Zagreb is the political and cultural heart of Croatia, an amiable capital city located at the intersection of Central, Eastern and Southern Europe and a city that holds many memories of the Danube Monarchy. Zagreb originated in the Middle Ages from two rival settlements on neighbouring hills, the bishop's seat of Kaptol which is dominated by its cathedral and the free city of Gradec which was its political centre. They both formed the city’s Upper Town. The cathedral dominates the Kaptol district, its two steeples towering above the old city. The city’s marvellous Botanical Garden contains an array of wonderful natural sights. It boasts ten thousand tree and plant varieties including alpine, Mediterranean, and the exotic. Small ponds with water plants are also included in the four point seven hectare gardens. An imposing arcaded facade forms the entrance to the Mirogoj Cemetery which is laid out as a park and is an artistic masterpiece. Here, leading sculptors built tombs for the country’s most famous personalities from the arts, culture and politics, including the grave of Franjo Tudjman. A narrow mountain road leads up to the Medvednica Nature Park, outside the city gates. The mediaeval Medvedgrad Fortress is a most striking and interesting attraction located in twenty three thousand hectares of natural landscape. Zagreb is a special city, unique, with a never-ending story, a city that has witnessed a thousand years and, due to its historic values, has become a European Capital Of Culture.

Our travels in Croatia brought us to Zagreb known for its lively street markets, vast green spaces, and varied architecture that spans numerous movements, we reached the capital and hit the ground running. In this video we’re going to show you some fun things to do in Zagreb, as well as share our favourite place for sampling the most delicious truffle dishes:
From the main square you have the Flower Market, and if you head up the steps, that leads to Zagreb’s Central Market.
Zagreb Cathedral is one the city’s main landmarks. This is the largest sacral building in the Gothic style southeast of the Alps, and it’s pretty easy to spot the spires wherever you are in the city.
Our walk through the Upper Town eventually lead us to Tkalčićeva. These days you’ll find a lively street lined with restaurants, cafes and bars.
We reached what may be the most memorable museum in the whole world: The Museum of Broken Relationships. The museum is a global crowd-sourced project that deals with heartbreak. Inside you’ll find curious objects with a corresponding story.
St. Mark’s Church bears the medieval coat of arms of Croatia, Dalmatia and Slavonia on the left-hand side, and the emblem of Zagreb on the right.
To enjoy city views of the Lower Town there are some great vantage points along the promenade.
On our way down from the Upper Town, we walked through Zagreb’s famed Stone Gate. Once the eastern gate into the medieval settlement now houses a small chapel.
Let’s take a break from all the sightseeing to introduce you to one of our favourite restaurants in Zagreb when it comes to truffle dishes
And craving more views of the city, we then went up Zagreb 360.
Known as the Green Horseshoe, this park was named after Milan Lenuci who came up with the idea of creating connected green spaces right in the downtown. The horseshoe is home to several museums, galleries and archives.
If you’re into hockey and you visit Zagreb during the season, you can catch a game in the city. We watched Medveščak Zagreb play.

The impressions of many foreigners who live in Zagreb, business people and tourists can be summed up in a single sentence: a large city which managed to stay romantic and safe. There are unlimited possibilities for visiting music and theatre events, art exhibitions, museums, sporting events and enjoying pleasant walks, interesting architecture, plentiful parks in the centre of the city, pedestrian zones and the atmosphere.
Zagreb is the city of international fairs, conventions, business meetings (Zagreb Fair and congresses), as well as sporting events. There are more than 6,000 beds in hotels, some of them belonging to world-famous hotel chains. The number of small and family-owned hotels and hostels is increasing. They all share the same level of professionalism and hospitality.
Place Featured:
Situated just below the hillside settlements of Kaptol and Gradec, it has served as the city’s commercial heart ever since 1641, when it was designated as a place where fairs could be held. Most of the buildings around the square date from the 19th century, and display a variety of architectural styles, from Biedermaier to Art Nouveau and Post-modernism. The square was Zagreb’s main marketplace and carried the name “Harmica” (Hungarian for “one thirtieth”), after the tax levied on the goods that were sold here. In 1848 the square was officially renamed in honour of Ban (“Governor”) Josip Jelačić. After World War II the name of the square was changed to “Republic Square”, only to return to its previous title in 1990.
The Zagreb Cathedral on Kaptol is a Roman Catholic institution and not only the tallest building in Croatia, but also the most monumental sacral building in Gothic style southeast of the Alps
Tkalciceva Street is a beautiful street of Zagreb lined with restaurants and cafes. At that same place once flowed a river that separated the districts of Kaptol and Gradec.
This 13th-century church is one of Zagreb's most emblematic buildings. Its colourful tiled roof, constructed in 1880, has the medieval coat of arms of Croatia, Dalmatia and Slavonia on the left side, and the emblem of Zagreb on the right.

