H&HT | Backpacking India: Ep6 - Kolkata, Sundarbans & Mandarmoni
Welcome to India. We will be backpacking through India for the next six weeks, slowly making our way east and homewards to Australia.
In this episode, we travelled from Varanasi via an overnight sleeper train to Kolkata where we stayed two nights and enjoying the city life at Backpacker’s Park Hostel. It was really nice to be back in a more modern setting but still with the quirkiness of a typical India city that we have come to love (or hate). Plus the hostel we stayed at was by far the most sociable we had experienced in six weeks of travelling the country.
We then spent two nights/three days in the Sundarbans with Backpackers Tour de Sundarbans: It was easily the highlight of our trip so far in India and 100% our #1 “must do”. Although we missed out on the opportunity to join a group (another couple pulled out the day before), it really meant we were given the freedom to dictate our itinerary for the three days, which worked out in our favour as we were incredibly fortunate to be able to see a Royal Bengal Tiger whilst not strictly following the itinerary (talk to your guide on the day, they know what they are doing).
We then headed back to Kolkata for another night at Backpacker’s Park before catching a bus the next morning to Mandarmoni, a beachside town not usually frequented by foreign travellers. We stayed two nights, which meant a full day spent at the beach! Not usually on the backpacking itinerary, we were eager to see something off the beaten track and desperate for a swim to avoid the Indian heat, so for us, it was worth it.
We then headed back to Kolkata for one last night before hopping on a red-eye flight to Myanmar via Bangkok…but you’ll have to wait to see that in the next vlog.
Catch up on the Backpacking India series here:
Enjoy!

Sunderban trip from kolkata, West Bengal tourism | সুন্দরবনে কি দেখবেন ?
The Sundarbans is a vast forest in the coastal region of the Bay of Bengal; considered one of the natural wonders of the world, it was recognised in 1997 as a UNESCO World Heritage Site of Bangladesh. Located in the delta region of Padma, Meghna and Brahmaputra river basins, this unique forest area extends across Khulna, Satkhira, Bagerhat districts of Bangladesh and South 24 Parganas, North 24 Parganas districts of West Bengal, India. The Sundarbans is the world's largest coastal mangrove forest, with an area of approximately 10,000 sq km; of which approximately 6,000 sq km is situated in Bangladesh and approximately 4,000 sq km in India. The Bangladeshi and Indian parts of the Sundarbans, while in fact adjacent parts of the uninterrupted landmark, have been listed separately in the UNESCO World Heritage List: as Sundarbans and Sundarban National Park respectively. The Sundarbans are a network of marine streams, mud shores and mangrove forests. The region is known to contain numerous species of animals, birds and reptiles, including Royal Bengal Tiger, Chital Deer, Crocodile and Snakes . On 21 May 1992, the Sundarbans was recognized as a Ramsar Site of ecological importance.
Weekend Trip to Calcutta and the Sundarbans
Hey, this is my first video I've ever made. I'm currently studying in Delhi and spent a long weekend in the colonial city of Calcutta (Kolkata). The quality is mediocre at best and the aspect ratio is for instagram but I thought some might enjoy this. I'm currently editing another travel video with (hopefully) a lot better quality so please stay tuned :)

Ganga River Cruise in Kolkata
#Kolkata #RiverCruise #Hindi
River cruise on a big scale is a very recent phenomenon in Kolkata. Therefore, on our Kolkata trip this time, we decided to take a special cruise on the banks of river Hooghly. To add to our joy, we took it on the auspicious day of VijayDashmi (Dussehra) to enjoy the Durga idol immersion.
We took a cruise organized by Vivada cruises. We were on board MV Paramhansa. We were welcomed with warm hospitality and refreshing drinks were served. We were provided with snacks followed by dinner. It was a 4 hour cruise.
On the occasion of Vijayadashmi the charges were Rs.2500 per person, however, on normal days, the charges are Rs.1000 per person. It originates from Millennium Park and goes to Belurmath and returns back.
We sailed around the popular waters of Hooghly (Ganges) in Kolkata. It is believed that this amazing city grew along the great river of Ganges. With the backdrop of the stunning Howrah Bridge it was a picturesque evening. There are 54 Ghats and all have great history and heritage.
According to Vivada Cruises, they also offer luxurious and successful inland waterway cruise to Varanasi, lower Ganges and Sunderbans.

????????About Sunderban National Park
????Sunderbans national park is located at the South Eastern tip of the 24 Paraganas district in the state of West Bengal. It got its name from one of the mangrove plants known as Sundari (Heritiera Minor). The Sundarbans are a part of the world's largest delta formed by the rivers Ganges,Brahmaputra and Meghna. Sundarban is a vast area covering 4262 square kms in India alone, with a larger portion in Bangladesh. 2585 sq. kms of the Indian Sundarban forms the largest Tiger Reserve and National Park in India. The total area of the Indian part of the Sundarban forest, lying within the latitude between 21°13'-22°40' North and longitude 88°05'-89°06' East, is about 4,262 sq km, of which 2,125 sq km is occupied by mangrove forest across 56 islands and the balance is under water.
????????????????The park is surrounded by a buffer zone of 885 square kilometers. This also mainly consists of mangrove forests. The core area of the park has it's own natural boundaries with the river Matla on it's West, the river Haribhanga on it's East, with Netidhopani and Gosba in the North.
????????The four Sunderbans national parks have been lumped together as they all share common features of the estuarine mangrove ecosystem. The main attractions of the Sunderbans are the Tiger, of which the delta harbor large reptiles like the Monitor Lizard, Estuarine Crocodile and the Olive Ridley Turtle, for which there is a conservation programme in the Indian park. The Leopard, Indian Rhinoceros, Javan Rhinoceros, Swamp Deer, Hog Deer and Water Buffalo have all become locally extinct from the delta in recent decades.
????????Best Season (Sunderban National Park):
The best time to visit Sunderbans is during winters between December and February.although the park is open for longer from September to March. This is the period when the maximum migratory birds are also present here.
????????Access(Sunderban National Park) :

Sundarban- National- Park is in the South 24 Parganas of West Bengal, India. The meaning of the Bengali word sundarban is beautiful forest.
.The Sundarbans are the largest littoral mangrove belt in the world, stretching 80km (50mi) into the Bangladeshi and Indian hinterland from the coast Mangroves are shrubs or small trees that grow in coastal saline or brackish water. Sundarban National Park has a number of entry points. Irrespective of any point from where you want to enter the Sundarbans national Park, you have to reach the entry point from Kolkata by road. Since 1966 the Sundarbans have been a wildlife sanctuary, and it is estimated that there are now 400 Royal Bengal tigers and about 30,000 spotted deer in the area. The forest is called 'Sunderban' due to the rich growth of Sundari trees.
