Travel tips for the city of Athens!
From the Port, it takes 20 minutes to drive to the city of Athens. If you wanted to explore Athens on your own, it'll take 1 hour by subway or 40 minutes by bus.
I don't think that's worth it. I would probably take a taxi instead. It should cost about 9 euros each way.
Once you somehow get your way in Athens the city is really walkable. All the popular sites are pretty close to one another.
Because of that, after the tour I felt like I could have explored Athens on my own and saved the money. But I'll let you judge the experience. Our tour cost 95 euros/person.
Top Sights in Athens, Greece:
1) Acropolis
If the line is long, they also have another entrance in the south side that is away from the parking lot so it much fewer people. Tickets for Acropolis is 20 euros a person.
Once you get in it is a little hike up to the top of Acropolis.
Located on the southwest slope of Acropolis is this stone theatre built in 161 AD. This theatre holds 5,000 people and was used for music concerts.
2) Parthenon
The most famous building in the citadel is the Parthenon. It is a temple dedicated to the goddess Athena.
3) Erechtheion
This is a Greek temple on the north side of Acropolis dedicated to Athena and Poseidon. On the south side of the building is the famous Porch of the Maidens with six female figures as supporting columns.
4) Hadrian's Gate
It was built to celebrate the arrival of the Roman emperor Hadrian. It's kind of like the roman triumphal arches. It is made out of Pentelic marble. This is the same marble used for the Parthenon.
5) Temple of Olympian Zeus
Don't waste your money going into to see the Temple of Olympian Zeus as you can actually see it for free outside the gates. If you want to walk in and admire just how tall these pillars are the entrance fee is 6 euros.
6) Panathenaic Stadium
Next stop: This multipurpose stadium is huge! It is the only stadium in the world built entirely out of marble. It used to be built out of limestone. Marble was used in 144 AD.
7) Athen's White House
I'm here visiting the white house of Greece, but I haven't even visited my own country's White House. It was built in 1897 for Prince Constantine I. Now it is the official residence of the president of the Hellenic Republic.
8) Changing of the Presidential Guards
From here you can see the changing of the presidential guards. Like the guards, in London they also can't make any facial or eye movements and must not show any expression.
9) The Academy of Athens
This building is divided into three orders: Natural Sciences, Letters and Arts, and Moral and Political Sciences.
10) Plaka
Next stop: Plaka. It's an old historical neighborhood of Athens. It is known as the neighborhood of the Gods because it's really close to Acropolis and archaeological sites. The entire area is closed to cars. Plaka has a village feel, with narrow cobblestone streets lined with tiny shops selling jewelry, clothes and local ceramics.

Greece Travel Guide
Greece is a country in southeastern Europe with thousands of islands throughout the Aegean and Ionian seas. Greece is a Member-State of the European Union and uses its uniform currency – the Euro. Athens is the nation's capital and largest city, followed by Thessaloniki.
Greece Travel Guide
Greece is strategically located at the crossroads of Europe, Asia, and Africa. Greece consists of nine geographic regions: Macedonia, Central Greece, the Peloponnese, Thessaly, Epirus, the Aegean Islands (including the Dodecanese and Cyclades), Thrace, Crete, and the Ionian Islands. The Aegean Sea lies to the east of the mainland, the Ionian Sea to the west, the Cretan Sea and the Mediterranean Sea to the south.
Greece Travel Guide
Greece is considered the cradle of Western civilization, being the birthplace of democracy, Western philosophy, the Olympic Games, Western literature, historiography, political science, major scientific and mathematical principles, and Western drama.
Greece Travel Guide
Greece is a democratic and developed country with an advanced high-income economy, a high quality of life, and a very high standard of living. Greece was the tenth member to join the European Communities (precursor to the European Union) and has been part of the Eurozone since 2001.
Greece Travel Guide
The names for the nation of Greece and the Greek people differ from the names used in other languages, locations and cultures. Although the Greeks call the country Hellas or Ellada and its official name is the Hellenic Republic, in English it is referred to as Greece. Greece is home to the first advanced civilizations in Europe and is considered the birthplace of Western civilization.
