McAllen's Town Lake at Firemen's Park Opens
The City of McAllen has opened its newest and most unique public park.
It's called Town Lake at Firemen's Park. It's built on top of what was the city's
first water plant in 1927 and what was the fire department's training ground
from the 50's to just a few years ago. Today, the expanded park hosts a four
acre lake where you can fish, kayak and canoe. There's even a man made
island with a fishing pier. Plus, the park has two child play scapes, four
horseshoe pits, a campground, a sand volleyball court, a kitchen and a large
pavilion suitable for big parties. Hey, fishing right in the middle of town!

Town Lake Repairs Expected By End of August
A Mercedes based company, Rovan, Texas LLC, has agreed to fix Town Lake at Firemen's Park, at a cost of $212 thousand dollars.
The 4-acre lake had to be completely drained after a leak was discovered, months after it opened back in May of 2012.
The work to rehabilitate the lake is not expected to take very long.
It should be about 30 days, said Roy Rodriguez, the general manager for the McAllen Public Utility Board. So, we're hoping that construction starts at the end of July so by the end of August we will be very close to finishing this up and the lake will be back to what it looked like a year ago.
The contractor will line the bottom and sides of the lake with 3 feet of clay.
We're going to take probably an average of between 2 and 3 feet of soil out of place, bring in new soil that we have at the new reservoir, a different type of clay. It's called a fat clay that we can compact to a certain density to ensure that we have no leakage, said Rodriguez.
Plenty of oversight and soil sampling is planned throughout the duration of the project.
We're going to be testing this soil daily and probably multiple times a day because you can have the right clay and if you don't compact it correctly, then it's useless.
Elected officials and city staff alike are eager to see Town Lake restored to the beautiful attraction it was when it opened in May of 2012. Fishing, kayaking, and canoeing will return soon.
Well, you know we're excited about the project. These things happen from time to time in construction. The bottom line is when we constructed this the staff was trying to find ways to be as efficient as we could looking at the bottom line. Obviously, the bottom line isn't always the main factor and so we're going to get in here, clean this up, fix it and the citizens of McAllen are going to be very happy with what we have.
