Sequoia planting with Project 180
The Proclamation establishing the Giant Sequoia National Monument states that a century of fire suppression has led to an unprecedented failure in sequoia reproduction... This along with natural and human caused tree mortality has created a need to increase the numbers of seedling in various groves. WildPlaces and the U.S. Forest Service have partnered to plant these rare trees in the Giant Sequoia National Monument, educate the public and improve the long term health of existing Sequoia groves.

Old Growth Redwood Falls Naturally
As we were walking up Redwood Creek on a calm morning, we heard a loud crack and ran away from a giant falling Redwood tree. This tree fell naturally, and the ground shook. Although a close call, I must admit it was an incredible adrenaline induced experience. The ground shook; I cannot say I have never yelled RUN!!!! anymore. The tree exploded into shards, a common result of fine straight grained Redwood.

70 years of montane forest change in Grand Canyon National Park: Resurveying 1935 plots
The chance rediscovery in Grand Canyon National Park (GRCA) of an early 1900s dataset used to create the park's first vegetation map led to a rare opportunity to examine forest change in the park since 1935. In 2004, ecologist John Vankat led an effort to resample the historical plots, and shares his conclusions about forest development and the surprisingly wide range of ecological conditions characterizing GRCA ponderosa pine, mixed conifer, and spruce-fir forests.

Rim Fire At 223,000 Acres As Calif. Officials Search For Cause Of Massive Blaze
Rim Fire at 223,000 acres as Calif. officials search for cause of massive blaze
California officials searched for answers to what sparked a massive wildfire near Yosemite Park that is still only 40 percent contained after two weeks of firefighters battling the blaze. According to state fire officials, the Rim Fire has scorched almost 223,000 acres of California forests and over 100 structures have been destroyed by the fire.
Highway 190 from Springville to Quaking Aspen
Highway 190 cuts across some of the most picturesque regions of California - from the plains of the San Joaquin Valley in the centre of the state to the Death Valley in the border with Nevada. However, it is particularly known for one that it actually does not traverse. This happens as 190 - or The 190, as Californians say - is one of the few interrupted highways in the state, since the section that would cross the peaks of Sierra Nevada was never built. Plans for that part of the road were first developed in the 1920s, but construction proved very difficult and expensive given the elevation changes, narrow path and remoteness. The project was finally abandoned in the 1970s due to interest in preserving the Golden Trout Wilderness the South Sierra Wilderness in the Sequoia National Forest.
To the west of that never-built section is the one that is probably the most beautiful segment of Highway 190 - so pretty, in fact, that it is part of the State Scenic Highway System. Connecting Springville in the Tule River to Quaking Aspen in the Sequoia National Forest, the road raises spectacularly from an altitude of 312 meters (1,024 feet) to 2,195 meters (7,200 feet) - with thousands of turns lining up a stretch of approximately 40 kilometers (25 miles). This video shows such a segment of Highway 190.

Destination: Idaho City
Nestled in the heart of the Boise National Forest, historic Idaho City, with roots dating back to the 1860s was ground zero for the great Idaho Goldrush. The rustic town is the seat of Boise County and has repeatedly been voted one of the top three day trips of the Treasure Valley.
Idaho City was founded in December 1862 as Bannock, amidst the Boise Basin gold rush during the Civil War, the largest since the California gold rush a dozen years earlier. Near the confluence of Elk and Mores Creeks, its plentiful water supply allowed it to outgrow the other nearby camps in the basin, such as Placerville, Pioneerville, and Centerville. As its population swelled, the new Idaho Territorial legislature changed the town’s name to Idaho City, to avoid confusion with Bannack, in present-day Beaverhead County, the southwestern corner of Montana.
At its peak during the mid-1860s, there were more than 200 businesses in town, including three dozen saloons and two dozen law offices. Its 1864 population of 7,000 made it the largest city in the Northwest, bigger than Portland. Wood was the prime source of both shelter and heat, which caused Idaho City to burn four times: 1865, 1867, 1868, and 1871. Five businesses on Main Street burned again in the early hours of June 5, 2015.
In 1863, St. Joseph’s Catholic Church was established; it was the first Catholic parish in the new Idaho Territory and the church was completed the following year.
Idaho City is an important location in local Masonic history. The Grand Lodge of Idaho was founded in Idaho City in 1867. Idaho Lodge No. 1 was originally located in Idaho City but is now in Boise.
During the boom, the greater Boise Basin population numbered in the tens of thousands, but most left the mountains when the gold ran out. Idaho City’s population fell below 900 by 1870 and was down to 104 by 1920. Today the town economy relies mainly on hunting and fishing tourism, and visits to the many historic sites, including the Boot Hill Cemetery. Outside of town, the mining tailings of the era are everywhere.

WILD Natural Water PARK in Sequoia National Forest. Water Slides, Cliff Jumps, Whirlpools and MORE!
The Alder Creek Slide is a famous natural water slide in the heart of Sequoia National Forest. We also stumbled upon a lesser known, but equally impressive area known as the Dry Meadow Creek Tubs. To top it off, we hit the pristine, lush waterfall Nobe Young Creek Falls and finished the day at Dome Rock, overlooking the Sequoia Valley.
