Two hour public queue for Tooting Lido as heatwave hits the UK
A rambler collapsed in the heat in Dorset, surfaces melted in Grimsby and Londoners faced searing heat on the Tube. Police were called after scuffles broke out at the Brockwell and Parliament Hill lidos in London as hundreds of people tried to get in, while food was removed from the shelves of a Sainsbury's in Bolton after its freezers broke. Temperatures hit 99.9F (37.7C) in London at 3pm today - making it the hottest day of the year, the warmest July day on record and the second hottest day in UK history - with the mercury still set to rise further this afternoon. Commuters were warned to stay at home amid fears rail tracks will buckle as police issued a warning about swimming during the heatwave after three men drowned. 1978 documentary, Part One of five parts. Admire my Harry Hill collar, and wig. Mike (Mr Enthusiasm) Smith clearly wonders why on earth he's allowed me to get him up on a Sunday morning to take part in this rot, for five consecutive weeks. Believe it or not, this film was considered a state-of-the-art home movie back then. Canon 814E Super 8 camera. Sound: Charlie's home-made system, using sprocketed tape (ordinary quarter-inch audio tape with actual holes in it) that could be synched to talkie sequences for transfer to a magnetic stripe on film edge. There was no machine to do proper sound/picture editing, so i had to count the holes in the tape corresponding to a musical phrase or whatever, and then cut that amount of film to match. Took for ever, and impossible to get sharp cuts. I've trimmed many of the shots where possible - all too long and editing sloppy. This film did the rounds of Women's Institutes, camera cubs, history societies, etc in South London, for around 2 years before I retired it. Now, it mostly makes slow-drying paint look exciting, but in '79 I was headhunted and got a better job, as a film technician, on the strength of this movie. I hear that they've built, or are building, several floodlit enclosed football pitches on the common, bussing in pupils from schools outside the borough who have sold off their pitches to property developers. The car parks get bigger, the 'facilities' increase, and all the green is going.....
