238 HSL Pile Driving in Sacramento, CA
Caltrans awarded a $10.9 million construction contract (including federal funding) to Benicia, California-based Golden State Bridge Inc. for fender replacement of Tower Bridge in Sacramento, California. The project is being completed in two phases, with one pier being completed by October 2019 and a second pier by October 2020. Golden State Bridge Inc. purchased a Link-Belt 150-ton (136.08-mt) 238 HSL lattice crawler to place on a barge to complete pile driving for the bridge’s fender system. Replacing the existing timber fender system with updated materials will ensure the fender system will continue to protect marine vessels, aid in navigation as applicable, and protect bridge piers.

Visit Sacramento: Things To Do In Sacramento!
Learn more about things to do in Sacramento on my blog here:
This is Sactown! Everyone needs to visit Sacramento, the capital of California! Ok, I may be a bit bias, this is my hometown, but let me try to convince you to visit Sacramento through this vlog. I'll reveal all the best things to do in Sacramento from a local perspective including my favorite Sacramento restaurants, nightlife, and attractions.
First things first, we like to call Sacramento Sac or Sactown so don't be surprised if you hear locals referring to the city this way. There's about half a million people in Sacramento, our professional teams are the Sacramento Kings for basketball, the Sacramento River Cats for minor league baseball, and Sacramento Republic for soccer.
The Sacramento International airport (SMF) has over 30 non stop flights that'll get you pretty much anywhere in the United States as well as popular destinations in Mexico. When you arrive to Sactown, I would recommend starting in old Sacramento. Sacramento made a name for itself back in the 1800's as a top destination for mining during the gold rush times. Many sailors would abandon their ships in the San Francisco harbor to make their way to Sacramento for new opportunities. Today, old Sacramento still gives you that old timer feeling with horse carriage rides, historic wooden buildings, and even treasure hunting. Old Sacramento is situated on the Sacramento river waterfront where you'll find an abundance of restaurants, entertainment, and attractions. Eat dinner or stay the night on the Delta King, an authentic 285 foot riverboat, or check out the reconstruction of Sactown's 1876 Central Pacific Railroad Depot.
Drive across our infamous Tower Bridge into downtown Sacramento. Downtown Sacramento is also a short walk from old Sacramento where you can catch a King's game in the greenest arena in the US, the Golden One Center. The arena received the highest level of global recognition for environmentally conscious buildings and organizations. The arena plans to source 90 percent of the food and drink concessions from businesses and farms within 150 miles of the arena.
When you're in downtown Sacramento, check out the downtown lower commons area for local food, events, and attractions. I like to hit the midtown farmer's market on the weekends and these are some of my favorite Sacramento restaurants:
- Low Brau
- Mango's
- Goldenroad
- Punchbowl
- Zocalo
- Beach Hut Deli
- Mikuni
- Bacon & Butter
- Broderick 1893
When you visit Sacramento, some of the best attractions can be enjoyed during the late spring and summer months. Folsom lake is fun for water activities, camping, BBQ, and hiking trails. At Cal Expo you'll find the California State Fair and Raging Waters which have activities for the whole family. Head outside of Sacramento to visit Thunder Valley Casino & Resort, Sunsplash water park, or go way outside Sacramento to visit Lake Tahoe in the North and San Francisco in the south. You can get a feel for what the Bay Area has to offer including all it's amazing food in my Best Food in San Francisco vlog here: or my Best Food in Oakland vlog here:
When you visit Sacramento, you'll find that it's a family friendly city that's growing very fast. Sactown is a proud city, rich with historic beginnings and mixed with a new progressive feel. Downtown Sacramento is the new hub for next level entertainment, fresh local foods, and energy efficient experiences. There's many things to do in Sacramento, and we hope you get a chance to our enjoy our city!

Beautiful Winter morning in Sacramento (from Guy West bridge)
Recorded while on the Guy West Bridge
The Guy West Bridge is a suspension bridge for pedestrian and bicycle traffic spanning the American River in Sacramento, linking the campus of CSU Sacramento with the neighboring Campus Commons development. It was designed to resemble the Golden Gate Bridge, both in form and signature international orange color.
At the time of its opening in 1967, the Guy West Bridge was hailed as the longest pedestrian suspension bridge in the United States.
The bridge was closed between May and July 1987 after three suspender cables (connecting the deck to the overhead suspension cable) failed. All of the suspender cables were X-rayed during the closure, and the three suspender cables, along with three neighboring suspender cables were replaced, with some damage noted to all suspender cables.[4] A draft root cause investigation identified the potential for fatigue and corrosion damage in the overhead suspension cables.[5] The final root cause concluded in 1990 that the suspender cables had failed in fatigue at the top of the socket connector to the bridge deck. Since the fatigue was caused by swaying in the overhead suspension cables relative to the bridge deck, all suspender cables were potentially vulnerable to fatigue failure. The most cost-effective repair that would maintain the aesthetic appearance of the current structure was complete replacement of the suspender cables on a periodic basis (estimated at 20–25 years).[6]
A later study, completed in 2011, found that many components of the bridge were in good condition, with the notable exception of the original lead-based paint. The coating had failed, allowing some surface corrosion in many places.[7] The 2011 study also found several fractured wires in the southern main suspension cable, which were promptly tested to determine the root cause of failure (determined to be fatigue) and to effect immediate repairs.[7] The bridge was closed on weekends in the summer and fall of 2014 to remove the original lead-based paint and give it a fresh coat of international orange.[8] The repainting and other minor repairs were slated to cost in excess of US$3,000,000 (equivalent to $3,100,000 in 2017).The bridge cost approximately US$636,000 (equivalent to $4,670,000 in 2017) to construct.
