Terracotta Army: The greatest archaeological find of the 20th century - BBC News
In March 1974, Chinese farmers digging a well unearthed the greatest archaeological find of the century - the buried Terracotta Army. After coming across a life-sized human head made of clay in Xi’an, China, archaeologists were called in to investigate. What they found was extraordinary. Thousands of life-like terracotta figures from the Qin dynasty, fashioned 2,000 years ago to protect the First Emperor of China in the afterlife. Archaeologist Li Xiuzhen has worked on the site since the 1980s. Her team was the first to discover that each warrior was originally painted in bright colours.

Xi'an, the eternal city, records the great changes of the Chinese nation just like a living history book.
The cultural and historical significance of the area, as well as the abundant relics and sites, help Xi'an enjoy the laudatory title of 'Natural History Museum'. The Museum of Terra Cotta Warriors and Horses is praised as 'the eighth major miracle of the world', Mausoleum of Emperor Qin Shi Huang is listed on the World Heritage List, and the City Wall of the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644) is the largest and most intact Ming Dynasty castle in the world. In the city, there is the 3,000 year old Banpo Village Remains from the Neolithic Age (approximately from 8000 BC to 5000 BC), and the Forest of Stone Steles that holds 3,000 stone steles of different periods from the Han Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty.
Around Xi'an, the Famen Temple enjoys the reputation of being the 'forefather of pagodas and temples in Central Shaanxi,' because it holds the finger bones of Sakyamuni -- the founder of Buddhism. The natural landscape around Xian is also marvelous. Mt. Huashan, one of the five best-known mountains in China, is famous for its breath-taking cliffs and its unique characteristics.
Traditional downtown Xi'an refers to the area encircled by the city wall, this has now been expanded to encompass the area within the second ring road (Er' huan Lu). The Bell Tower is the geographical center of Xi'an and the four main streets are respectively Dong Dajie, Xi Dajie, Nan Dajie and Bei Dajie which are also the main commercial streets. Xiao Zhai, the busiest commercial area is in the southern part of the city and is popular with both youths and students since many universities are located here. Shuyuan Men and the still under construction Luoma Shi are must-visit pedestrian streets in the city. Xian is also famous for its quantity of colleges throughout China. The old campuses of many colleges and universities are massed in the southern suburb of Xi'an, but most have established new campuses in far southern suburb - Chang'an District due to the lack of space within the city.
As tourist development grows in Xi'an, the hotel industry flourishes more and more. It is very easy to find a hotel in Xian, ranging from 5 star hotels to youth hostels. Of course, it will be any traveler's first choice to stay in the city center due to the superior geographical location and the convenient transportation.
Xi'an is the most important city in northwest China, and so there are a lot of shopping outlets for locals and tourists alike. There are many big shopping centers, department stores and supermarkets in and around Xian city - the biggest and most comprehensive being Kai Yuan Shopping Mall and Century Ginwa Shopping Mall.
The night life in Xi'an has a unique glamour. Traditional ways include enjoying the night scenery around the Bell Tower, taking part in a Tang Dynasty Dinner Show, strolling on the ancient Big Wild Goose Pagoda Square and watching the music fountain performance. More modern and fashionable ways include singing in the KTV, hanging out in a bar, or dancing in a Disco. All in all, any experience in this ancient city will bring you fun and possibly a little surprise!

Terracotta Krieger, Xian - China Travel Channel
Worldwide attention continues to focus on the Terracotta Warriors of the 1st Chinese Emperor, Qinshi Huangdi. The Terracotta Warriors were discovered by accident in 1974 30 km east of Xian at the foot of the Li mountain, directly adjacent to the Emperor's grave mound which itself has never been opened. 7300 lifesize clay soldiers, archers, officers, horses and battle wagons remained underground for 2000 years. Around 1000 figures are now exposed, while the other figures were once again covered with soil to preserve their color until they can be prepared for the conservation process.
The entire complex, built by 700,000 forced laborers, demonstrates the power of the rulers who first united the Chinese empire, introduced a bureaucratic structure which still characterizes China today, and who also introduced a unified currency and system of writing. The Emperor, known for his legalistic discharge of duties, conducted the firs tbook burning in history and persecuted alternative-thinking intellectuals who were buried alive.

The First Emperor: China's Terracotta Army
The Terracotta Army was discovered on 29 March 1974 by farmers digging a water well approximately 1.5 kilometres (0.93 mi) east of the Qin Emperor's tomb mound at Mount Li (Lishan), Xi'An, Shaanxi Province, PRC. The Terracotta Army is a collection of terracotta sculptures depicting the armies of Qin Shi Huang, the first Emperor of China. It is a form of funerary art buried with the emperor in 210–209 BCE and whose purpose was to protect the emperor in his afterlife.
The First Emperor of China
Qin Shi Huang 259 BC -- 210 BC. was the king of the Chinese State of Qin from 246 BC to 221 BC, during the Warring States Period. He became the first emperor of a unified China in 221 BC He ruled until his death in 210 BC at the age of 49. Calling himself the First Emperor after China's unification, Qín Shǐ Huáng is a pivotal figure in Chinese history, ushering in nearly two millennia of imperial rule. After unifying China, he and his chief advisor Li Si passed a series of major economic and political reforms. He undertook gigantic projects, including building and unifying various sections of the Great Wall of China, the now famous city-sized mausoleum guarded by the life-sized Terracotta Army, and a massive national road system.

Terracotta Army and City Wall of Xian, China
Xi’an, China
12 - 13 October 2016
We arrived in Xi’an by night train in the morning. In the afternoon we visited the #Terracotta #Army. The Terracotta Army is made in 214 BC. The army was intended to defend the grave of Emperor Qin Shi Shihuang. There are 6.000 worriers in line. All the worriers are unique. They have an amazing detail and are in full size.
There is a #city wall around the old city of Xi’an. The city wall is 3 to 4 km. The wall is constructed in 1370 and remains intact as to this day. It is nice to ride a bike on the wall. Around the wall you find the City Wall Park. The City Wall Park is used for sporting and dancing.
Xi’an has been the capital of China for centuries. Xi’an was the starting point of the #Silk #Road. The Silk Road linked China with the Mediterranean See. The Silk Road is used from 220 BC till the Middle Ages. In that time Xi’an has grown to one of the biggest cities in the world with 2 million inhabitants. Now Xi’an is with 8 million inhabitants much smaller the Beijing (22 million inhabitants) and Shanghai (24 million inhabitants).
Within the City Wall of Xi’an we visited the Bell Tower, the Drum Tower and the Muslim Quarter.
We left Xi’an by night train in direction of Lanzhou.
