Top 10 Things to do and see in Bern, Switzerland
Switzerland is not just about Chocolates and cheese, this country has a lot to offer. Today we are going to explore the Swiss Capital, a city with a great antiquity and full of history. old buildings and the magical town rivers.
So come and join me as we are going to explore the amazing city.
This is Aldrin Travels, and welcome to Bern, Switzerland. In this video, i am going to show my top 10 things to do and see in the Swiss Capital.
From its historical sites and untouched buildings down to its amazingl town river.
Lets start with the city’s largest reform cathedral, Bern Minster. or in German, Münster which means, BIG Church. This huge building was constructed in 1421 in an amazing Gothic Style. Now ill take you to the east side of the building, where you can relax, play with your kids, and take some selfie with a view of the Kirchenfeld Bridge. One of the best way to see the entire city is to visit the Cathedral’s Tower. It takes 344 steps to go up, sounds a bit tiring, but its all worth it , the view is just absolutely breathtaking. The vantage point of the tower allows you to enjoy the amazing panorama of the Bernese Landscapes
On your way down, don’t forget to visit the Bell Chamber where you can see four of the seven Bells of the Cathedral. Did you know that Albert Einsteiin rented this place for 2 productive years? From 1903 to 1905, in the street of Kramgasse 49, Einstein and his wife Meliva have lived here together with their son Hans Albert.
You get to see the living space of the family, the old furnitures, pictures hanging on the wall, and even their son’s old cradle. You might be surprise, but Bern has over 100 fountains, and eleven of which are still active.
The fountains that has been part of Bern’s water supply, used to be a meeting places where people gossiped, washed, and fetched clean drinking water. Now, lets escape the hustle and bustle of the city, and lets take a walk towards the town river side. , The llong stretch path of Schwellenmätteli is a perfect place for joggers, walk with your dogs, and might as well, picnic.
A visit to the Bearpark would be a great experience for the entire family. This place has a great significance in the city. Another way to relax is to visit Bern's Rosegarden. This is perfect place for an entire family. The view of the entire city is purely spectacular. There are playgrounds, restaurant, and even a mini library.
Families and friends can both enjoy the view of the river as well the bears playing around and taking their bath. The clock tower or better known as Zeitglockturm is one of Bern’s most remarkable site. Back in the 13th century this tower served as guard tower and prison.
This major tourist attraction is one of UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site. And finally, the CITY of Bern itself as part of UNESCO World of Heritage sites.
The Swiss Capital has so many alluring characteristics. Its history and antiquity that captivates millions of tourist across the globe, and its beautiful and amazing atmosphere that keeps me coming back.

The Virtual Tourist walks around Bern Main Train Station Switzerland
Easy Travels in a Modern Swiss Train Station
I’m in Luzern, at one of Switzerland’s many modern train stations. Traveling here, it occurs to me that a big part of the fun of being in Europe is just enjoying the everyday mechanisms of life over here: using ticket machines, jumping on trams, pushing buttons...just doing stuff. I’m generally pretty slow when it comes to getting things from machines, but lately, I’ve been impressed by how easy it is, across Europe, to get a ticket without waiting in line. (They’ve thought of everything — language barriers, different currencies, American credit cards — and it all works beautifully.) As you can see in this fun clip, ticket machines and train stations are getting really slick.

