Japan Travel: History, Happiness, Heart at Izumo Taisha, Izumo City, Shimane Prefecture, Japan
Japan Travel: History, Happiness, Heart at Izumo Taisha, Izumo City, Shimane Prefecture, Japan
【010 Shimane Izumo Taisha】
Subscribe link:
One of Japan’s oldest shrines, Izumo Grand Shrine, Izumo Taisha (出雲大社) lies in Izumo City, Shimane Prefecture. No one knows the exact date of when the shrine was constructed. However, the existence of the shrine was apparent in the early 700s according to Japan’s oldest chronicles.
Izumo Taisha’s main deity (kami) is the Okunininushi no Okami. According to legend, Okuninushi was creator of the land in which Japan lies as well as the ruler of Izumo. He also has another role, which is the deity of good relations and marriage. At Japanese shrines, before a prayer, we clap twice. However, at Izumo Taisha, we clap four times—twice for ourselves and twice for our partner, present or future.
The Kamiari Festival is held at Izumo Taisha every year, from the 10th to the 17th day of the 10th lunar month. During this period, it is said Shinto’s eight million deities from across Japan gather at Izumo Taisha. The 10th lunar month is known as Kamiarizuki (“month with deities”) in Izumo and Kannazuki (“month without deities”) elsewhere in Japan.
Izumo Taisha’s grounds are quite large and spacious. There are many torii gates and halls, that visitors can explore the grounds to see and experience the magnificence of this shrine.
Some places of special importance:
Matsu no Sando: walking north of the large wooden torii gate (entrance into the shrine), the road divides into 3 paths by the pine trees. Please do not use the center path, as it is said this path is reserved for the deities.
Shimenawa in Worship Hall (Haiden): as visitors enter the main shrine grounds, they will see a wooden structure with a huge sacred straw rope (shimenawa) hung across the structure. The shimenawa signifies the presence of a deity and separates divine space from the mortal world. Large shimenawa are a characteristic of this region, found also at other shrines in Izumo.
Main Hall (Honden): behind the worship hall, Honden is 24 meters tall. It is the tallest shrine building in Japan. The current structure, built in 1744, is constructed architecture style is called Taisha-zukuri. Taisha-zukuri is a purely Japanese style which predates the entry of Buddhism into Japan.
Jukusha: in the outer fence area there are two long wooden structures on both sides of the main sanctuary. Jukusha is where the deities meet when they gather for their yearly meeting.
Access Information:
Izumo Taisha is located in the outskirts of Izumo City, about one hour west of Matsue. Izumo's main railway station is called Izumoshi Station.
From Izumoshi Station
From the railway station, Izumo Taisha can be reached by either train or bus.
*By Train:
**Via Ichibata Railways. Transfer trains at Kawato Station. Disembark at Izumo Taisha-mae Station. The journey will take about 20 minutes and the one way fare is 490 yen.
From Izumo Taisha-mae station, it takes about 5 minutes on foot to the shrine.
*By Bus:
**Board the bus from bus stop number one. There is a bus departing the station every 30 minutes or so. The bus ride should take about 25 minutes and the cost is 520 yen one way.
From Matsue City
From Matsue, Izumo Taisha is most easily reached by Ichibata Railways:
*By Train:
**Board the train from Matsue Shinjiko Onsen Station. Transfer trains at Kawato Station. Disembark at Izumo Taisha-mae Station. The journey will take about 60 minutes and the one way fare is 810 yen. (Visitors have the option of purchasing a one day pass for unlimited usage of Ichibata trains for 1500 yen)
From Izumo Taisha-mae station, it takes about 5 minutes on foot to the shrine.
**For Japan Rail Pass holder, taking a JR train from Matsue to Izumoshi Station (25-40 minutes) may be better. For access information from Izumoshi Station, refer to the above “From Izumoshi Station” section.
Japan’s JS Izumo to guard U.S. navy ship for the first time - TomoNews
TOKYO — Japan’s aircraft carrier-like destroyer left Yokosuka Naval Base on Monday to escort a U.S. supply vessel. This deployment is a first for Japan’s navy as previous Japanese laws forbade such action.
Japan’s largest warship, the JS Izumo is 814 feet long and weighs 27,000 tons when fully loaded. It is shorter than China’s Liaoning aircraft carrier and USS George H.W. Bush.
The JS Izumo is armed with three Phalanx CIWS point defense guns and two SeaRAM last-ditch interceptor missiles. It normally carries seven SH-60J anti-submarine warfare helicopters.
For decades, Japan’s constitution forbade the country’s Self Defense Forces from rendering aid to allies. However, the country enacted new security legislation last March that expanded the scope of Self-Defense Forces’ overseas missions.

