Around Tow Hill in Masset, Haida Gwaii, British Columbia, Canada
Tow Hill is a large isolated volcanic plug located 21 km east of Masset on the north end of the Naikoon Peninsula of northeast Graham Island in Haida Gwaii, British Columbia, Canada.
Tow Hill is approximately a 30 minute drive north east of the turn off to Village of Masset. The paved road passes through the Tow Hill Ecological Reserve area of the Naikoon Provincial Park and turns to gravel. Continue driving past the Agate Beach Campground sign to the Tow Hill Parking Lot next to the Hiellen River bridge.
Tow Hill is a unique attraction on Haida Gwaii. The hill rises 400 feet and towers over North Beach. Its face consists of columns of rock formed from eruptions of molten lava approximately 2 million years ago.
The trail follows the Hiellen River for approximately 100 meters at which time signage directs the hiker to either the Tow Hill or Blow Hole Route. The two trails connect with each other mid-way up Tow Hill creating a looped route for hikers wishing to visit both attractions. The 30 minute hike up Tow Hill is of an easy to moderate level of difficulty and is made more accessible by a well maintained boardwalk with stairs. The lava rock beach at the base of Tow Hill and surrounding the Blow Hole is a popular place to explore tidal pools.

Haida Gwaii, is an archipelago approximately 45-60 km off the northern Pacific coast of Canada. Part of the Canadian province of British Columbia, the islands were formerly and are still commonly known as the Queen Charlotte Islands.
Haida Gwaii consists of two main islands: Graham in the north and Moresby Island in the south, along with approximately 150 smaller islands with a total landmass of 10,180 km2. Other major islands include Anthony Island, Burnaby Island, Alder Island and Kunghit Island.

Haida Gwaii Queen Charlotte Islands
We visit the Golden Spruce which was cut down by Grant Hadwin in Haida Gwaii. We also visit Sandspit, Skidegate, Queen Charlotte City, Port Clements, Masset, Old Massett, Toe Hill, Pesuta Shipwreck. We went on a salmon fishing adventure with local legend Matt Ravlic who we can't thank enough for such an amazing day in an amazing part of the world.

This is the view of North Beach on the hike up Tow Hill. Taking in this hike is a must when visiting the Haida Gwaii. The views from up there are spectacular. North Beach is a beautiful sand beach that runs for miles and miles.

Decaying Totem Poles at Skidans are visual reminders of the original natives who inhabited the villages in Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte Islands) off Canada's west coast. The Haida have inhabited the islands for over 10,000 years and were nearly wiped out in the 19th century by European diseases when traders arrived in the area and infected them with smallpox. Memorial poles are testimony to the culture that once thrived in these islands. Travel Log 4: From Queen Charlotte to Masset
This vlog describes our stay on Haida Gwaii from July 26, 2019 to July 28, 2019. We started out from Queen Charlotte (City) and drove up to Masset. We went to Tow Hill and made numerous stops on the way.

The Village of Queen Charlotte, more commonly known by its residents as Queen Charlotte City or Charlotte, is a village municipality on Haida Gwaii (formerly Queen Charlotte Islands) in the province of British Columbia, Canada. It is located on the southern end of Graham Island at Skidegate Inlet and is a member municipality of the Skeena-Queen Charlotte Regional District.
It was incorporated in 2005, having previously been represented as part of Electoral Area F of that regional district, which was coterminous with the Queen Charlotte Islands (which now comprises Electoral Areas D and E).
The town site was established when the first sawmill in the archipelago began operating in 1908. In the wake of World War I, additional work force was needed to supply allied warplanes with lumber. The town infrastructure quickly developed, offering public education, a hospital, general stores and other amenities, even a newspaper.
Mining and especially fishing were other sources of employment in Queen Charlotte when the demand for lumber again increased by the second half of the 20th century. Today, many inhabitants are still working in these resource-based jobs but recently a shift towards more tourism-oriented employment has been observed.[3]
Queen Charlotte was incorporated in 2005 and now offers several motels, shops, restaurants, crafts and car repair shops, banks, an RCMP station and a hospital. It is also the location of the Queen Charlotte Visitor Centre, which is open year-round. With its small harbour, Queen Charlotte is often the starting-point for chartered tours into Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve and Haida Heritage Site on southern Moresby Island.
Queen Charlotte is just 4 km (2.5 mi) to Skidegate with its BC Ferries landing and connections to Prince Rupert.

Exploring Haida Gwaii
Haida Gwaii, also known as the Queen Charlotte Islands, is an archipelago off British Columbia’s west coast, in Canada. Wildlife-rich Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve and Haida Heritage Site includes remote islands and temperate rainforest.
Haida Gwaii is an incredible remote escape. It's home to dense old growth forest, rugged coastline, and pristine natural beauty. We spent 5 days exploring this incredible island and we easily could have spent 20 more. This is a destination perfect for the outdoorsy adventure seeker. Every corner you turn leads to a unique and breath taking hike, view, or natural wonder.

Agate Beach rocks! Queen Charlotte Islands review by Claude-Jean Harel
An excursion to Agate Beach in Naikoon Provincial Park in the Queen Charlotte Islands makes a perfect stop on an afternoon trip from Massett to Tow Hill. There is a fine campground right at the beach with adequate shelter for when inclement weather comes around. Above all, Agate Beach is a wonderful beachcombing destination, for shells.... but mostly agates which are particularly abundant at this beautiful location.

If you ever get the chance to go to the Haida Gwaii Islands, be sure to take in the hike up Tow Hill to see the view. It is a really nice hike through the forest, board walk all the way up. The view from the top is spectacular. We went on a hazy day, and I can only imagine it on a clear day. You can see for miles and miles. Islands from Alaska are visible from the top.
Basalt and waves mystery at Tow Hill, Naikoon Provincial Park - Haida Gwaii
Like mysterious creatures from a distant era, beached at the end of a long journey across the sea, the preserved basalt rocks on display in the Tow Hill area of Naikoon Provincial Park are as beautiful as they are intriguing.
Wave after wave, the surf yields the sounds, lights and the feelings that emerge from finding oneself in a remote part of British Columbia where humans can still experience what it is like to be mere guests in nature's domain.
How sweet it is to take in the sense of place emanating from this magical spot on northern Graham Island; how sweet indeed it is to know that is only one of many others on Haida Gwaii.
