21 Most Incredible Places to Visit in Colombia

Most Incredible Places to Visit in Colombia
Cartagena
Let's start with the most obvious places, Cartagena, since it is Colombia's #1 tourist destination, and for pretty good reason. This old, walled city draws visitors through its colorful corridors, past exotic fruit vendors and sucks you in.
Tayrona National Park
Tayrona National Natural Park is probably the crown jewel of Colombia's national park system, an ecological paradise where palm-tree lined white sand beaches tuck up against crystalline blue waters.
Cabo de la Vela in La Guajira
For unforgettable beaches that are far less touristy than those in Cartagena or Tayrona, you should make a point to head to Cabo de la Vela along the Guajira region.
El Cocuy
For a total change of scenery you can (slowly, thanks to the high altitude) make your way to El Cocuy, located near the border of Venezuela, high in the Andes mountains.
San Gil
San Gil is located near the big city of Bucaramanga, and it remains one of my all-time favorite mid-size towns. San Gil is known as the adventure sports capital of Colombia, thanks to the many fun outdoor activities available in the area.
Villa de Leyva
Ville de Leyva is located a few hours from Bogota, and it is among the best preserved colonial towns in Colombia, with very little in the way of development over the past 400 years.
The Salt Cathedral of Zipaquira
Perhaps among the most unique churches in the world, the Salt Cathedral of Zipaquira is a Catholic church built inside the tunnels of an underground salt mine, more than 200 meters underground.
Bogota
Bogota is the large and bustling capital city, a place that can be somewhat chaotic and overwhelming, but nonetheless is worth visiting as Colombia's most cosmopolitan city, filled with arts, culture, entertainment, food, and much more.
Caño Cristales
Caño Cristales is a unique natural attraction known as the red river or the river of seven colors, due to the phenomenon of naturally occurring algae during certain times of the year which turns the river into unreal colors.
Amazonas
Most visitors to Colombia explore only a tiny fraction of Colombia and never make it over the Andes to Los Llanos (the plains) and the Amazon. Again, this is a place that you need to fly to in order to visit, as there are no roads that will take you to Leticia.
San Andres & Providencia
Finally, the last of my recommended places to visit in Colombia that involves flying, is a trip to the idyllic Caribbean islands of San Andes and Providencia. These two islands are actually located closer to Nicaragua than Colombia, but are nonetheless part of Colombia.
Medellin
Medellin at first blush isn't the prettiest city (although the surrounding landscape most certainly is) but it is a place that beats with life, energy, and rejuvenation.
Guatape
Not too far outside of Medellin, you'll find the cute little town of Guatape with colorfully painted buildings and a plethora of things to do in this pleasant little tourist town.
Cali
Cali is often overlooked compared to Cartagena, Medellin, and Bogota, but it has its own interesting vibe and story... For one, this is the salsa dancing capital of Colombia, so if that's on your list at all, then you've got to come to Cali.
Tatacoa Desert
Crossing back over one of the cordillera mountain ranges from Cali, you will find the intriguing Tatacoa Desert, just north of Neiva. Here you will find what we usually call badlands in English, where strangely colored desert formations lay out before you.
San Agustin
South of Tatacoa, the landscape turns from desert to jungle, where you will find the town of San Agustin. The principle draw here, beyond the waterfalls and beautiful landscapes, is the San Agustin Archeological Park.
Popayan
The white city of Colombia was a huge surprise for me, and is certainly among my top favorite mid-size cities... Arguably even more attractive then some of the more famous colonial cities like Barichara or Villa de Leyva.
The Coffee Axis
The Coffee Axis, or Coffee Triangle consists of the area surrounding the three cities of Manizales, Armenia, and Pereira. This is where the majority of the Colombia's top coffee is cultivated.
Los Nevados
Los Nevados is another one of the top national parks in Colombia, which rivals El Cocuy in terms of the mountainous terrain and snowcapped peaks.
Valle de Cocora
Perhaps one of the most unique and impressive sights in Colombia is the Valle de Cocora, where wax palms stretch high into the area above the verdant green ground.
Las Lajas
Finally, my last recommendation in the top places to visit in Colombia is one that sits practically on the border with Ecuador in the far south... The Las Lajas Sanctuary.
Trip Bogota airport to La Candelaria at downtown, low cost transport by Bus
I hope this video help you plan your next trip to Bogota, Colombia South America, because it shows you how to get a low cost transport from the Bogota airport to La Candelaria neighborhood, which have the most tourist attractions and things to do in Bogota along with many hostel and hotels of the city.
This guide works if the things to do in your trip includes staying at a hotel at La Candelaria or if you only have a long layover at Bogota, can happens with Avianca's Airlines flights, in which case what to do depends of the available time, one option is go to a near mall, Gran Estacion, or with more time go all the way to downtown and have a better taste of Bogota.
If you are in a party of several people think about the option of take a taxi cab from the airport, is cheap compared to other cities, that transport will cost to you like U$10-12 USD to the old city, La Candelaria area.
What I don't recommend is to rent a car, the traffic here is hard sometimes, the car rental rates are high plus high gas (petrol) prices, but, if you need you'll find car rentals counters inside the airport building.
So, THE GUIDE: when you clear immigration and customs you'll be at the beginning of the video right at entrance number five, get out of the building and you'll see the airport taxis and the representatives of hotel's shuttle buses, turn to your left and walk to the bus stop which is between gates 7 and 8, the bus schedule is like 7-10 minutes frequency and the idea is get a Green Bus with the 16-14 number which is going to the Portal El Dorado, this bus make a few stops before finishing the 2 kms trip to the portal.
Once at the portal buy a card ($3.000 pesos USD $1.5) and put some money on it, each ticket cost like $0.85 USD so do the math, find the ** J6 bus ** going to UNIVERSIDADES Station, this bus make a stop in every station, so enjoy the view.
Going to Gran Estación Mall:
The easiest way for a low cost transport to Gran Estacion mall is taking the M86 bus right where you take the green 16-14 bus, the trick here is that you need to buy the card prior the trip, ask inside the airport building where to buy Tu Llave card for the bus. Or you can take the green bus get the same J6 bus an leave the system at Salitre el Greco station.
If you keep on ride with this J6 bus in 15-25 minutes more you´ll be at Universidades station, this station is connected with Las Aguas station, from las Aguas you can walk anywhere in la Candelaria, avoid this at night, like your hostel or the Plaza de Bolivar square and other tourist attractions and things to do at the old city.
And that's how to go to the Bogota old city or downtown from the airport right after leaving you flight with Delta airlines, Avianca, Spirit, Aeromexico, Copa, etc. Know you know what to do at a low cost.
Enjoy and leave your comments.

