Lăng Vua Khải Định - Tomb of King Khai Dinh - Thua Thien Hue Vietnam

Top 5 Things to do in Hue, Vietnam
Hue is a small town in Vietnam full of rich culture and history. We spent 5 days exploring former royal palaces in the imperial citadel as well as tombs of some of the great Vietnamese Nguyen emperors.
For our first stop we take you to to the very famous Imperial City of Hue. Hue was the former capital of Vietnam two times throughout history and so Hue houses one of the most impressive ancient cities in Vietnam.
Address: Thành phố Huế, Thua Thien Hue, Vietnam
Hours: Monday - Sunday 8am–5:30pm
Next up we head to a local Vietnamese market nearby. The largest of its kind in Hue being Dong Ba Market. It's 16000 square meters (not km as mentioned in the video sorry!) Worth a visit if you're looking for some cheap goods or a wide variety of Vietnamese cuisine and street food.
Address: 2 Trần Hưng Đạo, Phú Hoà, Thành phố Huế, Thừa Thiên
Hours: Monday - Sunday 6am–6pm
One thing you don't want to miss while you're in Hue is the Perfume River. Its waterways run throughout the entire city and many of the most popular tourist destinations lie along Perfume River's banks. We decided to travel via boat.
We went through tour operators
On the boat ride down Perfume River we stopped off at our next destination - Thien Mu Pagoda. You can also reach Thien Mu Pagoda by car but it is a little bit far. Going by boat to Thien Mu Pagoda is definitely the best option.
Address: Hương Hòa, Thành phố Huế, Hương Hòa Thành phố Huế Thừa Thiên Huế 532761, Vietnam
Hours: Monday - Sunday 8am–6pm
Finally you can't leave Hue without viewing the impressive tombs of the famous Vietnam emperors. We chose a mix of traditional design and architecture by visiting Minh Mạng's tomb:
Address: QL49, Hương Thọ, Hương Trà, Thừa Thiên Huế, Vietnam
And also what had to have been our favourite destination of Hue which was the Royal Tomb of Khai Dinh which architecturally was ahead of its time.
Address: Khải Định, Thủy Bằng, Hương Thủy, Thừa Thiên Huế 530000, Vietnam
Both tombs open from

HUE - KHAI DINH TOMB (VIETNAM)
THUA THIEN IN HUE, IS HOME TO NUMEROUS TOMBS OF NGUYEN DYNASTY’S KINGS WHICH ARE RECOGNIZED AS WORLD HERITAGES BY UNESCO. CONTRIBUTING TO THE COMMON ART TREASURE OF HUMANITY IS THE SYSTEM OF TOMBS WITH ABUNDANT STYLES EXPRESSING EMPERORS CHARACTERISTICS. KHAI DINH TOMB IS SMALL IN EXTENT, LITTLE MORE THAN 5,600 SQUARE METRES. ITS CONSTRCUTION, DECORATIONS AND DETAILS ARE VERY ELABORATE. KHAI DINH TOMB WHEN NEWLY ACCOMPLISHED WAS COMPARED AS A COLOURFUL, MAGNIFICENT AND EXTREMELY SHOWY CAGE. IT IS A VALUABLE WORK OF ART AND ARCHITECTURE. KHAI DINH TOMB IS WELL WORTH A VISIT, WITH SUBLIME ORNAMENTATION THAT IS ALMOST ROCOCO IN ITS ADORNMENT, MOSSY OLD DRAGONS STAINS AND EXTRAORDINARY VIEWS. WE SPENT ABOUT 3 HOURS THERE, AND IT WAS 100% WORTH TO VISIT THE PLACE, AS IT LOOKS LIKE NOTHING I’VE EVER SEEN BEFORE.
Tomb of Emperor Khai Dinh in Hue - Vietnam 4K Travel Channel
The Tomb of Emperor Khai Dinh lies on the slopes of Chau Chu mountain, about 10 km southwest of the center of Hue. Khai Dinh was the 12th emperor of the Nguyen dynasty and Vietnam's second to last emperor. He ruled from 1916 to 1925. He was not very popular among the people, because he was considered a puppet of the French, and particularly interested in his prosperity. His reputation in the popular favor dropped dramatically when he raised taxes of the farmers by 30% for the construction and the magnificent interior of the tomb.
After his accession to the throne, Khai Dinh chose the mountain slope with a beautiful view over the country as a home in the other world.
The construction began in 1920. 11 years later the building was completed by his son Bao Dai, the last emperor of Vietnam Nguyen Dynasty. The Tomb of Emperor Khai Dinh orientates itself at the Chinese Ming Tombs, just like the tomb of Tu Duc. However, this tomb includes a mixture of architectural styles, with many Vietnamese and French elements. At the same time, it documents the haughty manner of this king.
Over steep stairs we reach the Honor Courtyard, where we find statues of Mandarin, horse and elephant. In front is the stele pavilion.
About further laterally guided stairs we reach the grave temples.
In a sumptuously decorated room you can see a statue of the ruler that sits elevated on the grave. Valuable porcelain, Chinese vases, and pictures from the life of the emperor are on display in the side rooms.