Interlaken, Bern, Thun, Switzerland
Interlaken in the heart of the Alps and Bern, at 8:42 are two of the great destinations of Switzerland presented in this practical guide, along with the historic city of Thun at 25:10 in the travel video.
Please subscribe:
Switzerland playlist Interlaken makes a perfect home base for exploring the beautiful mountains all around the central region of Switzerland, offering many hotels, restaurants and shops, and wonderful train and bus connections to get up to the mountain sites. Tourists have been coming to Interlaken and the area since about 1800 when it was first popularized by some romantic painters and then tourism really increased in the 1890s and early 1900s with the opening of railway service.
Some of the world's most spectacular mountain scenery is waiting for you just outside of Interlaken in the heart of the Swiss Alps. In this movie we’re focusing on how to get the most out of your visit to the town. For the more adventurous you can go paragliding. Or for something less adventurous you can just rent a bicycle and go peddle around. There's a lot to see in the Interlaken area. The town itself is relatively flat and you can peddle through the shopping areas and up into the residential zones.
A main activity in town is shopping – all sorts of souvenirs for sale, clothing, you can buy some hiking gear. It's a great place for backpacks, for boots, hats, clothing of all kinds, walking sticks and a T-shirt that says Interlaken.
There's not much of a pedestrian zone that's free of automobiles here but they do have one little lane that's for pedestrians. But the rest of town is very friendly for walking around, the sidewalks are wide and there's always things to look at and things to do.
The great meadow forms a major park, beautifully landscaped and kept in a semi-natural state with flowers and trees and the meadow along one side and grand hotels on the other.
If you’re a gambler there is a casino like there is in most Swiss towns and it's an elegant place. It’s part of the Kursal complex which for 100 years has been a cultural center of the city, set in a beautiful park with fountains and flowers.
Another major attraction worth seeing near Interlaken is the city of Bern the political capital of Switzerland and it's just one hour away by train.
The Bern train station is right next to the old town so your walk through the historic zone begins the moment you arrive. The main street proceeds directly from the front of the train station right through the historic center. It's one street about ten blocks long, but it changes name several times. By the station and it's the Spitalgasse, then it becomes the Marktgasse, then the Kramgasse, then the Gerechtigkeitsgasse. Today, it's the main street of Bern, as it has been for centuries. This road is remarkable, not only for the ancient buildings and arcades that cover both sides, but for the spectacular Renaissance fountains down the middle. Today it's a popular shopping street with surprisingly modern shop interiors, and there's a slight curve with a long line of Baroque façades that combine to produce one of Bern's most impressive streetscapes. This Kramgasse and its buildings are part of the UNESCO World Heritage site that encompasses the entire old city of Bern – a very impressive honor that UNESCO has designated all of the historic area as a World Heritage Site.
At the end of town across the river they have their famous bear pits. In recent years the government has greatly expanded this bear habitat to make it really a pleasant place for the bears to live.
Another important building is the Gothic cathedral with the nation's highest church tower at 328 feet, which you may climb for a bird’s eye view of the historic center. Construction of the cathedral began in 1421 in the Gothic style. It is a three-nave basilica without a transept or aisles, 85 m long and 34 m wide – it is quite huge. The walls outside are supported by flying buttresses and the majority of the building is constructed with local sandstone, and bricks were used for the ceiling for the vaults.
On the train ride back to Interlaken it is easy to get off at the picturesque city of Thun and spend a few hours walking around, enjoying the special ambience of this place, with a river running through the middle of the Old Town and a unique two-level sidewalk on the main pedestrian street. Then return to Interlaken and continue our exploration of this great city.
This video is part of a longer series that we're presenting all about Switzerland, including Lucerne, Zürich, Zermatt, Lugano, Locarno, and a lot of beautiful mountaintops scenery to share with you.

Rome, Florence, Venice, Lucerne, Paris, London by train
Rome to London by train, featuring the best of Italy, Switzerland, France and England. Jump to the different cities or watch it all: Rome at 2:34; Florence at 8:43; Venice at 16:53; Lucerne at 22:42; Paris at 27:50; London at 34:10; Comments at 44:39
Rome highlights include lunch at Campo dei Fiori and a walking tour to the Pantheon, Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, Vatican Museum and St. Peters, best of Europe.
Florence is always listed in the world’s top-ten places to visit because of the Renaissance tradition we still see in the architecture, and the overall beauty of the city, not to mention great restaurants. Our walking tour with local guide brings us to the Duomo, Piazza della Signoria and across the Arno River to Oltrarno. We also enjoy steak at il Porcospino, a favorite restaurant, with a most friendly waiter, Franco.
Venice is the city of dreams, a place like no other, with water for streets and boats for cars. Our several walking tours bring us into the heart of town including: Rialto, San Marco, the Basilica, hidden restaurants, and of course, a gondola ride.
Lucerne is an ideal town to visit on your trip through Switzerland, with a lovely pedestrian zone, historic buildings in the typical style, waterfront cafes and views, and nearby mountains including Titlis, which we ascend in this journey.
Paris, perhaps the world’s most beautiful city, including: TGV arrival, walk to the Opera, Chartier dinner, stroll to Rue Montorgueil, open-top bus tour, Versailles, the Louvre, Latin Quarter and more…
London, capital of England, is our globe-trotting filmmaker’s favorite city, and this summary demonstrates why this city is so compelling. We bring you all over the center of town, including Soho, Covent Garden, Regent Street, Oxford Street, Burlington Arcade, Fortnum & Mason, Changing the Guard, open-top bus tour, Inns of Court, The City and the Tower of London.
Comments: An ideal Europe trip should include the major cities of London, Paris and Rome, along with a look at Switzerland in Lucerne, and the other greatest of Italian places, Florence and Venice. We summarize the journey with comments from our travelers about their favorites and general feelings about the trip, travelling by train and staying in each city for several days.

