Thank you John for sharing all your experiences with the world. You bring such amazing content about Japan to us. Keep doing this for years to come! (Thank you Brofessor Dell! I'm so appreciative of your support and I will absolutely keep doing this for as long as I possibly can!!)
★ Tom Higgins (Thank you!)
★ Eric Holleran
Thanks for wonderful steam the cafe is very cool (You're welcome Eric!)
★ Bobby Boy
would you prefer to live in the country side than tokyo? would love to learn more about architecture and music (It's hard to answer this. It depends where. I love Daisen and Tottori because they have mountains, sea, onsen, small city (Yonago) and the countryside and good food! Many countryside places I'd pass on. Tokyo is very very convenient but I think the city life can get old after many years. It's nice to have both worlds if I can :)
★ Matt J
coffee on me. Hi John. (Thank you! I'll put it to good use soon because Otsuka-san paid for the coffee this time!)
★ Von Keomalavong
Most interesting food you've eatten so far? (WOW!! Maybe Hoya. It's sea squirt. It's also very very disgusting but - it is interesting.)
★ hellohi821
Hi, John! Here is something for your hard work in Tottori: I have enjoyed your live streams there. Get something nice before departing for Tokyo. (Thank you ALWAYS Jim :) I had a very nice lunch with Otsuka-san before we left and a beer at the airport before getting on.)
★ Brofessor Dell
I love the videos John! I'll be in Japan in April 2019! Eat some good food on me! (Awesome! You'll be here for the cherry blossom season which is perfect! I definitely had more than my fair share of amazing food - ate Tottori Wagyu the day before this. It won the no.1 prize at the wagyu olympics and I can say - it was really good!)
★ dark zaku
What's the best season to visit Japan in your opinion? (It's hard to say. It depends on you! Cherry blossoms from March 24 to April 10 is really nice!! I love summer because I love the long hot days! Early Autumn is also nice because there is no humidity, less tourists and good food comes out for this season. Winter, I can say for sure, I definitely don't like! Unless you're a skiier ...)
Japan's Least Populated Prefecture | Tottori Prefecture Travel Guide
Tottori Prefecture is a hidden gem of Japan and an off the beaten path place to visit but it's definitely one of my top 3 favourite prefectures in Japan!!! I can't wait to share with you what I did in Tottori Prefecture in 4 days and just how underrated this place is.... :(
You can get to Tottori easily via direct flights from Tokyo(Haneda or Narita Airport), direct buses depart from all over Japan's major cities and of course you can take the limited express train (Super Hakuta) from many areas such as Kyoto and Osaka.
Here are the places I visited in the video:
More detailed info here:
- Mitaki-en Restaurant (Japanese seasonal Sansai cuisine)
- Clear Kayaking at Uradome Coast
- Takumi Shabu Shabu Restaurant
- Totori Sand Dunes
- Sankouen Pear Orchard
- Tottori Sand Museum
- Karoichi Fish Market
- Misasa Onsen Hot Spring Town

No matter how many times you visit, there’s more to Japan than you have ever imagined.
Travel with us through Western Japan as we explore its hidden delights, rich history, culture and breathtaking natural beauty.
■TripNotes
Spot1:Tottori Sand Dunes/Sand Museum
The Tottori Sand Dunes are located about 20 minutes by bus from Tottori Station. The sand has been gathering here naturally for over 100,000 years, creating a golden landscape. You can explore the sand dunes on a fat-bike that can be ridden over the sand, or on a camel, paraglider, or sandboard.
The Sand Museum has beautiful sand sculptures themed on different countries and regions.
Spot2:Shirakabe Dozogun
Japanese traditional wooden structures and white lime plaster warehouses are lined-up at Shirakabe Dozogun. This area once prospered as a commercial district of the castle town and the buildings were used as soy sauce distilleries and breweries. With the small stone bridges built over the canals, you can feel the history in this old-fashioned townscape.
Stroll on the streets, stop by the galleries and cafés and enjoy the feeling of being in old Japan.
Spot3:Misasa Hot Spring
As one of the most prominent radium hot springs in the world, Misasa Hot Spring has been helping people with various illnesses to relax for over 800 years. Inns, shops, foot baths and small temples line the stone-paved hot spring town. You'll find the perfect hot spring for you whether it be the mixed outdoor bath that the locals go to, or a more private option at a luxury inn.
Enjoy forest bathing after the bath. The matrimonial frog awaits you at Koya Bridge.
Food:Seafood at Hot Spring Inns
Tottori offers many seafood products regardless of the season, and it also leads Japan in terms of crabbing volume.
At the Misasa Hot Spring inns you can enjoy seafood dishes made with plenty of fresh seafood.
Relax yourself in hot springs and then have some delicious crab cuisine.