Sail the Caribbean Sea, El Pico The Peak in Providencia, Old Providence S1E7
Stevie and I leave the boat to hike up the highest mountain in Providencia, Colombia, a.k.a. Old Providence. To our surprise we found a well marked and maintained trail. It was as high quality as you would find as in any U.S. national park, but we only saw one other couple hiking the trail. Compare that to the 1,000s that hike Diamondhead in Oahu every day. The views at the top of El Pico in Providencia, The Peak', were magnificient. You must do this hike if you visit! If you can walk a 5K, you should be up for this challenge. Just take lots of water!
The El Pico, The Peak, hike begins is in the Bottom House neighborhood of Providencia. It is almost on the opposite side of the town and ferry dock.
It probably takes about two hours up and one hour down. Give yourself plenty of daylight. (You could kill yourself in the dark.) There is no guard rail at the end and the path is narrow. We did not have a guide and I don't think one is necessary. It is better to hike it when its dry otherwise the path will be muddy.

1.Los Cristianos is a town in Spain with a population of 21,235 (2017), situated on the south coast of the Canary Island of Tenerife. Located in the municipality of Arona between the cone of the mountain Chayofita and the greater mountain Guaza. The town centre is around the Los Cristianos bay, but is rapidly expanding inland with modern development. The town is a popular tourist resort and includes a ferry port.
2. Puerto de la Cruz is a city and municipality in the northern part of the island of Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain. It was formerly known by its English translation, Port of the Cross, although now it is known in all languages by its Spanish name. It is located on the north coast, 4 km (2 mi) northwest of La Orotava, and 30 km (19 mi) west of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The TF-5 motorway passes through the municipality. In Spanish the inhabitants are known as Portuenses. With an area of 8.73 km2 (3 sq mi), the municipality is the smallest in Tenerife.
3.Siam Park is a water park in Costa Adeje, a coastal suburb in Tenerife, Canary Islands. Siam Park features a Siamese theme, and claims to be the most spectacular water attraction in Europe.[2] The park was opened by the Princess of Thailand Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. The principal owners are Wolfgang Kiessling and his son Christoph] A second park is planned for the neighbouring island of Gran Canaria.
4.Loro Parque (Spanish for parrot park) or 'Loro Park' is a 13.5-hectare (33-acre) zoo on the outskirts of Crossport or Puerto de la Cruz on Tenerife, Spain where it houses an extensive and diverse reserve of animal and plant species. The park was conceived as a paradise for parrots and has developed over the years into one of the biggest attractions of the Canary Islands, with over 40 million visitors.[1] The park keeps orcas, which has attracted criticism from some organisations.[2] and led to the zoo being boycotted by major travel agents including TUI Group (Thomson) and Thomas Cook.
5.Teide National Park (Spanish: Parque nacional del Teide, pronounced [ˈpaɾke naθjoˈnal de ˈtei̯.ðe]) is a national park located in Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain).
The national park is centered on Mount Teide, the highest mountain of Spain (3,718 meters high) in addition, the highest volcano in the Atlantic Ocean islands and the third highest volcano in the world from its base in the ocean floor (7.500 meters high). Its national park status was passed on 22 January 1954, making it the third oldest national park in Spain. Pico Viejo, also included within the national park limits, is the second highest volcano in the Canary Islands with its 3,135 m peak. Mount Teide and Pico Viejo are the only two peaks in the Canary islands rising above the 3,000 m level.
6.The Playa de Las Teresitas is a beach north of the village of San Andrés municipality of Santa Cruz de Tenerife in Tenerife, Spain.
Originally the beach consisted of mostly rocks and a small strip of black sand. It was divided into three distinct parts that had different names: Tras la Arena which was the original, Los Moros in the middle, and finally the area bounded by the ravine of Las Teresas. In 1973, 270,000 tons of white sand was shipped from Spanish Sahara (now Western Sahara, part of the Sahara Desert) to create an artificial beach of white sand. Two piers and a kilometer long breakwater located 150 meters from the beach was constructed to prevent waves from carrying the sand out to the sea. The project cost 50 million pesetas and in addition 400 million pesetas in 1998 when another 2,800 tonnes sand from Sahara was added to replenish the sand lost in the beach's 25 first years of existence.
7.Los Gigantes is a resort town in the Santiago del Teide municipality on the west coast of the Canary Island Tenerife. Its main feature are the giant rock formations, Acantilados de Los Gigantes, that rise from the sea to a height of 500-850 metres (1,640–2,625 ft) after which the town has been named. Los Gigantes means The Giants.