Japan's holiest Shrine | Cinematic Japan Travel Vlog: Izumo Shrine and Matsue Boat Tour (Day 4)
Our Japan Trip continued with another day in Matsue and the surrounding areas. Starting early in the morning, we took a tram to Izumo, a city which hosts Japan's oldest and most important shrine. Unfortunately, there wasn't a lot of explanation written in English and there weren't many foreign tourists around either, so it seemed like a mostly Japanese tourist destination. At Izumo Shrine, Juri and I also got our Omikuji, Japanese fortune papers, which you're supposed to get once per year and which give you a lot of personal information. Afterwards, we went to Inasa Beach, which has a shrine perched on a rock, overlooking the northern Japanese sea. After we made it back to Matsue, we took a boat tour alongside Matsue's many canals. An old lady was our guide and gave us information on the city, old buildings and history. However, since it was entirely in Japanese, it was a bit difficult to understand what she was saying. Our last stop was once again Matsue Castle before preparing for our next trip to the Oki Islands.

????All the Gods of Japan are here in Izumo Taisha! The Month with Gods????
11.9.2019
Hello again! Welcome or welcome back! The three of us got together again to join in on the Izumo Taisha ONLY celebration, which is, the Kamiarizuki / 神在月 or the Month with Gods, we will be explaining in the video (poor explanation unfortunately lol) what it is, but just to give you an idea before watching, The Month with Gods (Kamiarizuki) is celebrated only in Izumo City because Izumo is known to possibly have the older Japanese shrine which is the Izumo Taisha, every year, there is one month (October is actually the known month it, however this year it was celebrated in November), where the 8 million Gods of Japan all leave their designated shrines, to come here in Izumo Taisha.
While Izumo city celebrates the month with Gods or Kaminarizuki, the rest of Japan experience a Kannazuki / 神無月 or Month with no Gods.
I tried to make the video an Educational Vlog but I don't think it will deliver lol

Exploring the Japanese Countryside [Yahiko Village]
Located in central Niigata Prefecture and abutting the Sea of Japan, Yahiko Village is considered one of Japan’s most sacred areas. According to legend, the great grandson of Shinto Japan’s founding deity, Amaterasu-omikami, settled here. The god helped establish regional Echigo agriculture. Today, Yahiko Village is renowned for its rice, edamame, shiitake mushrooms and sake. Locally caught seafood is another delicious gourmet specialty. Major drawcards include Yahiko Shrine, Yahiko Park and Mount Yahiko (634 meters). The former is one of Japan’s most significant shrines. Stately cedar trees, mature maples, blushing cherry blossoms and cheery chrysanthemums can all be found on its premises. The summit of Mount Yahiko is accessible by hiking trails or ropeway. Take in sweeping views of Sado Island and the Sea of Japan coastline on a clear day. Any hiking should be followed by a soak in one of the town’s onsen or hot springs. Some are standalone. Others form part of traditional ryokan or inn lodgings. To reach Yahiko Village by train, take the JR Joetsu Shinkansen from Tokyo. Get off at Tsubame-sanjo Station and transfer to the JR Yahiko Line. Alternatively, travel from Niigata Station via the Echigo and Yahiko line, changing at Yoshida Station.