Amazing day in Zagreb | Croatia
I was not expecting to have such a beautiful day in Zagreb, Croatia. I ended up in the Museum of Broken Relationships.
Croatia is a beautiful country and today I was visiting Zagreb. I have heard many good things about Zagreb so I was curious to see what this city had to offer in one day.
I walked around the city of Zagreb for a couple of hours as I found out that the city of Zagreb is indeed beautiful as everybody told me. I went to the Dolac Market where I could find people getting their groceries done.
We also used the Funicular to go up in the city, the Funicular is a very very old way of transportation in Zagreb city centre. If you have a chance to use it, go for it, and when you get up there don't forget to look back because the view is amazing!
Then I went to the Cathedral of Zagreb and near the Anamorphosis by Etian, and in the end of the day I went to a museum that I was very curious to see which was the Museum of Broken Relationships, yes, you read it well, broken relationships.
In the end I really spent an amazing day in Zagreb, Croatia.

Croatia came 2nd in the football world cup and 550k people celebrated in Ban Jelačić square, Zagreb! Before the cathedral...⬇ Click 'Show More' ⬇ Learn to travel full-time:
While Zagreb was home to the football ceremony, and Ban Jelacic square was the end place, it does sound like it was 550,000 people in total came out for the drive from the airport... so sure, not all those people were crammed in here around the square but cool nonetheless.
Just up from the Ban Jelacic square is the Zagreb cathedral, which is the tallest building in Croatia. Inside the church is stunning, as you would expect, but I didnt want to film too much for this travel vlog. Partly because it feels a bit sacred, partly because people are in there having private time and praying. Regardless, if you visit Ban Jelacic square it's worth popping up and seeing the cathedral as well!
It's a shame we werent a few weeks earlier to be around Croatia during the World Cup, but to be in the square and imagine the ceremony was cool either way.

Zagreb (Greek : Ζάγκρεμπ) is the capital and the largest city of Croatia. It is located in the northwest of the country, along the Sava river, at the southern slopes of the Medvednica mountain. Zagreb lies at an elevation of approximately 122 m (400 ft) above sea level. The estimated population of the city in 2018 is 809,773. Zagreb metropolitan area population is slightly above 1.1 million inhabitants and it makes approximately a quarter of a total population of Croatia.

