The two towers known as The Saint Nicolas Tower and the Chain Tower together constitute the majestic gateway to the Old Port of La Rochelle. It was the duty of the slightly leaning and 42 m high Saint Nicolas Tower (named after the patron saint of sailors and built in the 14th century) to protect the entrance to the port and was connected to the Chain Tower by a huge chain which was stretched across at night to effectively close the port. The tower was built on a pentagonal plan with its five corners being reinforced by three engaged circular turrets, a rectangular turret and a higher square tower forming a keep.
It was used as a prison both for the Huguenots during the time of the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes and later on also for the Chouans who remained faithful to the king during the revolutionary wars. An outside staircase which acts as a buttress leads up into the main room which is octagonal in shape and has elegant ribbed vaulting above. Other staircases lead from here to the second chamber and this in turn branches off into several rooms including a chapel and also out onto the lower parapet. The upper parapet provides wonderful views of the entrance to the harbour, the bay and the Ile d’ Aix.
Also built in the 14th century, this tower obviously derives its name from the huge and heavy chain which used to be stretched across the harbour mouth between this tower and the Tour St Nicholas at night. Originally this would have been effectively the Gateway to the Old Port. The Chain tower would have closely monitored all port traffic and boat movements and also collected taxes and dues. The Chain Tower was regarded as sacrosanct in the Protestant period and it was from this tower that the standard with the city’s colours was proudly flown. Originally there was in fact a turret attached to the tower but this was demolished probably in the 17th century to widen the narrow channel entrance. For a long time the tower was used as a powder magazine and this directly led to it being severely damaged in 1652. After this, the tower remained empty for 3 centuries. It was only in the 20th century that the Tower was restored and given a new lease of life.

La Rochelle is a coastal city in southwestern France and capital of the Charente-Maritime department. It's been a center for fishing and trade since the 12th century, a maritime tradition that's reflected in its Vieux Port (old harbor) and huge, modern Les Minimes marina. The old town has half-timbered medieval houses and Renaissance architecture, including passageways covered by 17th-century arches.
Known as La Ville Blanche (the White City), La Rochelle's luminous limestone façades glow in the bright coastal sunlight. One of France's foremost seaports from the 14th to 17th centuries, the city has arcaded walkways, half-timbered houses (protected from the salt air by slate tiles), ghoulish gargoyles and a fabulous collection of lighthouses – all rich reminders of its magnificent seafaring heritage. The early French settlers of Canada, including the founders of Montreal, set sail from here in the 17th century.
This 'white city' is also commendably green, with innovative public transport, open spaces and plenty of activities and attractions for families visiting with children. La Rochelle's late-20th-century district of Les Minimes was built on reclaimed land, and now has one of the largest marinas in the country. Unlike the Med with its motor cruisers, the 3500 moorings here are mostly used by yachts, which fill the harbour with billowing spinnakers.
The Old Port (Vieux Port) is the oldest and most picturesque part of La Rochelle, dominated by its defensive towers. If a party of enormous chess pieces came down to the seaside and got tipsy, they would resemble these 14th / 15th C towers. Tour de la Chaine and Tour St Nicholas lean over the narrow harbour entrance: a stout chain was raised between them to keep out trouble (often English). A rampart stretches west to Tour de la Lanterne, the former lighthouse.
Musée du Nouveau Monde (New World Museum) housed in the old Fleuriau Hotel, depicts La Rochelle's relationship with the Americas, especially Maritime Canada and the French Caribbean. Port des Minimes is one of the biggest pleasure boat marinas in Europe: mostly yachts not motorboats. Also, visit the nearby beach.
Musée Maritime (Maritime Museum), Place Bernard Moitessier and Aquarium de La Rochelle (La Rochelle Aquarium), Quai Louis Prunier (near railway station just south of old port). Île de Ré resort island is accessed along Route D735 via a 2 km long toll-bridge. The toll to get onto the island is €16 per car in summer and €8 in winter, free on foot or with a bike; there's no return toll. The road runs through La Flotte to the main settlement of St Martin de Ré, which has a charming port (UNESCO Heritage Site) fortified by Vauban. Most buses terminate here. The road straggles on for another 20 km to Les Portes-en-Ré.
Situated near the Old Port, you can buy fresh products every morning in the central covered Market. On Wednesday and Saturdays (and during most of the summer), you will see all of the streets surounding the main area covered in stands occupied by local farmers selling their products. You will find dozens of restaurants surrounding this hot spot, and from the market, you can go in direction of the Place de Verdun or the Old Port and will walk by the main shopping streets of La Rochelle. The sector of Les Minimes is where you will find most activities that are not specifically targeted to tourists, such as bowling, movie theaters, etc.

