You might think Louisiana would be called The Jazz State or even The Gumbo State - but it's nicknamed after its state bird, The Pelican State. The pelican is right at home on the bayou, and the natural beauty of this state beckons. But don't forget to visit New Orleans, the birthplace of jazz.

다운타운인 프렌치쿼터에는 이국적인 유럽풍의 건물들을 볼 수 있었다. 이는 뉴올리언스가 과거 프랑스와 스페인의 식민지였다가 1803년 루이지애나가 프랑스로부터 매입해 미국의 영토가 된 독특한 역사를 가지고 있기 때문이다. 바로 이런 비미국적인 풍경들이 수많은 관광객들을 불러들이는 가장 큰 매력이기도 하다. 프렌치쿼터에서 미시시피 강을 마주하는 중심에 위치한 잭슨 광장, 미국의 전쟁 영웅이자 제 7대 대통령인 앤드류 잭슨의 이름을 따라 명명되었다고 한다. 그래서인지 광장 중앙에서 그의 기마상을 만날 수 있다. 프랑스와 스페인 통치 시대에는 피비린내 나는 처형장이었던 곳이지만 지금은 평화로운 광장으로 뉴올리언스 시민들에겐 한가로이 시간을 보낼 수 있는 대표적인 휴식공간이다. 주말이면 잭슨광장 주변에는 많은 예술인들이 모여 든다. 특히 수많은 화가들은 자기만의 독특한 색채와 화법의 작품들을 가지고 나와 대중들에게 선보이는데 아마도 이 화가들에겐 잭슨 광장이 자신의 실력을 뽐 낼 수 있는 최고의 갤러리인 듯싶다. 나는 도무지 이해할 수 없는 낙서인 듯 한 작품을 팔고 있는 거리의 화가를 만났다. “이 작품은 ‘제퍼슨 스플래시’라고 하며, 제가 직접 창작한 스타일인데 페인트 드로잉 기법으로 이미지가 완성되죠.” “가까이서 보시면 페인트가 사방으로 튄 것 같지만, 뒤로 물러서서 이 각도에서 보시면 이미지가 훅 튀어나옵니다.” 여러분은 보이시나요? 설명을 듣고 다시 보니 낙서 같은 그림 속에서 악기를 연주하는 사람의 겨우 이미지를 찾을 수 있었다. 전시와 판매를 위해 시청의 허가를 받아야 함은 물론이고 주말이면 좋은 자리를 얻기 위해 새벽 3시에 나와 준비해야하는 힘든 일이지만 이들에게는 이 공간을 통해 얻을 수 있는 의미가 있다고 한다.

The Cabildo: History of New Orleans
The Cabildo took its name from the governing body who met there — the Illustrious Cabildo, or city council. This was the site of the Louisiana Purchase transfer ceremonies in 1803, and continued to be used by the New Orleans city council until the mid 1850s.
On the second floor is an outstanding exhibit on the birth of Rock 'N Roll in New Orleans.

30th April 1803: The Louisiana Purchase
France agreed to sell 828,000 square miles of territory that stretched from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains, and which doubled the size of the United States. Although the land transfer went on to include a vast area that now forms part of fifteen separate states, America’s original interest was just in buying the port of New Orleans.
New Orleans offered important access to both the Mississippi River and the Gulf of Mexico, so was vital to American trade and the provision of supplies to the new Western territories that were being settled at the time. When France regained control of the city from Spain in the early 1800s, it raised fears that access would be restricted.
These fears were realized when, on October 18th 1802, Americans were banned from using warehouses in New Orleans. President Jefferson had already ordered diplomats to begin talks in Paris with the aim of buying the city from France. However, on 11th April 1803, the French negotiators offered to sell the entire Louisiana Territory to the Americans for $15 million. Facing an impending war with Britain, and having failed to suppress an uprising in present-day Haiti by slaves and free blacks, France simply couldn’t afford to send troops to occupy and control the Mississippi valley. Deciding to cut their losses, the French government therefore agreed to sell the entire territory at less than 3 cents per acre.

Now at the Missouri History Museum, “The Louisiana Purchase: Making St. Louis – Remaking America”. When the United States purchased the Louisiana Territory from France, the country doubled in size and St. Louis became an American city. Designed for the whole family, the exhibit features the original Louisiana Purchase Treaty, the death mask of Napoleon, and William Clark’s elkskin journal. Visitors will learn about the Louisiana Purchase and its affects on St. Louis.
