home to a famous series of gardens and one of the oldest Sanmon Gates in Japan. When it comes to seasonal delights, however, go to Tōfuku-ji for their gorgeous mini-valley filled with maple trees. The Tsūten-kyō Bridge crosses over this rich sea of colors, allowing visitors to feel as if they are floating on a sea of red autumn leaves.

Kyoto, Tofukuji Temple Walking - Large Zentemple, Feeling Quiet and Calm [4K] POV
Tofukuji Temple is in the south-east Kyoto, next to JR Kyoto station. It was built in 1236 on the instructions of Kujo Michiie, the great statesman of the Kamakura period. Main gate, Sanmon is the National Treasure.
It is famous of a large number of Japanese maple trees, and is most crowded during the autumn season when people flock to see the autumn foliage. It is a tradition to view the leaves from the Tsūten-kyō bridge.
However there are few people in seasons except autumn so we can appreciate quiet calm atmosphere and magnificent green Japanese maple trees.

Kyoto
Kyoto, officially Kyoto City, is the capital city of Kyoto Prefecture in Japan. Located in the Kansai region on the island of Honshu, Kyoto forms a part of the Keihanshin metropolitan area along with Osaka and Kobe. As of 2018, the city had a population of 1.47 million.
In 794, Kyoto (then known as Heian-kyō) was chosen as the new seat of Japan's imperial court. The Emperors of Japan ruled from Kyoto in the following eleven centuries until 1869, when the court relocated to Tokyo. The city was devastated during the Ōnin War in the 15th century and went into an extended period of decline, but gradually revived under the Tokugawa shogunate (1600–1868) and flourished as a major city in Japan. The modern municipality of Kyoto was established in 1889. The city was spared from large-scale destruction during World War II and as a result, its prewar cultural heritage has mostly been preserved.
Kyoto is considered the cultural capital of Japan and a major tourist destination. It is home to numerous Buddhist temples, Shinto shrines, palaces and gardens, many of which are listed collectively by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Prominent landmarks include the Kyoto Imperial Palace, Kiyomizu-dera, Kinkaku-ji, Ginkaku-ji and the Katsura Imperial Villa. Kyoto is also a center of higher learning, with Kyoto University being an institution of international renown.

Tōfuku-ji
Tōfuku-ji (東福寺) is a Buddhist temple in Higashiyama-ku in Kyoto, Japan. Tōfuku-ji takes its name from two temples in Nara, Tōdai-ji and Kōfuku-ji.[1] It is one of the so-called Kyoto Gozan or five great Zen temples of Kyoto. Its honorary sangō prefix is Enichi-san (慧日山).
Tōfuku-ji was founded in 1236 by the imperial chancellor Kujō Michiie.[2] He appointed the monk Enni as founding priest, who had studied Rinzai Zen Buddhism in China under the monk Wuzhun Shifan. The temple was burned but rebuilt in the 15th century according to original plans. Tofuku-ji was one of the five temples of the Five Mountain System.
