Kozen-ji Temple (Kiso Valley) - Nagano - 興禅寺 - 4K Ultra HD
Established in 1434 by the 12th Kiso lord Nobumichi, Kōzen-ji (Kozen-ji) Temple, also known as Kozenji, is a Rinzai buddhist Myoshinji temple of the Kiso and Yamakura clans. Small in size, this temple comes with many little wonders in the form of four different gardens with the Syoryu Garden, Shyumisen Garden, Mansho Garden and Kanuntei Garden (cloud view garden), which is a beautiful dry landscape garden where the lines represent the clouds and where the rocks represent the mountains.

Shizuoka Tsumekizaki Park - 爪木崎公園 - 4K Ultra HD : Located between Shirahama beach and Dogashima, Tsumekizaki is a gorgeous seaside park that has several great walking paths, an incredibly diverse garden and an old lighthouse with a stunning view of the surrounding ocean.
Somehow more difficult to access than any other place, Tsumekizaki Park is still the ideal place to go for anyone who’s interested in chilling out by the sea as well as getting the chance to enjoy some of Izu’s most beautiful beaches.

Tsumago Juku (Kiso Valley) - Nagano - 妻籠宿 - 4K Ultra HD
Like Narai-Juku, Tsumago is yet another famous post town alongside the Nakasendo Highway section of the Kiso Valley during the Edo period that linked Kyoto to Edo, known now as… Tokyo.
Unlike Narai-Juku however, Tsumago-Juku is one of the best preserved post towns in Japan and its residents have gone to great lengths to protect and recreate the ambiance of this ancient post town that was once the pride of all during the Edo Period.
To help step back in time, cars are not allowed on the main street from 10am to 4pm and most, if not all. electric cables and other wires are concealed as much as possible.
Another noteworthy aspect of Tsumago-Juku is the presence of both the Honjin and Wakihonjin, where the Honjin served as a tavern or hotel for government officials while the Wakihonjin catered to the more regular travelers.

Nezame-no-toko (Kiso Valley) - Nagano - 寝覚の床 - 4K Ultra HD
Nagano Nezame-no-toko (Kiso Valley) - 寝覚の床 - 4K Ultra HD : As a result of centuries of erosion cutting the granite bedrock it is only recently, and after the flow of the river had been lowered due to hydropower construction, that the gorgeous Nezame No Toko scenery was unveiled to us all!
Located near the Agemmatsu village, Nezame No Toko is today a nationally designated scenic sport and indeed offers a stunning view of giant granite boulders eroded in a surprisingly “cubic” fashion that only mother nature could accomplish.. Surrounded by beautiful emerald green colored waters, Nezame No Toko offers on its main “island” the chance, for the most adventurous, to discover a little temple dedicated to the river god.

Off The Beaten Path Japan | Tottori, Shimane, Yamaguchi | Japan vlog part 1
Welcome to my new series “Off The Beaten Path Japan”, where I vlog the unusual locations that I visited during my 2019 Japan trip. Part 1 covers three prefectures often overlooked by tourists; Tottori, Shimane, and Yamaguchi, in the central Chugoku region of Japan.
Saitama Kawagoe Kitain Temple -喜多院 - 4K Ultra HD
Saitama Kawagoe Kitain Temple -喜多院 - 4K Ultra HD : Head temple of the Tendai Sect in the Kanto region, Kitain Temple was originally part of a three-temple complex built in 830 and slowly became the Tendai Sect’s main temple around the 17th Century. This took place under the influence of Tenkai, a Japanese Buddhist monk, also known as Nankōbō Tenkai (南光坊 天海), who developed a deep and trusted relationship with the first 3 shoguns of the Edo period.
Heavily damaged by fire in 1638, Kitain Temple has been saved by the Shogun Iemitsu, who ordered the removal of several palace buildings from the Edo Castle (Tokyo) to Kawagoe. This move ended up saving them, without knowing it, from the great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 and the destruction during WWII. This makes Kitain today one of the only places in Japan where you can visit surviving buildings from Edo Castle.
Finally, and located just in front of Kitain’s main hall, you will find a very unusual garden made of 540 stones statues : Gohyaku Rakan. Each stone represents a disciple of Buddha and comes with its own unique facial expression.