La Rochelle is a beautiful city in western France and the capital of the Charente--Maritime Department.It is a seaport on the Bay of Biscay, part of the Atlantic Ocean.It also has a rich history, well worth going there for a visit. The people are very kind and friendly there. The city is full of very interesting programs.What I also like about La Rochelle, that even when you visit it at winter time, still beautiful,interesting and full of life.There are three towers:The oldest is la Tour de la Chaine (built between 1382-1390), the second one is:Tour de la Lanterne and the third is:Tour St-Nicolas
La Rochelle - Les Carnets de Julie
Julie et Micheline ont fait la route jusqu’à La Rochelle, ville portuaire de la côte Atlantique à l’architecture très bien préservée, racontant son passé prestigieux de l’époque où elle dominait le commerce maritime. On peut admirer ses remparts mais aussi ses arcades, des maisons à colombage, de beaux hôtels particuliers d’armateurs construits avec la fameuse pierre blanche de Charente, qui donne toute cette lumière à la ville. Vous allez voir qu’ici l’air marin souffle dans les cœurs mais aussi dans les assiettes : on va goûter des moules au pineau, du farci charentais et poitevin ainsi qu’un dessert typique, le tourteau fromager !

The Siege of La Rochelle was a result of a war between the French royal forces of Louis XIII of France and the Huguenots of La Rochelle in 1627–28. The siege marked the apex of the tensions between the Catholics and the Protestants in France, and ended with a complete victory for King Louis XIII and the Catholics.

The Saint-Nicolas tower ( xiv th century ) is, with the Tour de la Chaîne and the Tour de la Lanterne , one of the three towers of the seafront of La Rochelle , and one of the two iconic towers of Old Port , of which it constitutes the majestic door of entrance. For five centuries it provided for the defense of the pass and served as a point of attachment to the chain, stretched from the other side, and used to prohibit access to the port. It was classified as a historic monument by decree of 17 February 1879.
The legend lends to the fairy Mélusine , the construction of the tower Saint-Nicolas. The construction of the tower begins, according to the sources, around 1345. A few years after the tower Saint-Nicolas, the tower of the Chain is built on the other bank. It is so named because it has the function of tending the chain fixed in the Saint-Nicolas tower and closing the access to the port. The two towers become emblematic of the Old Port of La Rochelle, of which they constitute the majestic gateway.
In 1649 , the Count of Daugnon (or Doignon), royal governor of Aunis and the islands, ranks on the side of the slingers . The count had formed a small army through taxes on salt and ransomed farmers and merchants. The city is devoid of fortification from the great siege , with the exception of the seafront. The count decides to make turns his safety net.
From 1569 , and more widely during the xvi th century and the xvii th century , the tower serves to occasionally armory of Powder and jail during the religious wars : the Huguenots were imprisoned there between 1682 and 1686 , at the time of the revocation of the Edict of Nantes . During the French Revolution , the tower was used (until 1793 ) to imprison Chouans .
Although Juste Lisch's proposal to use the tower rooms as the Archeology Museum was rejected by the military engineers , the tower is visitable all year round. The three towers of La Rochelle welcomed in 2011 nearly 121,523 visitors.

