Rice to feed a nation and a river system to transport it: The Tone River was the basis of Sawara's early prosperity. Located 70 kilometres east of Tokyo, the town is known today for its canals, shrines and traditional crafts. The town is one of the few where the craft of drum making is still practised. Drums and flutes are central to the two main festivals held every spring and autumn. Both festivals relate to the rice harvest, from which sake is produced. The major brewery has been producing rice wine for 150 years, and is popular among tourists. So too are the town's parks and gardens. Newly weds are drawn to the Aquatic Botanical Gardens, particularly in June, when the Irises are in bloom.

It's the fall foliage season in Minakami-machi. From the top of Mt. Tanigawadake, we've captured a patch of the crimson foliage that can be seen beyond the sea of clouds. The mountain lodges are closed on November the third. Tanigawadake soon turns into a snowcapped mountain. The Tone River basin is ablaze with fall colours of the leaves. Joyful days of hot springs are missed by everyone when Minakami-machi prepares for the upcoming winter.

Whitewater Rafting, Momiji Gorge, Minakami, Japan
Minakami is situated in the Gunma prefecture, around one and half hours from Tokyo. I went for a rafting tour with H2O (Damone- Thumps up!!- Yeeeh), who supplied us with wetsuits, rafting guide, and hot post-raft showers. We rafted about 13km down the Tone River along the gorgeous clear water, passing impressive cliff-scapes, onsen towns and river banks along the way. Momiji Gorge was amazingly beautiful.....
