To-ji - Kyoto - Letters from Japan
The Temple was originally one of two guardian temples that were built on the east and west sides of the main entrance to Kyoto when it was the capital of Japan. This was during the Hein Period, just about 12-hundred years ago. The west temple no longer exists, but Toji, which literally translates to “east temple” survived and is now a designated UNESCO World Heritage site.
Toji Temple is located southwest of Kyoto Station — just one stop on the Kintetsu Line. From Toji station, it’s about a ten minute walk. Alternatively, you could exit the south entrance of Kyoto station and walk south to the temple grounds. Either way, keep in mind that you’ll want to enter through the north entrance, as the south entrance does not offer access to the main halls and gardens. The entrance fee for adults is 500 yen.

Toji Temple Flea Market in Kyoto 7/21/2018 [4K]. Walk to and through the Toji Temple grounds while there is the Flea Market going on. It is a very hot day. We felt bad for some of the vendors who's tents seemed hotter from the concrete and gravel on the ground. I think it was 100 degrees Fahrenheit (37.8 degrees Celsius). Resting and staying hydrated was a must! Enjoy the walk from the comfort of your home!
Tallest Wooden Pagoda in Japan - Toji (東寺)Temple, Kyoto City
This five storied Pagoda, which is located inside Toji (東寺)Temple grounds, Kyoto City, Japan, is considered a national treasure and is built during Edo period.
The five-storied pagoda is so famous that it reminds all Japanese of Kyoto and Toji. It is the highest pagoda in Japan, measuring 187 feet. It was built by Kobo-daishi in 826 and burned down four times after being struck by lightning. The present pagoda was built by the third Tokugawa Shogun Iemitsu in 1644. Appropriate anti lightning measures are taken to preserve the structure.
Inside are placed the images of Four Buddhas and their followers, the eight great Bosatsu. Sometimes visitors are allowed into this first floor to see these statues.
During the night, the pagoda is illuminated with powerful lights and it is a beautiful sight to watch.
Antiques Market at Toji Temple, Kyoto City
Some of the Temples and Shrines in Japan are known to hold antiques and flea markets on their grounds once or twice every month, usually on Sundays.
The antiques market that is held on first Sunday of every month at Toji Temple in Kyoto City is one such famous markets. In fact I was told that New York Times Travel Section once did a story on this market. Some of the foreign tourists visiting this market also told me that they came specifically to see this market and that if you know your antiques, you can find some great bargains here.
If you are not into antiques, you can walk around and check out the Toji Temple Pagoda and the associated buildings. Toji Temple Pagoda is the tallest wooden pagoda in Japan. Check out my video about this in my channel if you get a chance.
This video is my walk through of the Toji Temple Antiques market and some portion of the many antiques shops on this particular day. Enjoy!!!
