Toruń: The Medieval Pearl of Poland
Toruń, Poland is a stunningly well preserved medieval city that is now protected by UNESCO. Unlike many other parts of Poland, Toruń has never been destroyed so the old town is like an outdoor museum. Taking a stroll is a lesson in the history of architecture. Founded by the Teutonic Knights in 1236 (the castle ruins are still here), Toruń is perhaps best known as the birthplace of genius Renaissance man, Nicolaus Copernicus. Amongst many things, he is credited with coming up with a heliocentric model of the universe and changing the course of science. Toruń is also known for its gingerbread, which it's been making since the fourteenth century. Toruń is a true gem within Europe that somehow isn't full of the crowds of tourists and high price tags you find in many other such fairytale towns.

GINGERBREAD Museum Muzeum PIERNIKA (Budget Travel Poland) {Torun, POLAND}
Budget Travel Poland #10
The Gingerbread Museum (Muzeum Piernika) offers tours and baking lessons for these deliciously flavored cookies and pastries.
Ever wonder how gingerbread gets its spicy flavor? Matt does and the Gingerbread Museum demonstrates how this pastry gained its origins and was prepared 500 years ago in medieval Poland.
Also on the menu is learning about how Torun, now a UNESCO Heritage Site, was instrumental in the spice trade.

Toruń,Poland was founded by the Teutonic Order, in the 13th century. The unique spatial layout of Toruń has remained unchanged for 700 years.
During the Middle Ages it developed a commercial role as part of the Hanseatic League. In the Old and New Town, imposing buildings from the 14th and 15th centuries (among them the house of Copernicus) are striking evidence of Toruń's rich past.
A Gothic town hall built in the late 14th century is the centrepiece of Torun’s old town. It is one of the biggest brick buildings of its kind in Europe. For centuries, it was the administrative and commercial hub of the city; it was near here that fairs were held, tribute was paid to the rulers, knights fought in tournaments, and the condemned were publically executed. Today, the building houses a district museum, where visitors can see local handicraft and Polish paintings from the 19th and 20th centuries.
One of the medieval tenements from the second half of the 15th century houses the Home of Nicolaus Copernicus, the astronomer who proved that the Earth does not sit at the centre of universe, but rather orbits the sun along with other planets.
Torun’s medieval city walls are the oldest in Poland. Their first section dates back to 1246-62. Almost from its very beginnings, the city was surrounded by two rings of defence walls separated by a wet moat. A single wall was only built along the Vistula riverside. A three-kilometre long section of Torun’s city walls had 54 towers, 12 gates and two barbicans proper. Nine towers and three gates have survived to this day.
An old Teutonic castle was part of the city’s defences alongside high walls, towers, and gates. Today, it is a favourite site for walks, theatre performances, and music concerts.
An attractive walking route is also Podmurna Street, Torun’s longest medieval street. This cobbled road is full of charming nooks and historic monuments. The street begins near the moat and the Burgher House, and weaves its way next to an historic granary, the Feline Head tower, and the Mint Gate.
Its 15-metre-high Leaning Tower constructed at the turn of the 14th century is inclined like the famous Tower of Pisa.

In this video I want to share with you the highlights of my one day in Torun, Poland.
This is a beautiful, medieval town in the northern region of Poland. I visited as a day trip from Gdansk taking the train both ways.
Torun is known as the gingerbread capital of Europe and everywhere in the old town you'll find bakeries selling gingerbread cookies of all kinds.
Some of the other best things to do in Torun, Poland include the gingerbread Museum, the different monuments, the castle ruins, and all of the great food.
While small, the Torun Old Town is one of the most best-preserved and picturesque in all of Poland. Bonus tip: head across the river for a different view of the Old Town.
There are plenty of local breweries and affordable restaurants throughout the city. I recommend pierogi and a local beer!
Hope you enjoyed this video about my trip to Torun, Poland. Thanks for watching!
Toruń Regional Museum, Kuyavian-Pomeranian, Poland, Europe
Toruń Regional Museum, located in the Ratusz hall of Toruń, is one of the oldest and largest museums in Poland. It started in 1594 as the mere Cabinet of Curiosities at the library of the academic Gimnazjum, called Musaeum in Latin. Re-established in sovereign Poland as a city museum in 1920 after the century of military partitions, it was administratively structured as the regional museum in 1965.

