The Tower of the Americas is a 750-foot (230-meter) observation tower-restaurant located in the Hemisfair district on the southeastern portion of Downtown San Antonio, Texas, United States. The tower was designed by San Antonio architect O'Neil Ford[1] and was built as the theme structure of the 1968 World's Fair, HemisFair '68. It was named as a result of a Name the Tower contest created by the executive committee. 68 people submitted the name the tower is now known by.
It was the tallest observation tower in the United States from 1968 until 1996, when the Las Vegas Stratosphere Tower was completed.[3] It is the tallest building in San Antonio, and the 27th-tallest building in Texas.
The tower is located in the middle of the former HemisFair '68 site and has an observation deck that is accessible by elevator for a fee. There is also a lounge and revolving restaurant at the top of the tower that provides panoramic views of the city.

San Antonio is the seventh most populous city in the United States and the second most populous city in both Texas and the Southern United States.[5] Founded as a Spanish mission and colonial outpost in 1718, the city became the first chartered civil settlement in Texas in 1731, making it the state's oldest municipality.[6][7] The city's deep history is contrasted with its rapid growth: it was the fastest-growing of the top ten largest cities in the United States from 2000 to 2010, and the second from 1990 to 2000.[8][9] Straddling the regional divide between South and Central Texas, San Antonio anchors the southwestern corner of an urban megaregion colloquially known as the Texas Triangle.
San Antonio serves as the seat of Bexar County; recent annexations have extended the city's boundaries into Medina County and, for a tiny area near the city of Garden Ridge, into Comal County.[10][11] Since San Antonio was founded during the Spanish Colonial Era, it has a church (San Fernando Cathedral) in its center, on the main civic plaza in front, a characteristic of many Spanish-founded cities, towns, and villages in Spain and Latin America. As with many other Western urban centers, areas outside the city limits are sparsely populated.
San Antonio is the center of the San Antonio–New Braunfels metropolitan statistical area. Commonly called Greater San Antonio, the metro area has a population of 2,473,974 based on the 2017 U.S. census estimate, making it the 24th-largest metropolitan area in the United States and third-largest in Texas.[12] Growth along the Interstate 35 and Interstate 10 corridors to the north, west, and east make it likely that the metropolitan area will continue to expand.
San Antonio was named by a 1691 Spanish expedition for Saint Anthony of Padua, whose feast day is June 13. The city contains five 18th-century Spanish frontier missions, including The Alamo and San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, which together were designated UNESCO World Heritage sites in 2015.[13] Other notable attractions include the River Walk, the Tower of the Americas, SeaWorld, the Alamo Bowl, and Marriage Island. Commercial entertainment includes Six Flags Fiesta Texas and Morgan's Wonderland amusement parks. According to the San Antonio Convention and Visitors Bureau, the city is visited by about 32 million tourists a year. It is home to the five-time NBA champion San Antonio Spurs and hosts the annual San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, one of the largest such events in the U.S.

Abandoned Hot Wells Hotel in San Antonio, TX (Mavic Pro 4K)
Exploring the abandoned Hot Wells Hotel in San Antonio, Texas.
Hot Wells was from 1894 to the early 1920s, a spa, hotel, bathhouse, and health resort along the San Antonio River in the south side of San Antonio, Texas.
In 1923, Hot Wells was sold to a Christian Science group for the establishment of a school, which burned two years later. The facility became a tourist camp, trailer park, and a bar and restaurant before it faded away in the early 1970s. In 1984, the Center for Archaeological Research at the University of Texas at San Antonio determined that all which remained of the resort were remnants of the 1902 hotel, bathhouse ruins, and stones of a small nearby building.
Plans are underway to restore Hot Wells to the glamour of its heyday, when international visitors included U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt and Porfirio Díaz, a president of Mexico (Source: Wikipedia).

At its completion this was the largest and tallest hospital in the United States. It was also the only hospital with doctor's offices, hospital beds, and a parking garage all in one building.
A Day and Two Evenings in San Antonio
How does the Scottman spend a day and two evenings in San Antonio? There are so many sights to see in downtown San Antonio, but it can be difficult to fit everything in only a day and a couple of evenings. I also met my cousin Lauren for a few hours during my stay in San Antonio to explore this great city.
One of the sights you must see is the historic Alamo which was the first mission in present-day San Antonio. Known for the infamous 1836 battle during the Texan war of independence, the Alamo has a lot of beautiful architecture and historic sights and artifacts.
The San Antonio River Walk is also a must-do when visiting the city especially at night. It can be quite pleasant to walk along the riverside with the numerous restaurants and hotels lined up along the San Antonio River. Make sure to take a boat cruise which takes you on a pleasant ride along the river with a narrated tour.
San Antonio Market Square is the largest Mexican market in the United States. It is one of my favorite attractions in San Antonio with its abundance of food, shops, and music.
San Fernando Cathedral is the oldest standing church building in the state of Texas. I highly recommend checking out the church in the evening as it is lit up, and it provides a great spot for sunset photography.
No trip to San Antonio is complete without making a stop at the Tower of the Americas for some of the greatest views of downtown San Antonio as well as surrounding areas.

June 26 2019 visit to San Antonio's River Walk. Was in town for a CTPAT conference and walked past this tour multiple times during the visit. Decided to give it a shot and was glad I did. Great tour guide and relaxing visit.

The River Walk winds and loops under bridges as two parallel sidewalks lined with restaurants and shops, connecting the major tourist draws from the Shops at Rivercenter, to the Arneson River Theatre, to Marriage Island, to La Villita, to HemisFair Park, to the Tower Life Building, to the San Antonio Museum of Art, to the Pearl and the city's five Spanish colonial missions, which have been named a World Heritage Site, including the Alamo.