- - Croatia is, we like to say, a country that can satisfy all the visitors, and all the tasters, and even though still, some people perceive it as just sun and the beach, it actually offers much more. Not only as in the main season, in the pre and post season, and we as a Tourist Board tend to promote basically, mainly pre and post season. In terms of the activities you can do, there is wonderful cuisine, which is not that well known abroad but basically have like really good quality ingredients, and lots of amazing wines. We have over 60 indigenous Croatian wine varieties and basically where ever you travel in Croatia you can get a really delicious wine. Really good sea food, fresh fish, we have truffles, both in winter and summer. Some of the most awarded olive oils, Istria won, I think, third year in a row, the award for the best olive oil region in the world. So these are all the things that some people are not well aware of, but for people who are into food, Croatia is a great place to go. It is also great for active holidays. So if you're into sailing, hiking, cycling, kayaking, climbing, there is pretty much any sport that can be imagined, you can do it in Croatia. Even the skiing, many people don't know that we have a few ski resorts, one just next to Zagreb. It's also a good place for culture lovers, with all it's amazing churches, and galleries and museums, lots of national parks. So yeah, basically we can cater to most of the visitors. I would particularly mention Zagreb, which is still, lots of people don't take into account as a city break destination, but it's a really lovely city. We have really amazing architecture, it reminds a bit of Vienna, with that kind of style of Viennese architecture. Has a great like, night life, very good restaurants and bars, has lots of events, pretty much any time of the year you come, there will be some, something going on. It also has a mountain next by, where you can go hiking in summer or skiing in winter, and there is a wine region just next by, so if you come for a long weekend, you can even visit that.

Tkalčićeva Street (Croatian: Tkalčićeva ulica, formally: Ivan Tkalčić Street, Ulica Ivana Tkalčića) is a street in the Zagreb, Croatia city center.[1] Extending from the vicinity of the central Ban Jelačić Square to its northern end at the Little Street (Croatian: Mala ulica), the street flows between the Gornji Grad in the west and Nova Ves in the east. The street is officially within the Gornji Grad - Medveščak city district, constituting the former August Cesarec commune (abolished in 1994). According to the 2001 Croatian census, the street has 1,591 inhabitants.[2]
Centuries before the today's street emerged, the route of Tkalčićeva Street was covered by the Medveščak creek.[3] Medveščak (at that time also called Crikvenik or Cirkvenik) had been the center of Zagreb industry since the early days of the city, spawning numerous watermills. The watermills caused the development of Zagreb industry, leading in turn to the construction of Zagreb's first cloth, soap, paper and liquor factories and, later, animal skin industry.[3] The watermills were often the subject of feuds between the twin cities, Kaptol and Gradec.[4] A 1392 peace treaty forbade construction of new watermills along the shared city border, between today's southern end of Medvedgradska Street and Ban Jelačić Square, leaving only two mills within the city. Both mills were owned by a Cistercian monastery.[4] However, they were both razed during the 1898 covering of the creek.[5]

Although both sides of the creek had been inhabited before, the 1898 covering left a full-scale street, which was aptly named Ulica Potok (English: Creek street).[6] Most of the houses were dated to 18th or 19th century and the street was surfaced with gravel from Sava River excavated in Trnje.[3] Around the middle of the 20th century it was modernized and paved with asphalt. The creek-based industry was quickly transformed into small businesses and stores[3] and the skin industry stopped working in 1938.[citation needed]
According to several records, the transformation of Medveščak creek valley was orchestrated in 1900 by Milan Lenucci, an architect. In 1908, Viktor Kovačić displayed some of his ideas about Ulica Potok in his studies of Gornji Grad, Kaptol and other city neighborhoods. In 1913, Ulica Potok's name is changed to Tkalčićeva Street in honor of the 19th century Zagreb historian Ivan Tkalčić, who was from nearby Nova Ves.[6]
At the turn of the 20th century, prostitution was legal. In Zagreb it was advertised as a tourist attraction and contributed to the city's economy. Tkalčićeva Street was the main centre for brothels. At one stage every other building was a bordello.[7] To open a brothel, the owner had to register at the town hall and received a licence. The licence required the brothel to be well run and provide a quality service. The women working in the brothels had to have a twice weekly medical examination. Brothels were not allowed to advertise their presence, but a discrete, uncommonly coloured lantern was allowed to be placed outside.[8]
The best known brothel, and most expensive, was the Kod Zelene Lampe (Green Lantern’s). The street's brothels continued to operate until WW2.

Hai teman-teman, setelah jalan-jalan di Jepang di tahun 2018 lalu, kali ini aku jalan-jalan ke negara-negara Balkan dan Italia seperti Croatia, Slovenia, dan Venice.