This gingerbread was first made in Torun and is now the main experience for children. I participated in the experience. First, you apply oil to every corner of the frame, and you build up the dough with care and it is a success if you do not fall out of your hand. And when you put on the cloth and put it into the frame to make the pattern and then remove it, the dough is finished. Now just wait for the baking and you will get a delicious gingerbread. Legend has it that a baker at a royal wedding gave him a special piece of bread as a sign of love, the appearance of the bread combining the hearts and rings of the two lovers. The gingerbread begins with a commemoration of the name Katagina , a six-circle shape. And the ginger bread contains a lot of ingredients, but the most important thing is the whole flavor of the spice. The different breads of Torun were different from other European breads, adding a variety of spices. At that time, it was possible because Torun was a distribution center for products connecting Asia and Western Europe. Finally, the baked ginger bread came out. The bread I made is right. Ginger bread with a pattern. I ate it once.

Imbirowy chleb z wzorem. Zjadłem to raz.

Toruń is an ancient city in northern Poland, on the Vistula River. Its population is 205,934 as of June 2009. Toruń is one of the oldest cities in Poland. The medieval old town of Toruń is the birthplace of the astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus. In 1997 the medieval part of the city was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In 2007 the Old Town in Toruń was added to the list of Seven Wonders of Poland. National Geographic Polska rated the old town market and the Gothic town hall as one of the 30 Most Beautiful Places in the World. In 2010 Forbes magazine ranked Toruń as number one of the Polish Cities Attractive for Business. In 2009 it was listed as one of the Best Cities to Live in Poland, in a ranking published by Przekrój. Previously it was the capital of the Toruń Voivodeship (1975-98) and the Pomeranian Voivodeship (1921-45). Since 1999, Toruń has been a seat of the self-government of the Kujawy-Pomerania Province and, as such, is one of its two capitals (together with Bydgoszcz). The cities and neighboring counties form the Bydgoszcz-Toruń twin city metropolitan area. In September 2004, Bydgoszcz Medical School joined Toruń's Nicolaus Copernicus University as its Collegium Medicum. The current Mayor of Toruń is Mr. Michał Zaleski. Toruń has two drama theatres (Teatr im. Wilama Horzycy with three stages and Teatr Wiczy), two children's theatres (Baj Pomorski and Zaczarowany Świat), two music theatres (Mała Rewia, Studencki Teatr Tańca), and numerous other theatre groups. The city hosts, among others events, the international theatre festival, Kontakt, annually in May A building called Baj Pomorski has recently been completely reconstructed. It is now one of the most modern cultural facilities in the city, with its front elevation in the shape of a gigantic chest of drawers. It is located at the south-east edge of the Old Town. Toruń has a number of cinemas including a Cinema City, which has over 2,000 seats. Over ten major museums document the history of Toruń and the region. Among others, the House of Kopernik and the accompanying museum commemorate Nicolaus Copernicus and his revolutionary work, the university museum reveals the history of the city's academic past. The Centre of Contemporary Art (Centrum Sztuki Współczesnej - CSW) opened in June 2008 and is one of the most important cultural facilities of this kind in Poland. The modern building is located in the very centre of the city, adjacent to the Old Town. The Toruń Symphonic Orchestra (formerly the Toruń Chamber Orchestra) is well-rooted in the Toruń cultural landscape. Toruń is equipped with a planetarium (located downtown) and an astronomical observatory (located in nearby community of Piwnice). The latter boasts the largest radio telescope in the Eastern part of Central Europe with a diameter of 32 m (104.99 ft), second only to the Effelsberg 100 m (328.08 ft) radio telescope. Toruń is well known for Toruń gingerbread, a type of pierniki often made in elaborate moulds. Muzeum Piernika in Toruń is the only museum dedicated to gingerbread in Europe.

Torun, Poland
Toruń is a beautiful, medieval city in North-Western Poland, situated on the Vistula River. Its architecture has managed to escape bombing, and as such represents one of the only examples of true gothic architecture in Poland. Still reasonably off the radars of most European travelers, one can expect to have an amazing Polish experience here without the nightmares of a million and one inter ail travelers.