Greece Travel Guide
Greece is a transcontinental country that consists of a mountainous, peninsular mainland jutting out into the sea at the southern end of the Balkans, ending at the Peloponnese peninsula (separated from the mainland by the canal of the Isthmus of Corinth) and strategically located at the crossroads of Europe, Asia, and Africa. Due to its highly indented coastline and numerous islands, Greece has the 11th longest coastline in the world. Eighty percent of Greece consists of mountains or hills, making the country one of the most mountainous in Europe. Mount Olympus, the mythical abode of the Greek Gods, culminates at Mytikas peak the highest in the country. Western Greece contains a number of lakes and wetlands and is dominated by the Pindus mountain range.
Greece Travel Guide
Greece has an extremely large number of islands. The largest Greek island by area is Crete, located at the southern edge of the Aegean Sea. The second largest island is Euboea, which is separated from the mainland by the 60m-wide Euripus Strait, and is administered as part of the Central Greece region. After the third and fourth largest Greek Islands, Lesbos and Rhodes, the rest of the islands are two-thirds of the area of Rhodes, or smaller.
Greece Travel Guide
The Greek islands are traditionally grouped into the following clusters: The Argo-Saronic Islands in the Saronic gulf near Athens, the Cyclades, a large but dense collection occupying the central part of the Aegean Sea, the North Aegean islands, a loose grouping off the west coast of Turkey, the Dodecanese, another loose collection in the southeast between Crete and Turkey, the Sporades, a small tight group off the coast of Euboea, and the Ionian Islands, located to the west of the mainland in the Ionian Sea (one of these islands, Kythira, is off the southern tip of the Peloponnese Peninsula and part of the Attica region, but still considered part of the Ionian Islands, mainly because of historical reasons). There are also many islands, islets and rocks that surround the coast of Crete.
Greece Travel Guide
The climate of Greece is primarily Mediterranean, featuring mild, wet winters and hot, dry summers. This climate occurs at all coastal locations, including Athens, the Cyclades, the Dodecanese, Crete, the Peloponnese, the Ionian Islands and parts of the Central Continental Greece region. The Pindus mountain range strongly affects the climate of the country, as areas to the west of the range are considerably wetter on average (due to greater exposure to south-westerly systems bringing in moisture) than the areas lying to the east of the range (due to a rain shadow effect).
Greece Travel Guide
The mountainous areas of Northwestern Greece (parts of Epirus, Central Greece, Thessaly, Western Macedonia) as well as in the mountainous central parts of Peloponnese – including parts of the regional units of Achaea, Arcadia and Laconia – feature an Alpine climate with heavy snowfalls. The inland parts of northern Greece, in Central Macedonia and East Macedonia and Thrace feature a temperate climate with cold, damp winters and hot, dry summers with frequent thunderstorms.

Athens is the capital and largest city of Greece. Athens dominates the Attica region and is one of the world's oldest cities, with its recorded history spanning over 3,400 years, and its earliest human presence starting somewhere between the 11th and 7th millennia BC.[Classical Athens was a powerful city-state that emerged in conjunction with the seagoing development of the port of Piraeus, which had been a distinct city prior to its 5th century BC incorporation with Athens. A centre for the arts, learning and philosophy, home of Plato's Academy and Aristotle's Lyceum, it is widely referred to as the cradle of Western civilization and the birthplace of democracy, largely because of its cultural and political impact on the European continent, and in particular the Romans. In modern times, Athens is a large cosmopolitan metropolis and central to economic, financial, industrial, maritime, political and cultural life in Greece. In 2015, Athens was ranked the world's 29th richest city by purchasing power and the 67th most expensive[ in a UBS study.

Temple of Poseidon
The Ancient Greeks knew how to choose a site for a temple. At Cape Sounion, 70km south of Athens, the Temple of Poseidon stands on a craggy spur that plunges 65m to the sea.
Cape Sounion is noted for its Temple of Poseidon, one of the major monuments of the Golden Age of Athens.
The frieze's fragments that have survived, is believed they illustrated popular mythological themes of amazonomachy (or a battle between Centaurs and Lapiths), gigantomachy, and the deeds of Theseus. They were carved in white marble from Paros.
Made entirely of white marble, it was erected in the middle of the 5th century BC and built to honour Poseidon, God of the Sea. Built same year as the Parthenon – it is a vision of gleaming white columns. It is thought that the temple was built by Iktinos, the architect of the Temple of Hephaestus in Athens' Ancient Agora.