The Perfume River (Sông Hương or Hương Giang; ) is a river that crosses the city of Huế, in the central Vietnamese province of Thừa Thiên-Huế Province. In the autumn, flowers from orchards upriver from Huế fall into the water, giving the river a perfume-like aroma, hence the sobriquet.

Last stop Khai Dinh Royal Tomb
The Nguyen Emperor Khai Dinh's Royal Tomb is unique among the royal tombs in Hue, Vietnam. Where other royal tombs are expansive and invite respectful reflection, Khai Dinh built his final resting place to be monumental in style and bombastic in execution. From street level, visitors must climb up a series of steps to reach the tomb's wrought-iron gate. The tomb looks gray and imposing from afar. Emperor Khai Dinh chose to build his tomb out of modern materials like concrete and wrought iron. The tomb is also wired for electricity, a first in Hue tomb design.
Despite the Eastern design sensibility, a large dollop of Western influence can be seen in the details. The Emperor's visit to the 1922 Marseilles Colonial Exhibition in France may account for the tomb design's significant European influence.

Lăng vua Khải Định | Khai Dinh tomb | Hue - Vietnam | Sinhcafe Opentour
sinhcafe.com
Emperor Khai Dinh (1885-1925) ruled Vietnam for 9 years. His tomb took 11 years to complete. Construction began in 1920 and was completed in 1931. Under Khai Dinh, Western culture and influence began to seep into Vietnam. The king himself visited France in 1922. As a result, his tomb has many elements of Western architecture. In fact, of all the tombs, Khai Dinh's probably least resembles oriental architecture.
Emperor Khai Dinh's tomb is built using concrete, its roof with slates and the gate is made of wrought iron. The builder made use of the lighting rod and electricity is used to light the place. Beyond these modern building materials and designs, the tomb had elements of eastern art mixed with western designs.
Throughout the interior of the tomb, colored glass and ceramic chips were used to form mosaics of oriental design. The ceilings were hand painted much like the ceilings of western churches, but the designs were of dragons and clouds. In the book, 'Art Vietnamien', Emperor Khai Dinh's tomb was cited as an example of Vietnamese neo-classicism.
Tomb of Emperor Tu Duc in Hue - Vietnam 4K Travel Channel
The tomb of Tu Duc is located 6 km outside of Hue. LangTu Duc is the burial site of the 4th emperor of the Nguyen dynasty. His reign lasted of 1847-1883 and was marked by uprisings and rebellions. He pursued a policy of isolation and persecuted Christians due to their faith. This called the resistance of the western countries on the plan and resulted in the cession of South Vietnam to the Frenchmen.
From 1864-1867, 3000 workers worked on the creation of the burial site. During Tu Doc's lifetime, it also served as a summer residence.
When you enter the complex, which is surrounded by a high wall, you see the artificial lake with an island in the middle. The emperor used the island as a place for meditation.
When we arrive, divers and workers had to fetch straight garbage and stones out of the muddy water.
Opposite the island is the Xung Khiem pavilion, which was used as a day room. Across a winding path along the lake we reach the honor courtyard via a few steps.
The courtyard is flanked by an elephant, a horse and Mandarin statues.
Directly behind is the stele pavilion. The glorious deeds of the ruler are listed on the stele. The stele is the largest artificial stone block in Vietnam.
Behind is the temple for the worship of the emperor and empress, with the relics of the couple.
A small pond in the middle completes the ensemble. By another gate we reach the real mausoleum which was held very simply.
In the middle of the oval you can see the powerful stone coffin.
On the way back we visit briefly the Summer Palace, which was used for ceremonial purposes. It is located on a small hill in front of the lake.