Chiba Hiratsuka terraced rice field - 棚田 - 4K Ultra HD : Located in Kamogawa City in Chiba prefecture, and barely one and a half hours away from the center of Tokyo by car, Hitratsuka is the closest terraced rice field to Tokyo, and also the only one of its kind in Japan!

Yamanashi Aokigahara Jukai - 青木ヶ原 - 4K Ultra HD
Yamanashi Aokigahara Jukai - 青木ヶ原 - 4K Ultra HD : Located at the foot of Fujisan (Mt. Fuji) the Aokigahara Jukai is a magnificent forest with an unfortunate dark side. Because of its imposing size (35 square kilometers) and its many rocky and icy caverns, many people come here to commit suicide every year.
Despite this downside, Aokigahara Jukai, when you follow one of its many official trails, offers some stunning views of of trees and lava rocks covered by moss that have been left untouched for centuries. There are also many caves in the area and some are open for tourists to explore. Dense, difficult to penetrate and somewhat “mystical”, Aokigahara Jukai is yet another place to go if you ever have the chance to visit Japan one day.

New Years Eve in Shibuya Crossing! Japan Trip Episode 1 - Yokohama and Tokyo
For our annual end of the year trip, Shawn and I traveled through Japan for 23 days. We bought the JR Rail Pass, first class tickets so we could take the bullet trains all over the country in comfort. It wasn't cheap, but it was very convenient and nice to not have to pay for each individual trip.
We landed in Haneda Airport and took the train to the Yokohama Station right near our hotel for two nights. We ate at my favorite places in Yokohama, Wako Tonkatsu and Yoshimuraya Ramen. We also went to the Cupnoodles museum which was just ok. We met up with my friend Beverly and she showed us around Chinatown and had some Chinese food for dinner.
Next we took the train to Tokyo and stayed for three nights. We went to the digital art museum, met up with my friends Suki and Hiro, also Shawn's friend Gisele, we all went to the Asakusa Temple, Ueno, and Shinjuku. For New Years Eve Shawn and I met up with some of his friends at Shibuya Crossing to celebrate the New Year.
It was a very busy first five nights in Japan, but so much more to come.

Walking in Hagi City Japan 萩市散歩 - Walk to Castle Ruins in Yamaguchi Prefecture
I'm trying to get to the castle ruins in scorching heat (Vancouver people are very sensitive to warm weather).
Some people probably don't know but Hagi city in Yamaguchi has quite a bit of sightseeing...

Words at War: Combined Operations / They Call It Pacific / The Last Days of Sevastopol
The Siege of Sevastopol took place on the Eastern Front of the Second World War. The campaign was fought by the Axis powers of Germany, Romania and Italy against the Soviet Union for control of Sevastopol, a port in Crimea on the Black Sea. On 22 June 1941 the Axis invaded the Soviet Union under Operation Barbarossa. The Axis land forces reached Crimea in the autumn, 1941, and overran the area. The only objective not in Axis hands was Sevastopol. Several attempts were made to secure the city in October and November 1941. A major attack was planned for late November, but bad weather and heavy rains delayed the Axis attack until 17 December 1941. Under the command of Erich von Manstein, the Axis forces were unable to capture Sevastopol in the first stage of operations. The Soviets launched an amphibious landing on the Crimean peninsula at Kerch in December 1941, to relieve the siege and force the Axis to divert forces to defend their gains. The operation saved Sevastopol for the time being, but the landing was checked and repulsed in May 1942.
At Sevastopol the Axis opted to conduct a siege until the summer, 1942, at which point they attacked the encircled Soviet forces by land, sea and air. On 2 June 1942, the Axis began their operation, codenamed Störfang (Sturgeon Catch). The Soviet Red Army and Black Sea Fleet held out for weeks under intense Axis bombardment. The German Air Force (Luftwaffe) played a vital part in the siege. The Luftwaffe made up for a shortage of Axis artillery, providing highly effective aerial bombardment in support of the ground forces. Finally, on the 4 July 1942, the remaining Soviet forces surrendered and the Axis seized the port. Both sides had suffered considerable losses during the siege.
With the Soviet forces neutralised, the Axis refocused their attention on the major summer campaign of that year, Operation Blue and the advance to the Caucasus oil fields.