On a clear day you can see Kea, Kythnos and Serifos to the southeast, and Aegina and the Peloponnese to the west.
Sailors in ancient times knew they were nearly home when they saw the first glimpse of white, and views from the temple are equally impressive.
British poet Lord Byron was one of many who fell under its spell, composing poetry in its honour.
Byron's lines from Don Juan: 'Place me on Sunium’s marbled steep/Where nothing save the waves and I/May hear our mutual murmurs sweep.'
Byron was so impressed by Sounion that he carved his name on one of its iconic marble pillars.
When you visit Cape of Sounion you will be mesmerised by the blankets of blues, reds and oranges that engulf the temple as the sun descends into the sea.
I used timelapse & hyperlapse techniques for the film.

Temple of Poseidon - FULL VIDEO TOUR (Cape Sounion, Greece)
On our first day of landing into Athens, we drove directly down to Cape Souion to see the Temple of Poseidon! The area and views are beyond amazing! It was an interesting 40-50 mile drive from Athens (You'll see! lol) and very worth it!! The houses are very expensive in this part of Greece and it's a hidden paradise on the Aegean sea.
There is free parking at the temple, so no problems there! The temple is surrounded like a chain-link fence where by the main gate is closed during the night. However, you'll find many people hopping the fence at night and walking up to the temple (I wouldn't recommend it as a tourist!)
When we arrived, it was night time. There is a gift shop and cafe here and the cafe has an outdoor seating area which can be accessed 24/7. So we decided to crack open some ouzo and enjoy the lit-up temple at night! Bright and early the next day, we paid entry and visited the temple!
The temple of Poseidon was constructed in 444–440 BC, over the ruins of a temple dating from the Archaic period. It is perched above the sea at a height of almost 60 metres (200 ft). The design of the temple is a typical hexastyle, i.e., it had a front portico with six columns.[9] Only some columns of the Sounion temple stand today, but when intact it would have closely resembled the contemporary and well-preserved Temple of Hephaestus beneath the Acropolis, which may have been designed by the same architect.
As with all Greek temples, the Poseidon building was rectangular, with a colonnade on all four sides. The total number of original columns was 34: 15 columns still stand today. The columns are of the Doric Order. They were made of locally quarried white marble. They were 6.10 m (20 ft) high, with a diameter of 1 m (3.1 ft) at the base and 79 cm (31 inches) at the top.[10]
At the centre of the temple colonnade would have been the hall of worship (naos), a windowless rectangular room, similar to the partly intact hall at the Temple of Hephaestus. It would have contained, at one end facing the entrance, the cult image, a colossal, ceiling-height (6 metres (20 ft)) bronze statue of Poseidon.[11] Probably covered in gold leaf, it may have resembled a contemporary representation of the god, appropriately found in a shipwreck, shown in the figure above. Poseidon was usually portrayed carrying a trident, the weapon he supposedly used to stir up storms. On the longest day of the year, the sun sets exactly in the middle of the caldera of the island of Patroklos, the extinct volcano that lies offshore, suggesting astrological significance for the siting of the temple. The temple of Poseidon was destroyed in 399 by Emperor Arcadius.
Archaeological excavation of the site in 1906 uncovered numerous artifacts and inscriptions, most notably a marble kouros statue known as the Sounion Kouros[12] and an impressive votive relief,[13] both now in the Athens National Archaeological Museum.[14] A column from the temple can be seen in the British Museum.
Cape Sounion (Modern Greek: Aκρωτήριο Σούνιο, transliterated Akrotírio Soúnio, pronounced [akroˈtirʝo ˈsuɲo]; Ancient Greek: Ἄκρον Σούνιον, Άkron Soúnion; Venetian: Capo Colonne, Cape of Columns) is a promontory located 69 kilometres (43 mi) south-southeast of Athens, at the southernmost tip of the Attica peninsula in Greece.
Cape Sounion is noted as the site of ruins of an ancient Greek temple of Poseidon, the god of the sea in classical mythology. The remains are perched on the headland, surrounded on three sides by the sea. The ruins bear the deeply engraved name of English Romantic poet Lord Byron (1788–1823).
