The only accurate information I can give you is that we hear 21 students and two teachers have been involved in the damage.
6. Wide of news conference
STORYLINE:
A group of Japanese exchange students and their teachers were trapped in a collapsed building after a powerful earthquake struck the New Zealand city of Christchurch on Tuesday, a government minister said.
Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary, Yukio Edano confirmed that 21 students and two teachers had been involved in the earthquake, but said he had no further accurate information to report.
Japanese media reported that the college-aged students and their teachers had been eating lunch in a cafeteria when the 6.3-magnitude quake struck.
The head of the college said one of the teachers called her family in Japan from inside the building, and that one in the group had suffered a broken leg.
The group was from the Toyama College of Foreign Languages in the Toyama Prefecture, on the western coast of Japan.
An official from Toyama Prefecture said nine students and two of the teachers were accounted for, but another 12 students could still be trapped.
The Japanese Prime Minister, Naoto Kan, is due to meet with ministers later on Tuesday to discuss the safety of Japanese nationals in New Zealand.
According to Edano there are around 3,000 Japanese residents in Christchurch and its surrounding area.
The earthquake struck the city, one of the biggest in New Zealand, on Tuesday at the height of a busy workday, toppling tall buildings and churches, crushing buses and killing at least 65 people in one of the country's worst natural disasters.
It was the second major quake to hit Christchurch, a city of 350,000, in five months, though Tuesday's 6.3-magnitude temblor caused far more destruction than a more powerful September quake that struck before dawn on a weekend.
An unknown number of people were feared trapped in the rubble.