Spend the afternoon enhancing your tan on La Rochelle’s largest beach, before viewing the lavish yachts in the port. Minimes Beach is a charming stretch of sand in an area of upscale boutiques and restaurants. Scattered along the beach are many bathing stations complete with showers and other amenities to make your afternoon more comfortable. Find a nice patch of sand for you and your family to enjoy a French picnic of baguettes, cheese and wine.
Spot the famous Lighthouse at the End of the World in the ocean. The wooden octagonal structure is an identical replica of a 19th-century version in Patagonia. Admire its quaint design, appearing like a hut rising from the Bay of Biscay. Relax on the sand with the panoramic view of the lighthouse and sparkling blue ocean water.
La Rochelle is one of France’s loveliest coastal towns. Its historic port is beautifully preserved with a quayside that bustles with boats small and large, a seafront that is packed full of lively cafes, bars and restaurants. In the old town wander through its arcades streets, flanked by seventeenth and eighteenth century buildings that are now home to boutique shops selling everything from fashion and homeware to delicious pastries and fresh bread, books and antiques.
The old port area of La Rochelle is dominated by three 14th and 15th century towers that stand tall at the entrance and is one of the town’s major tourist attractions. Just over 400 years ago the first settlers to Quebec left from La Rochelle and Tour de la Chaine now houses a permanent exhibition celebrating this.

The Grosse Horloge de La Rochelle is an ancient city gate dating from the original enclosure called William X , no longer needed with the expansion of the city, it hosts a bell and a clock in 1478 and became the belfry of the town replacing the Mallevault gate. The door of the Grosse-Horloge is classified as a historical monument by decree of the December 13 , 1978.
The Grosse-Horloge was originally a gateway to the fortified city of La Rochelle , open in the original enclosure. The gate was built in the early xii th century during the construction of the first medieval walls. In the xiii th century his name was the door of the Parrot or Perrot because it gave access to the suburb of that name. The door was pierced by two bays. The widest, for trolleys, the smaller, for pedestrians. In 1478 , it was surmounted by an octagonal bell tower, topped by a campanile sheltering the bell of the clock. This upper part was very close to that of the Cailhau Gate (Except the central window).
In 1672 , the two bays are brought together in a single arcade, to facilitate circulation. In 1746 , the upper part of the building was demolished to make room for the current construction in the form of a Louis XV cartel flanked by scientific and military attributes.
Note that the ephemeral tram La Rochelle passed under the door of the big clock to reach the Place de Verdun. Today, it remains one of the main points of passage between the quays and the old town, but also for a few years housed an archaeological museum concerning the Templars of La Rochelle.

Marathon de La Rochelle : une victoire en solitaire pour le Kenyan Emmanuel Oliaulo
Le 29e marathon de La Rochelle a été remporté par le Kenyan Emmanuel Oliaulo, déjà vainqueur en 2016, en 2h 08 minutes et 22 secondes. Il n'a pas battu le record du marathon mais a réalisé le deuxième chrono de l'épreuve.

La Rochelle Cathedral is a Roman Catholic church located in the town of La Rochelle, France. The cathedral has been a national monument since 1906. The Diocese of La Rochelle (Diocese of La Rochelle and Saintes from 1852) was created in 1648 but the first stone of the new cathedral was not laid until 1742, by which time the architect who drew up the plans, Jacques Gabriel, was dead; the work was supervised, from a distance, by his son Ange-Jacques Gabriel. Although still not complete, it was consecrated anyway in 1784. The structure is a rather bare Neo-Classical one. The cupola has paintings by William Bouguereau, a native of the city.
Attached to the chevet of the present cathedral is the late medieval Gothic bell tower of the Church of St. Barthélémy (Saint Bartholomew), first constructed in 1152 by monks from the Ile d'Aix, the rest of which was destroyed by the Huguenots in 1568. The tower, on one of the highest points of La Rochelle, was used as a gun tower against the besieging army of Louis XIII in 1627.
The displaced parishioners were able in 1628 to take over as their church the grand temple, a former Protestant church adjacent to the site of the medieval St. Barthélémy, only to find in 1648, on the creation of the Diocese of La Rochelle, that the new chapter wished to use it as the cathedral. The parishioners therefore built a new church of St. Barthélémy nearby, which was completed in 1678. The older church however burnt down in 1687 and the chapter moved into the new church, which they and the parish were obliged to share until the consecration of the new cathedral in 1784. The church was entirely destroyed during the French Revolution and the site re-developed with houses, which were demolished later in the 19th century when it was possible to finish the cathedral.