Japan's Most Terrifying Bridge: Eshima Ohashi ★ ONLY in JAPAN #33
It's been nicknamed the ROLLER COASTER BRIDGE because of it's super steep slope and appearance of being a bridge to the sky.
That's the Eshima Ohashi Bridge straddling Shimane and Tottori prefecture in Japan.
Facts about the Eshima Ohashi:
★ 1,446 meters long
★ 250 meters of continupus concrete in the center (the third longest Ramen bridge in the world!)
★ 6.1% grade slope on the Shimane Prefecture side
★ 5.1% grade on the Tottori side
★ The bridge needed to be high in the center to allow large shops to pass under.
☆ From the Shimane side, you can get the optical illusion view at the end of the street by the sea.
☆ If you have a good telephoto lens, go even further to the other side of the sea for a better shot. (Map below)
The bridge has a good pedestrian footpath on both sides of the road.
Bicycles are not allowed on the footpath so stay on the main road with the car, to the left side.
There is an observation point on the top that offers sweeping views all the way to Daisen (mountain).
The closest major access point is Yonago Station and airport on the Sea of Japan. From there, take a train to Sakaiminato and rent a bicycle or grab a taxi.
Sakaiminato is also famous for Japanese anime and the main street is like a museum of monsters!
The bridge is a 20 minute ride from Sakai Minato.
Take food with you from the station.

Iwami Ginzan Village - Shimane - 石見銀山
Iwami Ginzan Village who’s official name is Omori Town, is located in the Oda mountain of Shimane, a beautiful mountain village famous for its silver. While most silver in the surrounding mines have been extracted, Iwami Ginzan Village is still thriving thanks to its many temples and of course its silver mine museum which has been a world heritage site since 2007.

All about Sado in Winter | Japan Travel Guide
More information about Sado:
- Geography
Sado is located in the Sea of Japan and is a part of Niigata Prefecture. The island is 855 km2(330 mile2)in area which is bigger than the 23 wards of Tokyo(621 km2 = 240 mile2)and the country of Bahrain(758 km2 = 293 mile2)which is ranked 184th in the world. The tourist season is in summer, but there are also people who make the effort to come in winter to view the rough waves of the Sea of Japan at that time.
- Landmarks
Landmarks include Sado Gold Mine whose mountain top has been cleaved in half due to the efforts of gold mining, Toki Forest Park where you can see the Japanese crested ibis which is an endangered species, and the Ogi Diving Center where you can get a unique sea kayaking experience through blue grottoes and the waters of the Sea of Japan. There are also plenty of highlights such as Chokoku-ji Temple where you can have more than 30 Buddhist experiences including one involving entering a coffin. Usually between April and October, you can view traditional nighttime performances of Noh theater which occur outside the temple, and with Sado being the base for the world-famous Kodo wadaiko drumming troupe, you can hear the drumming amid nature as one example of art and nature splendidly co-existing.
- Food
The specialty of Sado Island which is completely encircled by the Sea of Japan has got to be seafood. It’s no exaggeration to say that sushi with several times the taste can be savored here at only a fraction of the price charged in Tokyo. The new local dish that has been all the rage is buri-katsudon or deep-fried yellowtail on rice. Natural yellowtail deep-fried as a cutlet covered in a special sauce consisting of ago-dashi soy sauce topped on Sado rice makes for a superb dish. The sake brewed from the nature of the island is also delicious, and the island is also home to the brewery for Manotsuru sake which is the sake served in first class on Air France flights.
- Getting Around
It takes the better part of 2 hours from Tokyo to Niigata Station, followed by a 15-minute bus ride to Niigata Port. And then it’s a trip by ferry for 1-2.5 hours from Niigata Port to Ryotsu Port on Sado Island.
Rental cars are handy for getting around the island. There is no train service. Rental electric bicycles are also convenient.
- Accommodations
Accommodations around Ryotsu Port are convenient on the first day. Aikawa and Mano which are located in the center of the island are also great as starting points for sightseeing.

Tottori (鳥取市 Tottori-shi?) is the capital city of Tottori Prefecture in the Chūgoku region of Japan.
As of February 28, 2015, the city has an estimated population of 192,800, with 78,431 households and a population density of 251.92 persons per km². The total area is 765.31 km².
Within Japan the city is best known for its sand dunes which are a popular tourist attraction, drawing visitors from outside of the prefecture. The sand dunes are also important as a centre for research into arid agriculture, hosting Tottori University's Arid Land Research Center. Most of Tottori is located in the western part of the San'in Kaigan Geopark.[c
The Sand Museum (砂の美術館 Suna no Bijutsukan?) first opened by the Tottori Sand Dunes, Tottori, Japan in 2006, displaying sand sculptures in temporary facilities. In 2012 it reopened in what is said to be the world's first permanent indoor exhibition space dedicated to the art, with works by fifteen international sculptors.[1]

Mt. NOKO~IRI-Famous for Scenic Beauty
The Precinct of the temple, with many picturesque spots, with
18 wonders, 36 sights, is designated by the CHIBA prefectures as a
place of extraordinary beauty. The maginificent spectacle of the
Three Peaks are named after the famous followers of Buddha, RURI,
NICHIREN and GATSURIN. The panoramic splendor from the mountain
top of the whole KANTO area, Tokyo Bay below, and Mt. FUJI beyond,
is breathlessly exquisite. It takes two whole days to see and admire
all this magnificence. Besides being a place of scenic beauty, Mt.
NOKOGIRI is also a valuable treasure-trove for academic researchers.
Geologists and naturalists speak of this mountain as a great museum
made by nature.
