Deep Creek waterfalls loop - Great Smoky Mountains National Park, NC
The first of 6 hikes I did during the 3-day MLK weekend. Since I had a long drive out to the mountains, I chose this short hike to 3 waterfalls near the Deep Creek Campground on the North Carolina side of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Following the Deep Creek Trail along the namesake creek I first passed by Tom Branch Falls falling directly into Deep Creek. Then I continued on the trail along Deep Creek before looping back around over Sunkota Ridge to see Indian Creek Falls. Just before returning to the campground there is a short but steep loop to Juney Whank Falls. This is a nice creek and waterfall outing that doesn't require too much effort.
Hike was 5.2 miles with 740 feet elevation gain in 2 hours and 10 minutes.

Description
Tom Branch Falls
Starting back at the main trailhead, walk just 1,000 feet along the wide, flat Deep Creek trail to Tom Branch Falls, a wispy waterfall that gently splashes over 80 feet into Deep Creek. A bench is provided beside the creek and is a great place to sit and watch the inner-tubers float by.

Waterfalls in the North Carolina Smoky Mountains at Bryson City
A walk or drive beside any mountain stream will lead you by hundreds of tumbling cascades as the waters rush down from the peaks of the Smokies. But the high falls are the most spectacular, and Swain County offers some of the best in the Smokies, including Deep Creek’s trio of waterfalls – Juney Whank, Tom Branch and Indian Creek Falls.

The Big Ivy, Coleman Boundary area is located on the Appalachian Ranger District near Barnardsville, NC. Ivy is the local name for the mountain laurel shrub. This area is beautiful, remote, mountain land with more than 30 miles of trails that you can hike, bike and ride horses.
Big Ivy, long known by locals as Coleman Boundary, is a section of Pisgah National Forest below the Blue Ridge Parkway as it runs across the ridges of the Great Craggy Mountains to the east.
While the valley floor is around 2500 ft elevation, peaks in the range top out at over 6000 ft, making for a difference in elevation of over half a mile. This contributes to the variety of ecosystems found here, and the resultant rich, invigorating forest cloaks miles of trails.
The Big Ivy area is so unique it was - along with the Black Mountains just to the northeast - considered for National Park protection back in the 1930's along with the Great Smoky Mountains (which ultimately received that high status).
The main road, FS 74, has remnant CCC structures along its length and was probably built (or improved) in the first half of the 20th century. The Laurel Gap trail was created as a logging road during a spate of logging activity in the late 80's, making it one of the newer roads in the area.
The Elk Pen trail was created for the movie The Last of the Mohicans, and used in the opening scene. Filmmakers from 2012's The Hunger Games reportedly shot pre-Games scenes of Gale and Katniss in the Big Ivy area as well.
Buckeye Falls Winter Hike
Our next journey lead us to the enduring Buckeye Falls. The first time that I've seen it frozen and also the first time I've ever seen the inside of my knee. Please be careful if you're going to make the trek out there!
Enjoy yourself!!

Spruce Flats Falls: An Early Spring Hike
Spruce Flats Falls is a multi-level cascade which drops a total of 125 feet. This beautiful waterfall is reached by a 1.9-mile moderate hike, one which becomes progressively narrow, rocky and steep along the way. Viewing the falls at the end of the trail is a worthy reward, and on this overcast spring day, we were delighted to see wildflowers in bloom or just ready to burst, including star chickweed, yellow trillium, hepatica, trailing arbutus, rue-anemone, bloodroot, toothwort, pennywort, stonecrop and violets of purple and yellow varieties. Listen to the quiet of the forest and the power of the waterfall in this short video. NC Mountains in Winter.wmv
Get your coat and hat for this journey. A snowy Southern NC Mountain winter is most beautiful just after the snow stops falling. That's when a still peacefulness fills the cold air. Very nice indeed. This film was shot and edited by Chris Cassels of Casablanca Digital Media, Asheville, NC.