World's Most Beautiful Railway - The Bernina Express
Shortly after the construction of the Gotthard tunnel, Switzerland pulled off another pioneering achievement: the construction of the Thusis - St. Moritz railway line between 1899 and 1903. This opened the Upper Engadine to tourists. The Rhaetian Railway still passes over the same bridges and through the same loop tunnels. A still greater challenge was the subsequent construction of the Bernina Railway. No other railway in the world overcomes such steep gradients and winds through such steep curves without the help of a cogwheel.

How to get to town from Zurich Airport by train
This video shows you how to go to the city centre from Zurich Airport. The airport is served by frequent train services by Swiss Federal Railways (SBB CFF FFS), the tickets of which can be bought as soon as you reach the baggage reclaim hall. A single Second Class train ticket costs only CHF 6.80. Simply go straight on when you enter the Arrival Hall and you will reach the Airport Centre, where the train station can be found in the basement.
There are no ticket gates in the station, but there will be inspectors on the train, so be sure to have a ticket with you. Before boarding, you should validate your ticket by folding it once and sticking it into the orange machines in the platforms. Double decker trains are used, and will arrive at the Zurich HB (Hauptbahnhof, Main Station) in around 10 minutes. This has got to be the fastest and most cost effective way to get into town at an expensive city like Zurich.

This will be the first part of this detailed travel series of Bern as I have covered most of the tourist attractions which several important explanations about the history of the city. Watch this video to get much important info about travelling in Bern city.
In this video, the main attractions are
1) The old town or inner city of the Bern which is UNESCO World Heritage site. In the next videos, I will walk along the street to give you more info about the old town.
2) The shaded arcade of the old town
3) Natural History Museum.
My journey details are the following:
18th July, I took a bus from Grenoble to Bern which was 22 Euros. This was the cheapest option available. I took the return ticket on 21st July which was 16 Euros. I booked an Airbnb for 3 days in 8012 INR or 100 Euros. Which was cheaper than any hostel. Plus this Airbnb room was very comfy and the owner was great. But this Airbnb was for solo travellers. So if you are travelling alone, then you can opt for this one. I can not post the details of the room here, so if anyone needs the details, please send an email to shantamoyguha@gmail.com.
Total expense:
Travelling from Grenoble and return - 38 Euros. (You might be travelling from another part of the world. So it depends on the itinerary.
Stay - 8000 INR or100 Euros (for 3 days)
Food and other costs - 60 Franc or 54 Euros
Total 154 Euros for stay and food for 3 days
As I have covered most of the places on foot, so I managed to save the local transport cost. But if you take day pass it is a bit costly. Go to the tourist office near the Bern railway station and ask them. Or check in this link

Switzerland
I had incredible weather for my twelve night journey through Switzerland. This video begins with me landing at the Zurich Airport.
I spend the first four nights of the trip in Zurich and take several day trips from there.
On day one I spend some time in Zurich before my day trip to points East. My first stop is in the small town of Rapperswil, then there is a scenic drive through the countryside and the excursion concludes at Heidiland.
Road trip number two takes me into the heart of the Swiss Alps. I visit Lungerersee Lake, Aare Gorge, Grimsel Pass, Furka Pass, Rhone Glacier, Devil's Bridge, Suworow Monument and the William Tell Monument.
My final road trip from Zurich took me north to Rhine Falls.
Next is was a scenic train ride to St. Moritz where I spent the night at a small Swiss hotel. From there I took another scenic train ride, this one was on the Bernina Express.
The next day was an incredible all-day rail journey on the famous Glacier Express to Zermatt. The train is described as the world's slowest express train.
I spent two nights in car-free Zermatt. The highlight of which was the spectacular cable car trip up the Klein Matterhorn. The views of the Matterhorn were breathtaking on this crystal clear day. I also spent some time walking through the charming Swiss town.
After changing trains in Visp it was on to Geneva for one night. Here we had a nice tour of this metropolitan city.
Next I took the scenic Golden Pass train to Interlaken. In Interlaken I took the Jungfrau Railway to the highest railway station in Europe located just below the mighty peaks of Eiger, Jungfrau and Mönch. This trip was incredible.
After changing trains in the capital city of Bern, I arrived in Lucerne for the final four nights of the trip. Lucerne is a perfect place to stay. The city couldn't be more pictureesque.
In Lucerne I enjoyed a Swiss folklore show, rode the funicular and tramway to the top of Mount Stanserhorn, took a horse-drawn carriage ride through the Swiss countryside, rode the cable car to the top of Mount Pilatus, rode the world's steepest railway down from Mount Pilatus, took a boat ride across Lake Lucerne and walked across the historic Chapel Bridge in the city's Old Town.
Lastly the trip concludes with my flight out of Zurich. I got a particularly nice view of the airport during takeoff.
